Having to wear a tie. It should have been my wake-up call, but I refused to open my eyes - on my first ever time I went into FS I went without a tie, it was too hot. So the elder says, I'm sorry, but we can't allow you to go today, we'll do a Bible-study with you instead.

when in field service, was there any stupid rules that had to be followed?
by rockmehardplace ini was reading the topic on sisters having to sit in the backseat even if it was their car.
made me think of a few rules i was subjected to.
one was we were not allowed to have a radio on.

New Here....and a Brief Intro
by Yan Bibiyan inafter lurking around here for about a month, i thought it's appropriate to introduce myself to such fine group of people.. i was never a jw.
been married to a baptized mate for over 15 years.
my wife was never technically all in, more of a fader, rarely went to meetings, the occasional memorial, a convention once or twice.

Welcome from your (assumably) neighbour Former Eastern Block resident here too. Nice to read happy ending stories on this forum, alas there are too few of them.

About the purse thing: I'm convinced if you leave your purse anywhere, the vast majority of the persons will leave it alone, or maybe open it to search for an ID to return it. Of course the "worldlies" being in such big numbers, the thieves are more numerous too.

Elder who conducted second school cannot read
by life is to short ini tied in to the meeting tuesday night and i was blown away that the elder who they had conduct the second school is one who cannot read well at all.
not that i have any room to talk as i cannot spell to save my life, but i know that and i would never put myself in a place to counsel ones about bible reading and such.
in fact i have not applied for jobs and such because i know i have a handicap with my spelling.. i was so blown away that they use this elder like they do.

I once met a dyslexic guy online who was very bright (member of Mensa), yet he had a hard time stringing a coherent sentence. Since then I try not to judgde people on their ability to read/write.
Then again, such a person would probably not be the best candidate to teach others the art of public speech.

Overlapping generations once more - some tie-in I'm not aware of?

she at first had no idea what i'm talking about.
she read the article, yet she noticed no doctrine change (sidenote: way to go gb!

The other day I casually mentioned to my wife how weird the new generation teaching sounds. She at first had no idea what I'm talking about. She read the article, yet she noticed no doctrine change (sidenote: way to go GB! that was one doctrine change that almost noone will notice - perfect way to introduce a laughable teaching). I took out the WT and read her the relevant passage. She took and and examined it. After a few hours she comes back saying it's perfectly fine, there's nothing weird with it.
But: I don't understand it because I'm not keeping up with the new teachings. This generation change is perfectly in line with the current prophecies that were discussed in length at the last assembly (I think the 2 day one), and I can't understand it because I was not there.
I say wha? She won't discuss such "spiritual things" with me, so I turn to you. Was there anything resembling a prophecy explaining the overlapping generations?

Why are jw children so parent depended?
by XPeterX ini have seen many jw teens who can't behave properly in the outside world or won't go out alone unless they give detailed report to their families.in addition, they give the impression that they can't be on their own unless dad or mom is near them.correct me if i'm wrong but that's what i think.....

The adult JW is dependent too... the WTS nurtures dependency, "independent" is a dirty word. The best JW is one who can make no decisions on his own, who needs an exhaustive list of what to do in every minor setting.

Have any of you had experiences with a spouse who puts loyalty to thier parents and the organisation over you?
by captain ini'm going through this at the moment and very disillusioned - especially when i find that people who i thought were my good friends (read: elders) are actually siding with my spouse..
-
teel
Welcome captain. Yes, I am in the same boat (pun not intended, but hey ho). I made a few posts detailing my story, but in nutshell, she's just crazy about the organization (that can be quite literal too).
I once asked her if the WTS asks her to completely break up with me, will she do it? She beat around the bush for a half an hour with "why would they do that? They have no reason..." and so on. I said, fine, I get it, just say the word, if the impossible happens, will you follow them? She just couldn't say the word, that she wouldn't follow the direction. It is absolutely clear to me that she would do just about anything they ask of her, regardless of how it affects our marriage. She even said once if the organization asks her to relocate to some other place, she would not hesitate to move. Which is really scary, considering that step is the first step at the end of the suicidal cults.
Please stick around and tell us your story in detail.

How I obtained my personal files from Bethel
by jwfacts init has taken me a long time, but i have finally put together an article outlining how i used the law to force bethel to send me my personal files.
it is a very long article full of scans, so i have linked to it at http://jwfacts.com/watchtower/experiences/personal-files-privacy-act-1988.php.
in brief, in 2006 i requested that bethel send me my files on the basis that the australian privacy act 1988 entitles people to receive a copy of any information a corporation holds about them.

Thanks, that gave me an idea to do the same. I consulted online the relevant laws in my country and it seems it's even easier here, the law is simple: if you have data on someone, you are bound by law to share them at most once a year per request with the subject of the data. There are a few exceptions, but the WTS doesn't fall in that category, financial turnover is not a criteria (who made that law about financial turnover anyway? what does that have to do with them storing info on me?)
What bothers me though is that I found an online registry of the entities operating with personal data, but I haven't found the WTS in it. It may be that they simply lied their way out of this, denying any sort of data gathering.

Huh Cheeses? I found it funny, it's a light satire of the JW. I don't think the sender was a devoted JW.

So the bible writings from 1000 years ago have to be at least 100 times more outdated
Oh, don't worry about that, there's a "new light" on the Bible too. They call it "New World Translation".
