I regard Wikipedia as a good place to start for an overview of a subject. However I would never quote it in a scholarly work. -

Dear typer-ers, you're doing it wrong!
by Simon inthere are many things wrong with the world, many injustices and crimes committed.
what if we could stop one of them?
wouldn't it make the world a slightly better place?

OK, so what about the Oxford comma?
Do you want "cars are available in red, green, black, and white;" or "cars are available in red, green, black and white?" Style guides can be cited for both using it and not using it. Are we following MLA, APA, Chicago, etc; or AP and Canadian Manual?

How do flood apologists explain these?
by marmot inspear points dating to thousands of years before the flood (or even adam's alleged creation, for that matter) found preserved in situ among mammoth bones in naco, arizona.. or the 14,000 year-old footprint of a child at a mammoth hunting camp unearthed in a bog in monte verde, chile:.
the kicker is that this isn't even the oldest evidence for human settlement of the americas.
since the wt loves to trot out frozen mammoth carcasses as "proof" that mammoths died in the flood, who were these mammoth eaters in north america?

warnings are out that radiocarbon may soon find itself in a crisis situation.
Written in 1981. Maybe he and the Watchtower are using the same dictionary to define "soon."

Conti Appeal Preview - Oral Argument Jan 14
by Chaserious inwith hopefully a good deal of interest here in the conti appeal tomorrow (or later today, depending on where you are), i thought that on my ride home from work tonight i'd preview what to expect and what i think the key issues are for any who are interested.
i have had a busy few weeks and haven't had time to read everything, but i had some time to look at the appeal briefs during my work commute the past couple days.
it'll be interesting to see what develops out of the network news coverage of this case.

I don't see this as about reporting crimes to anybody. If the elders know that some one is a pedophile, they have a moral duty to protect the congregation. This doesn't require that the pedo be arrested, it does require that all the elder understand that one of them has to work with Brother Pedo and sit in on his bible studies etc. In other words, he can't be left alone with anybody. -

I was in the house with her for all of the last week of her life. She went quietly and peacefully and had people that cared a lot for her around at the end. She and Dad touched a lot of lives in very positive ways. Not the least of which was the fact that she made sure I was still part of the family even after I joined a religious cult.
Here are two articles, last time I did this some people had trouble linking The Hutch website so I put up a news article too.

What do you think of a Movie about New World
by paradisebeauty init looks like the movies about end of the days and the fantasy movies are very much in fashion.
do you think a movie about the end of the system and the life in the new system could captivate the audiences?.
after all more than 90 % of americans are christians and say they believe in the bible.

The end of the world part might be interesting. But then you have an endless treadmill of petting tigers and picking fruit off of trees. -

I saw some of this on another board. If you divide the hours by the number of baptisms, it takes 7,000 hour to reach one baptism. If you take the amount of the actual increase (which is about 100,000 less than the number of baptisms) it takes 11,000 hours to get one more publisher. This has to be about the most inefficient human activity ever. And that does not account for the fact that a good number of their baptisms are the children of witnesses.

Has anybody ever thought of ways of dealing with this besides banning guns?
In my opinion Simon is on the right track, if we follow that train of thought to its conclusion. Requiring insurance is not a burden. I've got a one million dollar umbrella policy that (bundled with my home and auto insurance) costs $12 a month. We already license gun owners who hunt and carry concealed weapons. Why not license them all?
How about universal safety training? We teach junior high school kids to put condoms on bananas so nobody gets hurt if a loaded penis goes off, why not teach them how to handle a gun? I've been around guns my entire life. I know how to check the safety and determine if a gun is loaded. I also know not to point it at anything I don't plan on shooting. These points got beat into my head so long ago and so emphatically they are now automatic. That kind of training might have prevented this tragedy.
There is a problem with gun culture in this country. That culture is located in our cities, twelve of which are responsible for one quarter of all gun deaths. But we don't talk about that, I guess because its politically incorrect.
Simon, you're point about Canada having lots of guns and far fewer deaths actually proves the point a lot of us are trying to make. Its not the guns, its the people.

Stay sober.
Exercise more.
Once again I'm vowing to work hard on getting a novel published.
