  definition: a thought-terminating cliche is a commonly used phrase, sometimes passing as folk wisdom, used to quell cognitive dissonance.. here's mine: we don't believe that way ..... we are christians in this home..

  Anything involving the words "evidently" or "true Christians."

  Anytime a conservative says something negative regarding liberals. I'm not what you would call a liberal either, but when I hear someone state, "the liberals this", or "the liberals that", my ears just shut off because it's pretty much guaranteed that whatever point they plan on making isn't from the heart. Rather they're going to repeat whatever they heard from whatever pundit tickles their ear.

  Reverse the words conservative and liberal and this statement is equally valid.

  What EP said +1. I was raised on science. This might be considered a good example of our peer review works. My son and grandaughter are taking tracking classes from a certified tracker. He can give verifiable information about how to tell the difference between tracks left by a bobcat and those left by a house cat. I would expect the same from some one who claims to be able to differentiate between bear and sasquatch tracks. i.e. some thing like "bear tracks are never more than 13 inches long and 5 inches wide, this track is 15 inches long and 9 inches wide."

  Incidently if you're trying to collect scientific evidence you need to put a ruler or a dollar bill or somethng in a picutre like that so we know what we're looking at. Without a frame of reference that could be a mouse track half an inch away or an elephant track 10 feet away.

  If you can't put it in numbers, its not science.

  Do any here have adult children living with them?

  my 34 year old daughter may be moving in with me for awile when i move to arizona.

  we get along great but we haven't lived together in 14 years.

  in these tough money times we feel two could live cheaper than one......i'm looking forward to the move.. three years ago i had my 28 year old son move back in with me for six months.

  Our three have all come and gone again a couple of times apiece. For reasons I won't go into here our oldest son's 8 year old daughter lives with us. He spends two or three days a week here. It seems to work, although my wife and I were somewhat younger when we last chased one that age. Our 36 yeare old daughter and her significant other have spent the last two summers with us, both are in grad school. Not sure if they're coming back this summer or not, we'll see.

  Last year at the start of the granddaughter's school I went to an open house. We met in small groups and to get things started they went around the room with a question "what do you want for your child by the time he/she leaves your care?" My answer was that I'm hoping my children leave my care by the time they are, say, forty.

  We have only been empty nesters for a couple of months

  It's not an empty nest until they take their crap out of the garage/attic/basement.

  In order to confirm that there DNA sample came from a sasquatch the researches would have to be working with material from a known source. If they had a sasquatch where they could hold it down and get a sample why didn't they just take a picture of it?

  with the book crisis of conscience detailing the turbulence at bethel during the early to mid 70's, the transformation from autocratic rule to governance by committee or a body of men, many of us can speak to how that felt among the rank and file of the local congregations during those years.

  we learned new concepts based in large part to research done for the aid to bible understanding volume, then we were asked or coerced into unlearning those principles, going back to the old ways.

  some of us never readjusted, finding ourselves very different from our more hardline compadres.. the inertia for the changes that eventually were initiated in the congregations came from the discovery that the greek words episkopos and presbyteros were used biblically to refer to all qualified men in a congregation, not just one.

  Interesting points. I became a Witness in 1973, as a consequence I thought that many of the things that others saw as reforms (or loosening standards) felt normal to me. The congregation I was in, was generally relaxed and open about a lot of things. I THOUGHT I was joining a religion that was turning away from many of the things I disliked about organized religion - ostentatious buildings and rituals, dogmatic understanding of scripture, adherence to tradition, etc. It may be telling that when they started to clamp down again my wife and I no longer felt comfortable with our religion.

  Incidently, I shaved off my beard when I was studying, as soon as I heard that talk about dressing at the KH I grew the moustache back.

  I won't go out of my way to talk to them, I'll ask polite questions when they come to the door. (Hasn't happened in a long time). I haven't seen a JW I know in years, most probably would not recognize me now.

  I was in seventh grade. The school had an assembly of some sort, I think a pep rally in anticipation of a football game that afternoon. At the end of the assembly the principal came up to the mic and made an annoucement that President Kennedy and the Governor of Texas had been shot. That's all anybody knew. The turned on a radio over the school PA system, I was eating lunch when we heard he was dead. I don't think we got anything done the rest of the day.

  Old time JW's did some very devout JW's refuse to eat pizza with pepperroni because they believed "blood" was in the pepperroni?

  i have never heard this before until i read a life story of an ex-jws and how some jws in the past refused to eat pepperoni pizza because they thought blood was in pepperoni.

  i do know some elderly jw sisters would complain about eating steak if it bled while cooking.

  has anybody else heard of this pizza nonsense?.

  PS: the licorice thing. . . Did that have something to do with blood being a possible source of lecithin?

  Yup. I was in a pretty laid back congregation in the seventies but even there, we had a contingent that wouldn't eat anything with lecithin in it. I remember Snickers being mentioned in particular.
