Thanks dantheman, very interesting read......and you mentioned one key factor - starting with assumptions and then trying to find evidence that supports those assumptions, as in the case of Young Earth Creationists, can often become problematic.

A Flood Geologist Recants
by DanTheMan inthis was a "post of the month" on www.talkorigins.org a few months ago.
i found this very interesting!!.
a noted geologist once delivered a remarkable statement in a public address before what was, at that time, the premier geological society in the world:...but theories of diluvial gravel, like all other ardent generalizations of an advancing science, must ever be regarded but as shifting hypotheses to be modified by every new fact, till at length they become accordant with all the phenomena of nature.. .

How much should you tell?
by Mulan ini am curious how everyone feels about this subject.. if a family member or another person comes to see you, because they know you know something about jw's, how much should you tell them?.
should you tell everything you know or point them to books to read.............the bible, coc, true believer, etc?
this would be so they could read it for themselves.. if you no longer believe in god or the bible, or both, should you tell them this too?.

Mulan, I'd have to echo Scully pretty much on this one.......
It would depend on what I sense their motives to be, first and foremost, that would dictate what I divulge.
If they could be there to gather information that would in turn be used against you by snitching to the local elders, I wouldn't say anything that might incriminate myself.
If they were sincere, and expressing their own doubts, I would let them lead the conversation and allow their own disclosures to dictate how much to disclose.
Well put Scully.

Online romances ruiner?
by Kingpawn inminimus posted a thread lately asking for questions you'd like to see answered:.
prisca asked how many online romances there were here.. i got to thinking about that at work, among other things (see previous thread).
and besides the "slim pickings" mentioned by a poster in another thread, another potential problem came to mind.. we can probably divide ourselves into two groups here: the "ex-jw's' and the "never-jw's.

carbon dating
by DIM init seems that either my computer or my wt-cdrom is not working properly, othewise i wouldn't need to post this.....anyway my pioneer mother called here ranting about how a new discovery was made that will ruin the evolution theory as we know it today and she was saying how they used carbon dating - and in her words - "which we as jw's don't believe in, since the dates are very inaccurate".
i was curious as to whether or not the wts has ever used carbon dating to support any of their theories.....i seem to have it stuck in my head that they have done this several times.
any help would be appreciated.

Always an interesting topic.....good posts by all thus far. It's been quite a while since carbon dating of any sort has been discussed in WT publications. I wonder what they'd have to say about the newer methods. Of course, it's quite obvious that they would publish whatever quotes they can find to try to discredit such methods.

todays Apostate email to my family
by rwagoner inevery once in awhile i need to vent to my jw family...it is hardly ever pretty and serve no purpose other than to make me feel better...*lol* .
i sent this today after re-reading blondies post on the article for todays watchtower study on apostates :-) .
i also still respect your belief in jehovah but not in the "society".

rwagoner, it's actually a pretty succinct and effective breakdown of the study article and the WTS view on such matters, written with 'aposto-flare'. Whether your family will care to read it or consider it is anyone's guess.
