i wanted to share some news from a family friend (he is my wt mole - still an elder, hates the shenanigans, but is still hanging on for all the reasons often discussed on this site) i know the various rumors have been discussed on here, and unfortunately the rumor about the conventions being eliminated weren't true!
(what a burden on the jw community - financial hardship for a good portion of them, guilting people into actually quitting their job to attend, physically exhausting for many, etc...etc......).
anyway, he told me that the district convention is being moved to 11 weekends at the jw-owned circuit assembly hall, and they are no longer planning on renting stadiums/large facilities in our area (northern ohio/southern michigan).
Really? I hope this is at least the new protocol in the U.S. It would save me a heck of a lot of money, hundreds of dollars that could go to paying down our debt (or at least a Kindle Fire HD or somethin'). My wife better get her butt to the meeting tonight to find out! I've got 'Fellowship of the Ring' Extended Edition watching to do! Nah, jokin'. I hope this happens in my area, the assembly is such a short drive for me compared to the nightmare of fighting traffic for 2-5 hours to get to Richmond...

For me:
1 wife
1 trueborn son
1 stepdaughter
6 different jobs
Deceased:
Great-grandmother
Great aunt
Cousin
Grandfather (on mom's side)
Grandmother (on dad's side, murdered by grandfather in early '60s, dad probably saw it happen)
Low points:
Attempted suicide in 1998 over rejection by girl
Dated only 3 women, one of whom I never met in person, the other two were in two separate cults
Becoming a walking ATM to a chronically unemployed woman, then losing my virginity to her at the age of 26
Sleeping with my ex-girlfriend, then marrying her and linking myself to the cult forever
Disfellowshipped in 2010 after wife read my e-mail
Threw away 'Avatar' on Blu-ray after 'Avatar incident' with wife finding a scene offensive
Elder gave us reclining chair, with instructions that I was not allowed to sit in it (Reclining Chair incident)
Wife read my journal, tore pages out of it, threw wedding ring in my face
Separated from wife in 2011; reunited one month later
Wasting hours of my life on Transformers 2-3, 'The Time Machine' with Guy Pearce, 'Lockout' (again with Guy Pearce), most of 'Lost' without ever seeing the finale which will probably be a letdown, and lots of '80s cartoons that, as it turns out, are quite boring.
High Points:
Seeing the birth of my son
Really good sex with my wife, back when we were doin' that
Star Wars
Batman
Star Trek
Battlestar Galactica
Comic books
Nintendo in all its forms
Nintendo Power magazine (R.I.P.)
The Hunger Games
Discovering freedom of mind for the first time
Reading tons of books
Amazon Kindle
Going to movies by myself
Discovering I could Google an actress's name and find pictures of her
Natalie Portman--my gateway drug to Internet porn
Winning a TV in a spelling bee
Getting a VCR
Having 10 movies and watching them 50 times (Here's lookin' at you 'Unbreakable', 'The Mummy Returns', 'Pokemon 2000: The Movie', 'Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition', Star Wars: Episodes I-II, and 'Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker')
Having a heck of a lot more than 10 movies and never being able to watch them all--even better
Joining forces with my archnemesis Christoph and fighting the Watchtower at the Battle of the High Command
...Aw, yeah. TMI, baby. Way TMI...

in case you missed it --this years dc pointed out that jw's need to direct people to (direct quote) "our spiritual mother the organization" !!!.
jehovah being our father and the organization being our spiritual mother!
i guess we all knew that the society was always "mother" huh..

Yeah, I did a thread a couple of years ago on the quotes I mentioned earlier. Perhaps titling the thread after the infamous 'Dinosaurs' TV show baby quote was unwise...but it was the first thing that came to mind...I don't think anyone posted on it but me, though...

What's really bizarre about this is that they had a response to a letter in one of those WTs from the 50s where they explicitly state that it would not be appropriate to address anointed ones as 'mother'. Then three months later, in big letters, THE MOTHER ORGANIZATION is in a WT article. They really, really, REALLY don't read their own stuff.

i remember a long time ago the explanation was that various anointed ones would write to the gb with the same new understanding of a teaching, the gb would investigate it, and if it was acceptable, they'd pass it on to the r&f.
of course, now we have the new light that new light occurs only to the gb, not the anointed at large.
so, if any anointed ones get new ideas, they're just apostates, right?.
They've claimed fairly recently that holy spirit helps them to understand "things not previously understood", and then they print it and pass it on. Beyond that, not much else to say.
In other words, they look at stuff that comes in from people's letters, or one GB member has an idea, they bat it around on Wednesday, probably not reading too many scriptures about it, then they send a note to the Writing Department to make up some stuff about it and couch the new idea somewhere around paragraphs 10-15, when the audience is at the height of sleepy/zombie state. You can pretty much say anything by paragraph 15. "Jesus is God" would go unnoticed.

Maybe since my kids aren't that old, it's different for me, I don't know. Maybe I'm just a sick enough person that it doesn't bother me too much if people in my family shun me. I just feel that reality is more important. I sometimes think of going back, but to do what? If you're not willing to think your way out of a paper bag, why should I trip over steaming piles of cow dung to get your attention/fake affection? Forget you, and forget them, too!
No, once you've been burned by them, that's it. No more negotiating, trying to meet them halfway. I'll take my solitude as a welcome victory over their treachery any day of the week. Except...it does get lonely. Just not lonely enough to go back. Popping in a good R-rated drama is always a good remedy to those kinds of thoughts. May I recommend 'Black Swan' on Blu-ray? It has nothing to do with anything, just a couple of hours of Natalie Portman in high definition is sure to improve your life on some level, is all.
Heck, I'm a doormat (I was just at Target, and it's definitely one word according to them, not two), and I'm not going back. You're not a doormat, man. You can at least fare better than me!

jehoiakim refused to pay tribute to nebuchadnezzar after 3 years (2 kings 24:1) because nebuchadnezzar attacked egypt in the previous december.
this is attested by both bm21946 (rows 5 to 7, reverse side) and josephus (antiquities of the jews, book x, chapter 6).. in what year was this attack on egypt?.
Well, they've got to tell you 625 B.C., since that's what the Insight book says. Even Carchemish's date has to be moved back 20 years as a result of their chronology, along with pretty much all the other relevant history of that time.

in march 2000, residents of virginia, maryland, and washington d.c. watched continuous, often live, news reports about an ongoing manhunt for a police fugitive on the loose.
on march 8, 2000, that career criminal, named joseph palczynski, attempted to carjack a jehovah's witness family on their way to the kingdom hall in joppa, maryland.
palczynski twice shot jennifer mcdonel, 37, who was driving the family auto.
Hey, I remember that story, 'cause it was somewhat close to my area. Never really thought about the fact that they were on the way to the meeting. Oh by the way, the authorities at that time, if I recall correctly, told everybody in that area to STAY OFF THE STREETS because this guy was on the loose. This couple figured that attending the meeting was more important. It's sad that this happened but it maybe could've been avoided if they'd just listened to the news. (Something about heeding the warning is usually put in Awake! magazines too, you know...)
Also, yeah, it's kind of surprising that the other JW would go into several stores and just not alert anyone; I mean, I would've chosen the longest line possible and then asked for a price check once I got to the front...nah, I understand that the guy was probably scared. That can't necessarily be blamed on the lack of advice from Awake!, can it?
But the fact that the woman died because of not getting blood--that really sucks. So it was a double JW-whammy there--she died because she was heading to the meeting (when she should've stayed home) and then died for sure because of refusing blood. Except that there's also the homicidal maniac that comes into play there...without whom she would have lived. So...obviously it's a mixture of variables, and we don't know for sure that she would've survived had she received blood, but we do know she would have if she'd listened to the authorities and stayed home.
It brings back a sad memory there...it was a scary time in the area, and I guess it got worse since 9/11 and the sniper attacks came in the years after that, so...sucks to live in this area...

hey everyone,.
so it's been over a year and this saturday i'm going to the hall.
can you help to prep me for what sort of emotions and feelings might come rushing in?
Well, going back to the Kingdom Hall...it can be like visiting the grave of an old friend you were forced to destroy, as it was for me. The feeling of invisible walls pressing in on you again, hearing their zombie-like tone of voice, seeing them appear to be brother and sister...it could be intense, maybe even frightening.
Bring a Bible with you, but make sure it's a different translation. If you're just there for a talk, just sit there and read it. It'll give your brain something to do in order to filter out the Borg programming. I use it as a way of shutting it out. Writing down your precise thoughts on a notepad is also a good idea.
The most important thing to remember is that it is merely illusion. These people are under a spell, and you are not. When you leave, you may feel a bit of sadness, but you'll heal. Either way, if someone who claims to be family doesn't tell you about their wedding, that says to me not to bother with them. But then, I guess my approach to family must be different than yours. I don't deal with people who don't want to deal with me, for whatever reason. If they want these people to be their family, fine by me. Just don't expect me to be there when those people aren't.
But...remember with all that said that these are still people, whatever they believe. They don't understand. Try to stay as detached as possible. If you let yourself feel, in those moments, it could be very bad. As Chris Cornell once sang in 'You Know My Name', "Try to hide your hand, forget how to feel." I used to listen to that song before going to meetings years ago. I recommend giving it a listen before you go in there.
