I know it's not Christmas yet but I got my Christmas bonus from work and took him to the mall. I had him pick whatever he wanted and told him it would be his Christmas present and he still let me buy it. As we were leaving the store I looked at him and said,"Merry Christmas!" He looked at me and shook his head and said, "You're bad." I told him that the pinata principle applies and he just doesn't wanted to admit it. He just kept shaking his head and said no. So this morning we're at IHOP and the waiter comes over and asked if we're getting ready for Christmas. He freezes and looks at me like he doesn't know what to say. So I looked at the waiter and said yes and get this. My husband plays along and said yes too. After the waiter left he didn't say anything but gives me a look like he doesn't know what to do with me. I just thought it was funny and wanted to share. Mouthy posted a link on another thread that shows how to reason with JWs about Christmas and I'm thinking of bringing up some of those questions with my husband.

Thanks for the link. It makes some good points. I'm trying to figure out how to reason with my husband about Christmas.

I need help finding a 2009 article.
by doublelife ini went to lunch today with my mom and husband.
we started talking about religion.
i'm not going to go into everything we talk about but i told my mom that i found other religions that taught some of the same things the witnesses did and that they also preach like the witnesses.

Blondie,
My mom had me read an article from 11/08 to prove her point. So any article that came out before that, she would say that it was old light. That's why I wanted an article that came out after 11/08.

My husband came home from work and told me that he told his mom about me not believing in this religion anymore. She's concerned and thinks I should tell my family. I told him no. I don't want to hurt my family like that. He respects my decision. So I used this as an opportunity to ask him something. I've already told him about the other religions that teach some of the same core doctrines as the witnesses. And he's already told me that he thinks there are other religions that have God's spirit. So I asked him what prevents him from going to another church that teaches those same doctrines. He said one word, "fear." I was surprised he admitted that and I asked him fear of what? He said fear that maybe God doesn't approve of those other religions. He knows I've been reading Steven Hassan's book and I told him that fear is a cult tactic. His response was that fear is also a human emotion so that's not a big deal. Then, he said that even though the society might be wrong about some things, Jehovah will correct them in due time. So I got him to admit his fear of leaving and then I lost him. Maybe I shouldn't have brought up the cult issue. I'm just so eager to show him what I'm learning that maybe I'm not going about it in the right way.

Holiday time were you sent to the library or not?
by restrangled inthere are many generations of xjws here.
i'm curious as to what happened to you in school.. were you sent to the library during festivities, allowed to stay home, or allowed to participate?
enter the years if you can and the number of jw's with you.. mine: mid 1960's to mid 70's.

Late 80s/early 90s. There was a 2nd grade jw teacher in my elementary school and that's where my mom arranged for me to go. I'd rather have had the library. Do you know how embarrassing it is to be a 4th, 5th, or 6th grader sitting in a room full of 2nd graders?

I just read chapter 4 of Combatting Cult Mind Control and...
by doublelife inwow.
it's strange because even though i decided in sept that this is a false religion, it's still a little overwhelming to read this chapter.
if cult members have two identities, then where is my other identity?

Good point, Black Sheep. I like those questions. It shows that that sentence you put in bold contradicts the opening paragraph to that article. They can't have it both ways.

I went to lunch today with my mom and husband. We started talking about religion. I'm not going to go into everything we talk about but I told my mom that I found other religions that taught some of the same things the witnesses did and that they also preach like the witnesses. She seemed surprised but said that because the witnesses have had the growth they had, that that was fulfilling bible prophecy and proof that they have God's spirit. I told her that these same religions had their start around the same time the witnesses did and they have also experienced similar growth. Then my mom says that might be true but they also have a lot of people who leave their religion. I told her that a lot of witnesses also leave this religion. I think that freaked her out a little because she just gave me a blank stare. None of this is new to my husband so he notices her reaction and continues the discussion. He admitted to my mom that the truth is in the bible and not with one religion and he thinks that God's spirit is with not only the witnesses but also with a few others. But he still thinks that the witnesses are more advanced in knowledge than any of the others that also have God's spirit. I told my mom that I didn't think it was right for the society to say that in order to survive armageddon you have to be associated with this organization. So a few minutes ago she called me and told me to read an article in the 11/1/08 w. It says that even though witnesses feel they have the only true religion, that it is not their job to judge who will be saved, only God can. I need to find another article, hopefully one that is newer that 11/1/08 w, that says you do have to be associated with this religion to survive armageddon. Since the 09 articles are not on the library cd and I threw away most of this year's magazines, can anyone help me out?

Something I never thought of when I was in
by doublelife inwitnesses use the term 'publisher' instead of 'preacher' to describe their position in the congregation.
that should be a dead give away that they are salespeople working for a book publishing company verses preachers who are working for god.
i can't believe i never saw something this obvious.
