(for example a well known scientist said .....) Is that because it is out of context or what? I suspect it is, but is there any proof out there? Or, has anyone here ever asked the society about this?

Did you share this new light with the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. I can just see all of them running to a blank lot to go to the bathroom. People would walk by and look like this.

i find it weird that the jehovah witnesses disrespect other relegions by calling their's the "truth".
by saying this aren't the wt's saying that there is no other answer and all other relegions are wrong.
i also think it is disrespectfull the way they call house holders "prospects".
Jehovah's Witnesses have a book -Reasoning From The Scriptures- that they use. JWs are taught to avoid an argument by not answering questions directly. They use this book that has prepared statements and questions to avoid arguments. At the door, they are not supposed to defend their beliefs, but rather sell you on their beliefs. I agree, it is insulting that they refer to their religion as the truth.

i have a vivid memory of 1975 even though i was only 6 years old.
i remember the whispers and the fervor surrounding the year.
i even had an uncle who marked his calendar every day with big red xs proclaiming that he couldn't wait for "this evil system of things to end.".

i went to my first jw meeting, there were actually two but i only stayed for the first one.
it was actually kind of fun.
there was role play and that was funny, everyone was laughing and people were soooooo nice in fact most new who i was already.
I would never tell anybody what to do. My thoughts are as follows. I felt guilty about stopping my study too. I had thought about quitting many times, but I didn't. I got baptised, and was regular to the meetings. I had a few friends, not many. Then my beard started being a problem. Next other little nagging things were. I just couldn't confrom to their standards. Now I will never go again. Also, now that I don't go anymore, they are no longer my friends. Bottom line, as long as you go to the meetings, you will have friends. If you stop going, they stop being friends to you. It is a lonely world inside the Kingdom Hall. Now the Elders said don't go because you want friends, go because you love Jehovah. I agree with that, but if there was a new system like they talk of, who would be my friends. Friendship is not conditional.
My advice is don't commit to them unless you really want to be there through thick and thin. It is better to leave as a bible study than to leave as a baptised person.

all down through history people have wanted to feel that they live in special times - are jws just an extension of this?

for me it happened a few days before christmas of last yr. it was right after my roommate purchased his computer.
i looked up jehovah on ms encarta, clicked on a link and as they say the rest is history.. i had just lost my job so i was able to spend a lot of time researching and looking into all kinds of shit.
The Elder's Wife said something about my opinion does not count, because I didn't follow what the society says about beards. That was the last straw for me. After 6 months of defending my right to wear a beard my patience ran out. I just lost my control that evening and swore off Jehovah's Witnesses from that day forward. Again, the Elders went back on their word that I would have no problem from the congregation about my beard. They promised me that if there were any complaints about my beard, they would handle it. For two years I never heard a thing, and then in September 1999, my life as a Jehovah's Witness was forever changed. If there is anything else you want to know, don't hesitate to ask.
