It should be on at 12:37 AM Wednesday morning, on the west coast. That's 07:37 UTC for the techies, Zulu if you've been in the military or GMT for Simon. I think it will be at 11:30 PM Tuesday for the mountain time zone. -

Assembly in Seattle this weekend?
by Lynnie indoes anyone know about an assembly or convention or whatever they call it now in the seattle-tacoma area in the last couple of weeks?
i have a ditzy cousin who posts on fb that the assembly was "promoting peace and the sun.
i'm sure they were really promoting money and the gb but my cousin is so newly brainwashed she has her own twist on everything.

As far as I know all the assemblies are held in a Hall built for that purpose, located in Puyallup. If it was a circuit assembly it would have been there, I think they have one almost every weekend. I live north of Seattle I have not heard of anything special going on, but I don't have any contact with the Borg anymore. -

What is the basis for authority for the governing body?
by Half banana ina word to jehovahs witnesses: what is the basis for the authority the seven members of the governing body can claim in controlling the lives of eight million followers?
the organisation they represent has never got one useful piece of information correct in one hundred and thirty five years... so why should they be believed?.

They use circular reasoning (or used to).
I remember seeing this in a couple of study articles years ago. The FDS teaches the truth about such Bible truths as the trinity, no hellfire, God's kingdom etc. Unlike the rest of Christendom.
A short time later they came out with a statement that we have to believe in such Bible truths as the Trinity, no hellfire, God's Kingdom etc because they've been taught to us by the FDS.

by abiather in2014 was the worst year ever for terrorism: u.s. intel chief (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/wrost-year-global-terrorism-2014-article-1.2130490).
terror attacks reached their highest number in 2014 since 45 years of its history.
in the first nine months of 2014, there were 13,000 terror acts that killed some 31,000 people!

Social change does not equal biological evolution.
We evolved from the wise habit of prevention-better-than-cure to cure-better-than-prevention, then further evolved into fighting the symptoms rather than the roots
You obviously don't know much about medicine, either modern or historical.

Funny, just the other day I was listening to the NPR coverage of the Conti case with my wife and oldest son. Somebody they were interviewing mentioned secret communications to the elders. I said they weren't very secret as I was reading them here all the time.
Download starting, I may have some new blog material.

New "donation" arrangement begins to FAIL
by Tech49 inso here we are, almost a year into the "new" congregation donation arrangement.
and its beginning, as was predicted, to fail miserably, and to have direct negative consequences on the poor sheep.. let me give you a little experience, directly from our congregation of about 80 publishers.
back in may, after reading the letter about the "new" arrangement, the elder body decided to "donate" the extra funds on hand to wt, as directed.

New York, with the exception of the part about being CPA I could have written that post (including the part about the beard). My background is in real estate. I have thought since this started that they have some hurdle rate in mind, and underperforming congregations will be disbanded and merged elsewhere. Then they will sell the building.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall at their financial meetings.

Do You Think President Obama Is Muslim?
by minimus ini really think that he is.
not that it's a bad thing...
-
JeffT
No, I don't believe he is very religious at all. From watching his words and actions I think that religious thought of any kind is not a big part of his world view. He does not seem to grasp how religion of any sort informs the actions and opinions of others. He keeps talking about encouraging religious tolerance, which is great except those that need to learn have no interest in it at all. -

I don't see how anybody could be charged under RICCO, the court decided in favor of the WTBS and gave them possession of the KH. -

Are we pro-shunning or against it?
by Simon injust to continue my theme about religious freedom and how we approach criticizing the wts, i've also been thinking about 'shunning'.. i think shunning is the most unifying complaint that most ex-members of religious groups that practice it have in common.
it is the layer that runs under every other complaint - whatever the reason for leaving it seems "... and i was shunned" can be added to it as the final rap on the charge sheet.. of course it seems like a no-brainer to many of us and we hardly ever stop to really think about it - shunning is bad, the watchtower believes in shunning therefore the watchtower is bad.
they need to stop it.

I think the problem with the JW version of shunning is the official enforcement based on a poor understanding of a biblical incident. Paul wrote about a specific incident, which the WTBS has generalized into a policy statement. Paul did not actually tell the congregation to kick out the sinner, he wrote a letter which would have been read out in public. He pointed out the man's reprehensible conduct and asked why the put up with it. There is no threat to anybody if they chose not to follow his advice.
Note that in his next letter he had to tell them to let the man back in when he changed his behavior. They went to the extreme on the matter and he had to call them out on that.
I've been around other churches since leaving the Watchtower. I've never seen anybody shunned, although I have seen public call outs to change behavior. The attitude of main stream churches is to heal people, not punish them. They also do background checks on people working volunteer positions. I don't think they prevent people from volunteering entirely, they do keep molesters away from children, and thieves away from the contribution box.
