Presbyterians have always been on the liberal, logical, non-judgmental end of the spectrum. Bless them for it.

Presbyterians Approve Ordination of Gay People
by Maze inhttp://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/11/us/11presbyterian.html.
presbyterians approve ordination of gay people.
after 33 years of debate, the presbyterian church (u.s.a.) has voted to change its constitution and allow openly gay people in same-sex relationships to be ordained as ministers, elders and deacons.

Political Preferences
by Band on the Run ini've noted extreme left-wingers and extreme right-wingers here and, of course, everyone in between.
the right wing seems louder but that could be just my own bias.
some active witness in a republican club was trying to do research a couple of months ago about witnesses and party affiliatoin or ideology.

I had the same experience working in politics, BandOnTheRun. I don't miss that life.

"lots of time to shop" probably includes a grand total of 1.5 hours of buying anything and everything in sight at warp speed - then back on the bus before that dirty NY air of Satan's can corrupt!
If I remember correctly, they take you to Pier 17 at South Street Seaport, which is about as exciting as a trip to your local strip mall.
Do not be fooled -- there is nothing touristy about the trips these companies offer. Even if you go to a Broadway show or visit the Empire State Building, it's under their watch. They pick the show (it's always a Disney matinee), they lead your tour, they point out only WT properties from the observation deck...it's brutal. You even stay in JW-owned hotels, eat dinner at JW-owned restaurants (usually in the middle of nowhere)...just absolutely brutal.

Did therapy help you?
by gutted ini am considering going to a therapist.
even though i believe i have gotten better and made some progress (it has been roughly a year since i stopped attending meetings, doing anything jw-wise), i still have a lot of negative self-talk which is hard to overcome, especially during off days like today.. i find the hardest things for me is low self-esteem and social interactions/anxiety.
i'm sure some of you can sympathsize, and though i am not fully blaming my issues soley to my jw upbring (born-in) i know it compounded those issues.. .

Psychotherapy (stereotypical "talk" therapy) didn't help me at all. Cognitive-behavioral therapy saved my life.

Having gone on way too many of those stupid things (a consequence of being raised in a neighboring state), I can assure you that there is no real fraternizing with the Bethelites on these trips. The only time I ever remember having any type of association with them was at a visit to either Wallkill or Patterson where we got to join at their tables for lunch, and they seated us all with Bethelites who had to be about 900 years old. I think the younger Bethelites are too jaded to care about socializing.

Most Overblown Examples Used at Assemblies
by What Now? inat a recent assembly, there was a talk highlighting the dangers of higher education.
the brother used an example of a young girl who went to university, began going to bars, and ended up getting drugged and gang raped - as if this happens to every young jw who chooses to get higher education.. .
what ridiculous examples have you heard used at meetings or assemblies?.

Wow. Gang rape. Classy.
I remember hearing about a JW girl who bought a "Girl Talk" game at a tag sale. In addition to it being a game that encouraged young girls to be oversexed gossips (perfect training for being an elderette, I guess?), it was bought from a worldly family that was known for watching "horror movies about poltergeists." (I guess the elder didn't want to say "They watched the movie 'Poltergeist,'" lest someone go look it up?) One of the demons from the movie escaped the television set, got into the game, and then it entered the JW girl's house. Her father had a car accident a week later and almost died, leaving him out of work for months and sinking the family into poverty. Fortunately, the JW girl realized immediately that her game had caused this to happen, so she threw it out, prayed on the matter, confessed to the elders, and was thereby saved from a life of demon-transmitted syphilis.
Even then, I thought that was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard.

OnTheWayOut, security prompts usually ask for your grandmother's maiden name. If you're using your grandmother's first name, you're doing it wrong. ;) People here are likely just fine posting first names only. But yes, you're right to exercise caution, and no, I won't be posting mine.

The Zeitgeist Movement
by losthobbit injust wondering if anyone here is a supporter of the zeitgeist movement?
it's not a religion, and it's not zeitgeist: the movie.
it's a group of people who want to eliminate the world's biggest problems by removing their root cause.

For some odd reason, I'm a bit leery when it comes to joining new movements... ;)

In addition to LWT's excellent advice and comments (as always), I just wanted to point out that this type of fear-confronting is exactly what cognitive-behavioral therapy does. It's consistently proven to be the most effective form of therapy for people dealing with anxiety, including post-traumatic stress disorder and other problems common to ex-NRM members, so if you're considering seeking formal help, it's definitely what you want to look for from a practitioner. I'd be happy to communicate with anyone about my experiences with it and how it helps you accomplish exactly what LWT describes.

I was born and raised a UConn fan, even going to the old Yankee Conference games at what was basically a high school stadium, so we really don't have any serious rivalries due to the fact that we're historically terrible. ;)
