I miss knowing it was all going to be alright , but I realise it was an illusion and a lie. I really hate being lied to.

Parents beware
by IMHO indon't walk around a convention with your child if you are not wearing a convention badge.. you will be questioned as if you are a peadophile.
they will even check with your child (whatever their age) whether you are their parent.. it happened t me.. .
to make it worse an announcement encouraging children to 'seek help' from someone wearing a flourescent jacket.

Religious conventions are no place for children. I strongly believe that there is no place for children where 3 days of religious instruction is being discussed. Thinking back at conventions there was probably no more than 2 hours within the 3 day programme which had content suitable for children and that is being generous. After all immorality, drug abuse, pornography and other unsavoury topics are discussed as well as mental gymnastics with Bible prophecy it is nonsense to expect children to sit still through that.
They have managed to reduce the number of dramas to 1 and to add insult to injury they now pad it out with an hour of talk in order to suck the joy out of the event so that it is now torturous. There may also be 15 minutes within a symposium telling children to obey parents and possibly a real life story or demo where a young child spouts pious drivel. It just seems to be an excuse for parents to slap children in the fresh air. Quite frankly people with out children are intolerant of other people's kids and parents hate all those early arrivers who hog end seats. I can't believe my children were made to go by me.
The children are more in danger from what they may hear at the assembly rather than who they are with so long as parents are vigilent.
The latest is there is no car parking at the venue so we must all travel by coach. Sod that for a game of cricket. I'm going to Alton towers instead.

Does the JW Cult Rob People of Their Humanity!
by LittleSister inwell for those of you who many not know i gave birth to a beautiful baby boy on the 31st jan, however our joy soon turned to concern when it was discovered our son had breathing problems.
this concern later turned to fear as we learned that he had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (cdh) and that he would need an operation asap.. basically our baby had a hole in his diaphragm and most of his digestive system now resided in his left chest cavity compressing his heart and lungs into the remain space in the right cavity.
this is a very serious condition and much of the information we were given made very bleak reading.

I think if people knew the depth of control at the beginning they would never sign up for it. If you knew at the beginning that you would shun family and friends because they chose not to attend your religious meeting, that you would reject family in need because of a rigid moral code and that you were not allowed to question any of it then no one in their right mind would chose this religon.
The religon replaces family with God and then pushes god to one side and replaces God with the organisation. It is so subtle you don't even see it happening. Everyone around you reinforces the message and the conditioning is so strong it is hard to break free.
Now we are breaking free we have started reaching out to Df'd friends, it is then that you appreciate the strength of family and friends. Unfortunately you have to get out to find it again.

Were there any Disfellowshippings during Bible/Ancient times?
by african GB Member inwhen did it all start?.
is there a recorded df'ing in the bible?.
-
nugget
If you go back to Jesus you would have thought that if anyone deserved dfing then it would be Judas but if you look at the bible account Judas remained with the group right up until the last moment. In fact Jesus gave no indication either through word or action that Judas had a lower status than anyone else, otherwise when Jesus said "one of you will betray me" everyone would have guessed it was him and they didn't.
So regardless of the command to shun I feel that if Jesus felt his message was strong enough to withstand association with the imperfect then really what right have I to shun others myself?

The Henrietta Riley fund - Watchtower hypocrisy at its best
by teel inthanks to mary's excellent guide i just found out about the henrietta m. riley trust fund.
there was a heated discussion several years ago, here's the thread: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/11/54708/1.ashx.
basically it is an investment fund whose sole beneficiary is the watchtower society.

Ask yourself - how would they treat a R&F member who was recieving an income or partial income from a portfolio known to hold stocks in a Tobacco or Arms company?

When my husband told me about this I was disgusted. There is no justification for holding shares in a weapons firm. An organisation as powerful as the WTBTS have enough qualified accountants and lawyers on their books to know exactly where all their money is invested. Ignorance is no excuse and negligance is worse.

JW's and home schooling?
by semelcred ini don't wish to offend any that are teaching their kids at home, but today i was again confronted by a situation where a jw family were home schooling.
the kids had little structure to their routine and without putting the mum down, she was no teacher in an academic sense.. the subject is close to my heart because my parents who are witnesses, took my younger brothers out of school and home tutored them.
the were subjected to below standard education and limited in social skills, particularly as my parents are crap at these skills themselves.. i have grown to hate home schooling except in the situation of medical or logistical situations.. what are your comments good or bad and do you think the option to home school is abused by the witness community?.
-

I feel fairly ambivalent about home schooling. In our congregation I know one young man who received his secondary school education at home. I read some of his assignments and was appalled at the lack of structure and coherent argument. In addition he didn't want to know about any flaws he only wanted to know how good his essay was. He seemed to do ok in his exams so it may have been my standards were too high in the first place. I have known other witness children who were homeschooled, they were bright kids but never seemed to reach their full potential since the home schooling was really there to limit their ambitions rather than cultivate them.
My son has special needs and school seems more concerned with teaching him social interaction than educational elements. This means that reading, spellings etc are done at home not at school. He follows a routine at home that encourages him to achieve at school. However I cannot give him the range of social experience he receives in mainstream education. School works well if you fall within a norm, if you are outside of that norm it can struggle. This doesn't mean ordinary schools can't be successful it just means harder work for all concerned.

JWs growing in numbers despite opposition and criticism from apostates and other religious commentators. Why?
by african GB Member ini believe there are now over 7 million jws worldwide(correct me if i am wrong).
what makes this growth possible despite all the exposure on the internet and other media?.
not forgetting court cases and lawsuits.. is this not a sign that perhaps this is the true religion?.

The number of witnesses is worked out on the basis of number reporting. These figures can be misinterpreted espeacially peaks. For example if someone fails to report on a given month but later hands in a report for all 12 months of the service year they are counted as 12 people.
What is more significant is the slowing down of the rate of growth. If you look forward people who have been in the organisation when growth was greater will start dying off and the small rate of growth will start to reverse and become a decline. The society actively discourages couples having children so although some old members are replaced by new births a proportion of growth is required from converts and in the countries with a mature prescene the rate of growth from this source is minimal. The society needs new territory to preach the message and see the best growth and the world is finite.
Bear in mind too that the new system is based on the premise that some older members will still be there at the end. As these die off and middle aged become elderly then the doubts in some members of the R&F will also increase. People who never expected to grow old will be facing their own mortality unprepared. Doubts will inevitably arise.
Growth does not mean truth after all microsoft has grown relatively quickly into a multi billion dollar company but no one suggests that they are worthy of worship.
Jesus said love was how his followers would be identified so that is how we need to judge religon and as far as JWs are concerned they are way down on that one.

Please Suggest An Answer to This Conversation Stopper
by maputo95 inplease suggest an answer to this conversation stopper: i sent the first statement and he responded with the 2nd statement:.
equivocation:.
the bible forbids "taking in" blood.
-
nugget
I appreciate the clarity of the response but really it is disingenuous. The Society does not abstain from blood in that we eat meat. We also can take blood factors providing our consciences are not bothered. We can recycle our own blood through the use of cell savers. This issue is not as cut and dried as the statement indicates. As the society is constantly revising what abstention from blood really means then it is fair that this topic is open for debate and analysis.
