by AlanF ini just spoke on the phone to amazing (jim whitney) who is in intensive care in a chicago hospital.
on monday he had a major heart attack, had a stint put in an artery to unblock things and may have bypass surgery.
he's comfortable enough right now, but of course will have to make some big lifestyle changes.

Letter Fedexed To All Congregations
by Dutchie inmy brother sent me this email:.
at the kingdom hall last night the po read a letter that the society had fedexed to all congregations debriefing the friends on the dateline program.
basically they said that jehovah's witnesses do not harbor, endorse or support pedophiles and every since 1997 they have instructed the elders to bring to the attention of the local authorities any person who was guilty of child molestation.

Thanks for the post, Dutchie. The Tower has been exposed on national TV, and now the spin-doctors are trying to cover their butts. Sending the Fedexed letter to all congregations shows the Tower is very concerned about being exposed on prime-time TV. Of course some Dubs will believe white is black if Mommy-Tower says it, but JWs saw and heard the Tower's dirty laundry, which could help many see behind the wizard's curtain.

I'm reading a riveting memoir of a woman's immersion into Fundamentalist faith, and her decision twenty years later to leave it behind. It's called, This Dark World, a Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost, by Carolyn S. Briggs (published by Bloomsbury, NY, 2002). I thought some might enjoy reading the following on pages 190, and 191:
We asked God to make our babies and toddlers righteous soldiers of the cross, stroking their little shoulders and faces as we prayed aloud. We asked God to protect them from Satan. Sometimes we would go through room by room of our homes, casting out any evil spirits in the name of Jesus. We stood in our children's bedrooms, letting our hands fall upon toys and dolls as we prayed, especially any toys that could attract demons. Somebody always knew somebody who had seen a Cabbage Patch doll dance across a sleeping child's bed. The Smurfs made the women in the church nervous after a report in a national Christian newsletter had dug up dirt on them. Their blue color was an indication that the Smurfs were the dead walking, soulless little zombies, hardly appropriate entertainment for our Christian children. . . . And later that night, I threw away a Smurf coloring book I found in Joshua's closet, just in case.
And the Witnesses thought they were the only ones...

you tell a teenager not to go to the internet, and that is the first thing they will do.

I'm certain the Internet has helped thousands exit the Tower, and countless others who searched the Web before joining. Young people today have grown up in the Internet culture. They talk with their friends during and after school on-line, and the Society can't control it. JW parents trying to keep kids off-line only cause them to sneak off to a friend's house to use the computer. The Society's lame efforts to control information to youth and adults show how desperate they've become. The Internet is their worst nightmare--they can't control it!

Just An Ordinary Dad, Please.
by Englishman inim working with number 1 son at the moment, hes saving up cash for his forthcoming trip to oz in may.. my other 2 sons work with me from time to time whenever they need to earn extra money.
that way they can all run cars and enjoy good holidays.
i enjoy it too, i always seem to develop a special rapport with whichever one is working with me.. they always ask me about my younger days when we are at work, and we have a good laugh when i tell them about some of the antics that i used to get up to.

You raise some interesting points and questions. It's a common argument that being a JW protects youths from drugs and other ills. Other fundamentalist groups make the same claim, but I'm not sure the argument is sound. The Society does not record the number of JW children, the number with drug or alcohol problems, and how that compares to the greater society. Many groups have outreach programs to assist troubled youth. The Society's outreach program is to shun, thereby treating people like garbage. I don't know any professional that advocates shunning as a way of helping or protecting troubled youth.
There are many things that can influence youth behavior. Peer groups, family; it's the old nurture/nature debate. However, I've never seen any evidence that supports the claim that being a JW protects children from drugs and other ills. The Society tracks hours spent recruiting converts, but claims about youth protection are bogus. Some can even argue that high-control religions cause more youths to rebel than the number who conform to the group's mold.
