1975 Reaction
by MadApostate inthis past weekend, one of the few remaining jw relatives who will still discuss jw stuff with me told me about his recently attending a home bible study being conducted by an elder.
evidently, the study had been told or had picked up some info about the 1975 fiasco.
the elder totally denied that the society had stated or even led people to believe that armageddon would occur in 1975, and he naturally blamed some individual jws for misinterpreting the society's materials.

I was baptized in 1973. There was a continual buzz around the hall about the nearness of the end.
Here is one personal example I remember vividly. At the big international (five days if I remember right) convention held in the summer of 1975 there was a drama about the destruction of Jericho. Special emphasis was placed on the fact that the Israelites marched around the city silently for six days. Immediately following that was a talk announcing the release of a new pamphlet. It was one of those things where everyone there knew the talk was connected to the drama. So they announced that in September we would be taking these pamphlets around and blanketing as many houses as possible, and we’d do this on every three months. No call back records or anything else would be kept.
So that night a bunch of us are sitting around talking and “sister k” says she figured out that if we did this every three months the seventh time would be in the fall of 1975. We spent the rest of the night talking about how the fact that we weren’t going to be talking was just like the Israelites being silent, and Jericho was just like the old system etc. Funny thing was fifteen years later, as we were in the process of leaving I mentioned this to “sister k.” She says “oh, nobody ever said anything like that.
In the summer of 1974 the society released the “Eternal Purpose” book. It had a longer title that escaped me at the moment. One chapter was devoted to how starting 3,000 years after Adam’s creation the light should begin to get brighter as we were half way through God’s rest day. There followed a bunch of nonsense showing how this was working. Again the clear implication pointed to 1975.
As to stockpiling, I remember some people talking about it, but the general opinion was that we would have to totally rely on Jehovah.
Some people around my current church get all caught up in talking about signs of the end etc etc. My response is "it's not relevant to anything. What would you do differently if you thought the end was 10,000 years from now." It usually brings them up short.

Vietnam War Pioneers
by MadApostate induring the same weekend conversation which stimulated my recollection of "1975 stockpiling", i also recalled the "vietnam war pioneer" phenomenon -at least that's what i call it.
i thought i would post something about it to see if others remember this.. during the 1960s, when the draft started to supply troops for the vietnam "conflict", a phenomenon developed in our area, at least, and i'm wondering if this occurred nationwide?
(i can't remember if this was officially handled in the mags and from the stage, or if it was just another one of those things that was affected quietly behind the scenes.).

When I was baptized (November 24, 1973) I was told to remember the date because that was the date that I was ordained as a minister. I think it was a few years later they stopped saying that.
As to draft-dodging:
1 Corinthians 14:8
"Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?"Throughout the war America's trumpet sounded an indistinct call. The system was rigged to keep the children of the priviledged from getting drafted. Like almost all of my classmates I went off to college with one main goal, keeping my II-S deferment for as long as possible. By the time I graduated the war was winding down and they didn't want me.

British And American Intercourse.
by Englishman inok, america, this is it.
you have got to start learning english english at some point or another, after all, us brits are having to learn american english to be able to understand all those films (movies) about how you saved our arses (butts) during the 1939 -1945 (1941 - 1945) war.. now we all know the obvious ones, such as you calling a car bonnet the hood, the boot is the trunk and a spanner being a wrench etc etc.
plus the fact that you eat fries instead of chips and spread mayo instead of butter.

Non-JW Preacher Resources
by indireneed inanother question.. does anyone know of a group that might be interested in stopping by my wife and jw parent's house on a casual 'preaching mission'?
it is essential that they be prepared to argue their biblical faith and have some idea of how to get past her conception.. the biggest problem is that she thinks that all other religions don't read the bible, don't believe the bible and don't preach the bible.
i would love to have someone at least show her that that is not true.

Any Christian church should be happy to help. Where are you and I will see what resources I can find for you. I go to a large church and there is a good chance I can put you in touch with some one, wherever you are.

To All Here..... just a question....

I became a Christian before I became a dub.
I left the Watchtower because I decided that it did not represent true Christianity.
I'm now what I always was: a Christian.

I need help! I'm losing my wife!
by indireneed inmy wife is becoming a witness and i've found very little that i can do to stop her!
i've tried to show her that the wt does not quote correctly, i've talked to her about past beliefs and i've tried to reason with her about the bible.
but she won't listen!.

I would like very much to help you. I became a witness in 1973, the year I graduated from college. My wife and I left on our own initiative in 1989. We wrote a long letter to the Society outling why we could no longer be witnesses. If you'd like a copy e-mail me at [email protected]
I will be happy to send you a copy.

Most hated Rules and Regulations
by Bendrr inthe thread about "clinking" got me to thinking.. what were the rules you hated most?
rules that were just so boneheaded as to be infuriating.. there are so many rules and regulations to follow as a dub.
some rules may not even be able to be referenced in the publications, at least not firmly and clearly.

I did an interesting little exercize at our church one time. I was speaking to the high school group about what it was like to be a dub. So I start running off the list of no-no's.
If you're wearing blue jeans stand up.
If you're female and wearing pants of any sort stand up.
If your skirt is above the knee stand up.
etc etc. I think I reeled off about a dozen of them. By the time I'm done about 90% of them are standing. (We go to a large church and there were about 300 in this group.) Then I say that if we were at the KH everybody standing would be talking to an elder after the meeting. Blew their minds, including the pastor who normally ran the service. He couldn't believe it would be expected to counsel kids for wearing blue jeans. -
