  AlanF, I am truly amazed at what was said by the Watchtower around the time I was born. I now believe if they thought they could get away with it, they would make women wear head covering all the time, and not just when praying in front of a male. And then after that became the rule, they could make all of the JWs turn off electricity to their houses. And then...

  Ah yes, I remember that article. That was one year before I made my exodus from the cult. The reason for the article is in many African cultures among other places do request a dowery for the woman. However, I still wonder why it made it into a watchtower or awake publication. The reason I wonder that is because why would a christian JW sell his children? Even for the purpose of marriage, I would think the society would tell JWs in Africa to drop the dowery process. I think the old men were short on their medicine when this was approved for publishing.

  how do you feel?

  does the society owe us for misleading us or do we just blame ourselves?.

  imagine we were sold a pension plan that guaranteed us a certain return.

  It is true many were born into the Jehovah's Witnesses, thereby having little choice but to join. That is true of me too. However, that person (including myself) still chose to join the cult. Allow me to explain.

  Let's say you were raised in the cult and got baptized around the ages of 13-15 like most of us are. (I was baptized at 19, but that is another issue.) Each day from that point on, you choose to belong to the cult. Every day you wake up and choose to be a Jehovah's Witness. Because if you don't make this choice, you no longer are in the cult. Now this is not a process that you think about in your conscience. However the facts are you are still a Jehovah's Witness until you say, "enough, no more of this garbage." You can at any point get out, and you know you can, because, they can't make you stay.

  They can make it hard on you by causing you to loose close "friends" and family, but the choice is still yours. So in my opinion, if you are looking for somebody to blame, blame yourself.

  I think your question at the end should read, "Is this the way it has to be for us?"

  In one word, Yes.

  Like it or not, we agreed to be a part of their group. That is a core fact. At any time we could walk away, that is a fact. Unfortunitly for most emotional strings are attached. That is what makes it so hard to leave, but the choice is ours to make.

  You make a great point. I remember talking to a "friend" about a year before I left about this very topic. We had both figured that the reason the Watchtower and Awake! magazines were not going as deep into theology as they had in previous decades was not to stumble any "new sheep". So that is why they must have dumbed down the magazines. However we also figured that the books that we studied at the "book study" had not changed, except for the light getting brighter.

  However, when I prepared for bible readings, almost all of my sources were publications around twenty years old. When I look back now, I can easily see the reason for why my sources were that old. The society is finding it harder to write things it can't defend. Jehovah's Witnesses will at some point have to go "mainstream", or they will collapse.

  A humble and receptive attitude toward counsel will
  help you to be diligent in applying it.

  You could remind them that they must listen to councel too. Then proceed with your own style of counceling, which could include kicking their A$$. Then if the cops show up, you could just say you were counceling them on what happens if they don't stay out of your home.
