Sir82 -- thanks for the inspiring notes from Gilead. It makes me want to pioneer again. :) As a JW, I used to wonder about the "deeper things of the truth" the Tower wrote about and discussed during assemblies. I could never put my finger on what the so-called deeper things were because nothing seemed very deep.
Maybe the "deeper things" refers to why anyone believes the Tower has deep and pure thoughts.

what i am curious about is the jw view on people getting therapy for mental/emotional disorders.
Welcome to the JWF, damselfly. Most cult-like religions set themselves up as all knowing, with all the answers. They tell members that going to an outsider for help is a sign of spiritual weakness. They don't like professional therapy because it can shine a light on the control issues of the sect.
Case in point that's in the news today: Tom Cruise is a follower of Scientology. His behavior and statements show how foolish followers of cults can be. A few days ago Cruise said, "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do." Yeah right--I'm sure he gets his information from the control freaks in Scientology, which makes him an expert. The JWs do the same thing from reading the Awake!
i almost used the word "art" in place of "illustrations" in the subject line.
anyway, i always thought that wt illustrators were of a fairly high calibre.
after the hideous 70s-ish gray-orange-green my book of bible stories era (and, yes, i know some of that had to do with printing tech at the time), some of the illustrations were (are) of quite high quality.. .
I knew a person who felt one of the reason we knew we were directed by God was because the artists and musicians were among the greatest in the world.
Oh my god, I guess you can fool all of the people all of the time! I can't write my name and make look good, but know the Tower's "art work" wouldn't qualify as art in most tattoo shops. Our son attended an art-middle and high school, and just graduated from college with a BFA degree, so I've been around various types of art. The so-called art from the Tower is nearly as bad as the velvet pictures of Elvis that's sold from empty lots on weekends.
lately i've just been getting contacted quite a bit by depressed zombie like cultist's.
i thought i would welcome being contacted by dubs after i da'ed but i actually really find it annoying!
they all drop comments like "nothing ever changes.." "i don't really go to the meeting's that much.." "i'm just so bored.." "if i didn't have meetings i could go back to school" "brother shitbag is a jerk.. i'm so sick of him.." "the elders treat me like a child" blah blah blah.
Yeah, the JWs who have been around for awhile like to hear themselves complain just about anything. However, the minute someone suggests the real reason for the problem (i.e., the Watchtower Society) their eyes glass over and they'll run to defend the Tower. I've witnessed this many times. Scully nailed it with the Stockholm Syndrome--I think that's accurate, and it shows how predictable this behavior is.

at one of the last bookstudies i ever attended i heard a comment that really struck home to me how desperate these people really are getting, to the edge of insanity.
an older woman commented, "you can tell the end is coming.. its in the air.. you can feel it.. there is something in the air.. times are just.. different" and the whole time she was manically glancing around the room.
the conductor agreed with her.
I recently brought that up in a conversation. she denied ever saying such thing.
Soledad's experience is typical of JWs who witnessed failed WT dates. They suppress the obvious in order to sustain the myth. The myth is too important, and they have too much invested to allow failure after failure to expose the myth as being false. It's "the Truth" as long as they keep saying it, and they can't allow the past or the present to clash with the "things hoped for."

Thanks for the information, Outaservice. I attended a BRCI Conference in Chicago, summer 1987. Met many neat folks, and started a research project the following winter from the contacts made in Chicago. I wore a tee-shirt to the opening meeting that said, "I Survived "75!" Everyone loved it.
