New movie about Jehovah's Witnesses and their crazy friends

Watched this movie yesterday (appropriately while my cong had meeting ), thanks for the heads up. Satanus, the torrent is a quality dvd rip, with subtitles embedded in the movie.

The factualness of the movie is staggering. Usually when JWs appear in a movie, it's some distorted view extrapolated of a couple of well known facts. This movie had almost everything right (except that PO-like JW who had a beard, but that can pass). One studying with JWs would do well to watch this movie first, to get an insider look as to what is actually to be a JW.

Were You Proud To Be A Witness?

as a kid, i was.

whenever i recieved "persecution", i knew i was doing something good for jehovah.. "worldly" people about my being a jw.. were you proud or ashamed as a witness?.

Not really, no. I knew people don't like us, think we're weird and it made me feel bad. You know, peer pressure, fear of men and all. In the FS I was always afraid of meeting someone who knew me.

I don't think I ever met someone who genuinely was, or at least that was my general impression. Once a sister told me she was at a business to witness, and saw a sister working there. Casually the visiting sister mentioned to the boss, that the working sister is a JW too. That sister took great offense, that she should have asked her first before telling others.

Religious songs were not allowed to listen to

well the holidays are coming and there all those songs that will be on the radio and tv that we weren't allowed to sing or even listen to.. but there are other songs that weren't holiday songs.. my favorite is hallelujah by k. d. lang.

i cannot get that one out of my head this morning.

i heard a different rendition the other day and kept hearing kd in my head thinking that is where the singer would go.

The funny thing is many christian songs are denomination-neutral - even more, many so called "holiday songs" like Jingle Bells are not religious at all, yet frowned by JW. Amazing Grace for example almost could fit into the JW songbook as to the ideas in the song - except that 5th verse, which with a bit of a doublethink that is so well known to JW could be interpreted as talking about the resurrection in Paradise.

i think at the time i was still so close to the situation that i thought it was a bit extreme and surely it couldn't be anything like it was being made out to be: conspiracy on the part of the organization.. flash forward to recent days.

Not sure what rules are in the US, here all the KHs I've been to had windows. I visited the local Bethel, and their KH had windows too.

Maybe the brothers over there realised the merits of open source and switched to Linux?

I thought this forum would have more JW on it, maybe I will also ask these things an another forum. :)

solafide, the Watchtower society advises strongly against most Internet activities, especially ones involving other persons. If you find a JW somewhere openly debating some points, he/she is already somewhat rebellious, even if he doesn't realize it. As soon as the elders learn of it, he will most probably face a "scriptural readjustment". Most of the time on the Internet you will only get from them a "hit and run" tactic, spewing up Watchtower quotes, then leaving the board altogether.

If you truly want to hear a JW answer, ask them for a "Bible study". They will be more than happy to go to your place and discuss. Just be careful then and remember they can be really sneaky with questions involving the Society. These are the kind of questions they prefer noone asks before baptism. If they are asked, they usually say that you will learn the deeper truths later. However, once you are baptized, you are forbidden to ask questions any more. Anything the Society says, it's the Truth™.

I have heard Hayley Westenra's voice including her singing Amazing Grace first time while playing Endless Ocean on the Wii. It was quite beautiful, especially with all the underwater scenes there.

Il Divo is also great, maybe I'm biased, but I think Amazing Grace is best sung by a woman. It gives such a heavenly tone to it.

I remember one particular time in my teenage years. We were camping, and had some drinks at the local pub (in my case maybe one more than I should have ) then we returned to the camp fire (a big one, we were many camping then, non-JWs). Man, don't ever do that. Drinking too much then warming out rapidly is a no-no. I don't remember absolutely anything after the point we got back to the camp fire. They say I still sat there for a while, after that I got sick, and they carried me away to the tent. I woke up next day afternoon, not remembering any of it, with a ginormous hangover. I do remember having difficulty coherently asking for the last glass of drink at the pub, so I should have seen it coming. But it was an experience I had to live through and learn. Good thing I learned it without making any serious damage to myself or others.
