WTS Internet is bad - quotes in print from the publications

thought it would be a useful exercise to create a thread with a list of as many as possible official 'in print' quotes about avoiding the internet.. not 'well a co said at our assembly last week we shouldn't be on facebook'.

this will be a great resource for anti-witnessing anytime we come across jw's online - by their own words we condemn them..... any takers to get us started.....<i don't have a cd-rom otherwise i would get going.....>.

Also, for a couple of quotes advising Witnesses to avoid the Internet (or parts of it) in general (which was probably more what you were after, to use as 'debate ammo' when talking to active Witnesses, right?):

? You are invited to a party where alcohol and possibly drugs will be freely available.

That is why it is important to be cautious about repeating or forwarding unverified accounts. We surely would not want to repeat “godless myths,” or “false stories which violate what is holy.” (1 Timothy 4:7; New International Version) Since we also have an obligation to speak truthfully to one another, we are acting wisely by avoiding anything that would cause us even unwittingly to spread untruths.—Ephesians 4:25.

It is unwise to circulate unverified reports.

I got 797 results by searching 'Internet' on the 2008 Watchtower Library program. I'd say roughly 90% of those entries were warnings against what the Watchtower perceives as "the dangers of the Internet" - Mostly pornography, time wasting, chat rooms, false information and apostate material.Here are a select few of those:Watchtower '04 - 15th Feb"How can we guard against being deceived by apostates? nightmares after leaving

hello everyone, i have been reading the different topics and haven't seen this discussed..... i was raised in the 'truth' and decided when i was 19 this was not for me...but unfortunately it took years after that to finally make the clean break.

during that time and up until about a year ago, i was having strange and disturbing nightmares..it finally came to a head when i dreamed that i cussed out the elders in the congregation i had left.,..woke up in a sweat but felt great!

has anyone else experienced this?

Yup. While I was in my last few years still totally believing what the Witnesses taught, but having strong moral objections to it, I used to have a lot of very vivid dreams about dying in Armageddon. Usually they would involve me desperately racing to get home to tell my family that I loved them and goodbye, but I'd never get there in time. I'd feel God catch up to me, then I'd wake up.

Now I'm not a Witness anymore in my heart, but I still have to keep the pretense up for my family. I have dreams about making a massive scene at the meetings and walking out, or having massive heated, no-going-back-from arguements with my parents where I'd prove to them that everything about the Org was a lie.

Apparently my subconcious is very literal when it comes to my religon-based dreams!

this was a favorite way of getting away from the very unloving "loving brothers and sisters".

hide in the toilets, no one can collar you and tell you off.

and even better you won't be in amongst a group of people but still feeling so alone... at least you will actauly be alone!.

lol! You have no idea how great it is to hear how many people feel and do exactly the same as me at the assemblies and meetings! When you're in a place where it feels like you're the only one experiencing negative emotions so intence you just have to lock yourself away from it all, it can be really isolating. When I have to go to another horrible assembly, I'll just remember all the other Dubs and closet ex-Dubs locked in the loos like me!

I'd hide in the toilets or the coat room after the meetings to avoid be accosted by people after the meetings. I hated that fact that Witnesses had absolutely zero sense of personal boundries! I would be petting and stroked like a damn animal, which was especially difficult for me because I hate anyone that isn't my close family or friends to touch me - at all!

At the local assembly, about 3 years leading up to me finally leaving, I would get really distressed and panicy having to listen to talk after talk, so I stopped sitting in the main hall and would sit by myself in the back of the cafe. But that didn't work well because every 15 minutes someone would feel the need to come over and try to 'comfort me' and convince me to come sit with them and I'd have to keep making up excuses.
In the end I just got in the habit of bringing a thick, fluffy coat with me to assemblies. I'd lock myself in one of the upstairs toilets, fold my coat up and go to sleep leaning against the wall for the duration.

Oh, don't worry. I definitely do not make an effort to suger-coat the type of organisation that they are in conversations with people. As I said, I do agree that many of their doctrines are extreme and certainly their vision of the destruction and mass genocide to occure at the end of things is highly distrubing.
I usually refer to them as a highly controlling and destructive religion with many cult-type attributes and control techniques. I find this stops people from immediately conjuring the mental image of the Jones Tower massacre or Jihad suicide bombers and realise that Witnesses are far, far more subtle than that.
The danger of bandying around such loaded words is that people will asign their own meaning to them unless you clarify. If you tell someone that Witnesses are extremists and they go away with the idea that Witnesses are like terrorists (which, for a lot of people, is what they think of when they hear the word 'extremist') then, when they meet a Witness and find that they're actually really friendly and charming, they might be less inclined to listen to your warning against them!

The sad thing is, when I was still a Witness but having moral dilemas over some of the teachings, that story would have scared me.
Being a Witness officially docks your IQ by at least two thirds!
