Help - am I on the fence??

I gave a partial answer on your other thread, but I recommend reading Combatting Cult Mind Control by Steve Hassan. The book doesn't mention JWs until the appendix, but see for yourself whether you think JWs fit the cult mold. One of the identifying features of a cult is that the members are told they are special; they are the only group in the world who knows The Truth. JWs think they are the only group but there are so many out there with the same belief.
And frankly, if there's a God in charge who would reward your husband's creepy behavior by giving him custody of your kids, I'd want nothing to do with that God.

Thoughts on NOT dating
by wantstoleave injust throwing some thoughts out there.
wondering if anyone feels the same as i do.
you know, being brought up not being allowed to date until you were 'of marrying age'.

I was told that once you knew you wanted to marry the person, you should just get married right away rather than have a long engagement. I knew my ex-husband for less than five months before we were hitched. They do everything they can to rush you into a bad marriage, then make it next to impossible to get out of it.

Welcom WTL! Many of us have been in similar positions as you so you will find a lot of empathy. I divorced my husband for non-support when I still believed JWs had the truth and the elders were NOT happy with me. It was in this circumstance that I realized that God had nothing to do with this organization. Later I started to research the validity of many of the teachings. This thread has a bunch of my research. You may want to pass it along to your brother.
Pleasure to meet you.

Are the Jehovah's Witnesses, under the direction of the GB Jah's org?
by isaacaustin inplease let active jws comment here first.
i am especially inerested in their response as to whether the governing body is god's channel of truth, leading the members of the congregations, the sum of whom cumulatively make up jehovah's organization.
if so, why, and on what basis..

If there is one thing worth campaigning for within the JW religion...
by Mickey mouse in...i think it's discouraging the practice of baptising minors.
jws love to say "we don't have infant baptism" but given the fact that many witness children are baptised in their early teens or before, they may as well be infants.
since this action opens them to possible alienation from their family (due to judicial action), i think this is the achilles heal for the wbts.. .

The JW practice of baptizing children is far more reprehensive than the way other religions baptize infants. In the latter case the downside is an artificial inflation of the churches membership numbers. Big deal. In the JW's case, children are held accountable in the severest way for a decision they are not capable of making no matter how well they parrot WTS teachings.

Does marriage work
by wouldacouldashoulda inhi posters.

maybe around half of those who stay married are not really that happy.. .

My boyfriend and I were just discussing this yesterday. We think that the problem with marriages (apart from entering them prematurely) is the lack of education people have about them. Our idea of marriage comes from two sources: our parents and popular entertainment. Relating to other people is a skill that must be learned, not a talent that comes naturally. They ought to offer relationship classes at community colleges. This could be more than romantic relationships. Most people could use tips on how to get along with family, friends and coworkers, too. There are a ton of books available on the subject, but it would be good if an interactive learning option was available to more people.

The WTS and it's members inability to face it's past/history, funny?
by jookbeard ina recent little debate with a couple of recent posters on here i was accused of constantly referring to the past / history of the wts, even to the extent of it being of little importance to them because of the advancement that the wts has made up until this present day , and that they made mistakes, so did the apostles, and we humbly admitted these mistake's etc, the thing is i love studying the history of the wts, it's failed prophecies/blatant lies/flip flop in doctrine, the outright crazy claims, the organ transplant ban, the persecution of their own brothers in malawi, there help for their brothers in mexico, yet at virtually the same time condemning those brothers to murder/rape/kidnap/false imprisonment etc, so folks, you will be seeing a lot more examples of wts history, i'll keep it coming, because the final conclusion will be that the wts is not the channel that jerkhobah uses on earth, and it truly is an apostate!.

If the past is irrelevant, so is the Bible. Why bother reading about what the Israelites or early Christians did when what matters is what the JWs are doing now?

A few weeks ago. It's on my reading list. I'm interested in it in more of an academic way than a spiritual way, and since I'm somewhat familiar with it, it's not high on my list.
