When I was a witness back in the 1960s, early 1970s, a DFing announcement was extremely uncommon. So, it was met with a lot of anxiety.
Apparantly, from what I read here - it is much more common now.
when they announced disfellowshipping of certain individuals in your congregation?
were you shocked?
tell me about it.

if any body from usa have visited england i would like to know if you liked your stay.
what was your experience?
did you visit while still a dub did you visit any congregations and make any life long friends?
I took a 2-week tour from American Express back in the early 90s - it was pretty much a round tour including Scotland. We saw all the sights of London, Stonehenge, the Lake Country, Liverpool, up to Glasgow and over to Edinburgh, and back down the East coast. Great trip.
And, have been back there 3 or 4 times on business from my present company.
It is well worth the trip, I enjoyed it greatly.
the recent topics covering over the new overlapping generation doctrine being put out by the wts.
stirred up some research.
by myself on the meaning and use of the word generation.. here's some interesting things i found out .. most interpretations reveal that a generation if no longer than 30 or 40 years in length.. nowhere have i found that the meaning of a generation is an entire length of a human life span.. on the other hand the wts has their own interpretation of the word, they contend that.
But, the issue here is not so much what the original bible writers meant about the "generation" (because they obviously did NOT mean 1914), but rather what the Watchtower meant when they kept saying it.
The watchtower meant people alive and old enough to comprehend what they were teaching in 1914 would not pass away before the end came.
This failed - hence, the watchtower is now dredging up any way they can to keep from admitting the false prophecy.
And, it is getting more and more ridiculous - for example, having to make 3 changes now since 1995 on it.
don't try to lie about it.
you accept some of these people as an authority.
you listen to them.
What about the Reverand Melissa Scott, Terry?
but the understanding is affirmed in the revelation climax book, albeit with less detail.
the events are as follows (& i'm keeping the quotes really short) :.
1st angel - "it all began during the bible students cedar point convention in september 1922. there gods people enthusiastically adopted a resolution entitled "a challenge.
There was always a blank space in my thoughts when we'd study all that. These outdated talks and publications were supposed to be special; my only thought was, what did they say in that convention, talk, or publication? No one knows, and no one can verify it. Hmm. Would be awfully nice to see what was in those old books. Must've been something special. Weird that they're not in print anymore. Then I moved on, never thinking too hard about it. It was that simple.
>> that was pretty much what I did too. I think I pretty much just assumed this was "old light" and never gave it much consideration. Of course, they have never come down off this ridiculous explanation of "prophecy".
Cliffs Notes, anybody please? As always, I cannot view videos here at work...
i'm new here but have been reading/lurking for several months.
it's good to know that i'm not alone in my ex-jw status and that my story and experiences are not unique.
i have no bitterness or anger anymore.... that's long gone since i left some 12 years ago.
Welcome, and congratulations on getting out.
I left in 1979 as an elder over issues surrounding the Ray Franz blowup at Bethel.
after visiting with a couple of jws over the weekend; and for the first time talking about my true feelings about the org with active jws other than immediate fam, one of them mentioned something interesting.
when i talked about how with the constant changes to beliefs that i find it impossible to believe that the gb can be guided by the hs.
so one of the jws said, "other religions change doctrines around too.
The Mormons gave up polygamy, but probably that was a compromise with the U.S. government.
Didn't one branch of the Anglicans start to allow gay priests?
don't try to lie about it.

you listen to them.
You forgot to include that creepy colin-cleansing ad guy with the pencil-line moustache.
Of course, I haven't seen him on late-night TV for a while.
this has been discussed...and discussed...and discussed some more on this board.
but i thought i'd go ahead and put down my thoughts on why the wts changed the meaning of "generation" again in 2010, after changing it in 2008. in short, i think the 2008 "new light" caused many jws to doubt that the end is imminent, so the wts tweaked the meaning of "generation" to re-kindle the zeal in the flock.
a bit more explanation follows below.. for the sake of completeness, here is a list of the society's various meanings of "generation" over the last few decades:.
They don't want outsiders to have printed information on how silly this is. The goofiest stuff will be delivered verbally-
This is very much like the 1975 stuff - very little printed information, but much talk from the assembly platforms.
Telling them not to share recordings of the talks was part of it also.
This they also learned from 1975 - those tape recordings of "stay alive till 75" were pretty embarrassing in 1978 when they were telling the ranks that they had all just made up 1975 all by themselves.
