the flds church is much more strict than jw's, but reading the book made me see that jw's are not the only ones who believe certain things, like that they have the "truth", or the roles of women, or the way men make their own decisions and then claim it's from god.
It sounds kind of depressing. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just that I've done so much reading, research and thinking about my past with the WTS which is depressing enough. If I'm going to go out of my way to read someone's story right now I need it to at least have a happy ending.

Do you really think people would have been favorable to him if their child had been killed because of him? People are used to thinking of "christ died for others." In this scenerio, thousands of innocent babies died for him. A bit of a role reversal, don't you think?

Yknot, they want phone witnessing done in small groups so more people are participating. It's too easy to count three hours worth of time when 20 people take turns making 1 phone call apiece. Good times.

i live near sacramento, ca and earlier this week the local convention authority held a big deal press conference announcing a "deal" with jehovah's witnesses (see clip below).
based on comments to local news media on their websites, more than a few people are not too crazy about the idea..... i heard an interview on a local station where the head guy [of the convention authority] was defending (sounded very defensive) the city's deal with the dubs, by saying "well, they'll bring hotel dollars, food dollars, and they'll be visiting all of our local museums, evening life, and entertainment attractions.....so the monetary impact will be huge for us...".
specifically discouraged from doing any of those "extra" things..... hope those attractions aren't hiring more employees to handle the witness "crowds"........ also, during the interview, he said that the convention authority would be able to select the dates for the various conventions.
I worked at an Olive Garden in a city that held a convention. Unfortunately, I had to attend the convention so I couldn't work that weekend, but all my coworkers assured me that the witnesses were awesome tippers. At least they are when the badges are on.
i've done a jwn search on beards and had some great reads.. i've learned the history of russell vs. rutherford and knorr and the hippies.. here's what i'd like to hear about.. either you or someone you know who grew a beard and the fallout because of it.. for me, i'd love to hear about the squeaky clean elder who decided to grow a beard and got removed because of it.. katie kitten, from england, on another thread told the story of her dad, the squeaky clean elder who grew a beard in the 70's and got away with it.. i don't think that would happen in california 2009.. anyway, what are your beard stories?.

My brother has a beard. He's faded and never going back, but he recently went to two out-of-state JW functions--a camping trip and a family wedding. No one said anything about the beard.
Most of the young, non-JW guys I know have beards. It is very much the fashion right now, and only occasionally in a punk way. They are definitely way behind the boat on this one.
Beards are attractive. Mustashes, not so much. I've always felt that a guy with a mustache is trying to fit in between being obedient and being macho--neither quality is attractive.
the bible speaks about adam naming the animals in the garden of eden.. any thoughts about how long that would have taken ???.
i mean, you have steve and betty the sheep, mike and nancy the dogs, miguel and maria the zebras, irv and amanda the cats, etc, etc, etc.. it doesn't seem like it would take a long period of time.
plus, he was alone at the time so he wasn't getting pestered from his wife and kids about what the names should be.
Adam spent the rest of the time figuring out how to shave his beard with rocks.
