Double Standards

did anyone else have witness parents who the congregation thought were the "model" family, yet behind closed doors all hell broke loose?

i remember a time when my family was choosen to do a part at an assembly about the ideal family- yet behind the scenes, we were beat, yelled at, sworn at, never studied, had a family from hell, yet others always commented how "perfect" and christian our family was.

being a witness leaves deep & permanent scars.

WHAT??? I can't think of anything to justify this one! And I thought OUR congregation was messed up!

If you're in Cedar Rapids, I think we would have been in the same circuit-but I've been out for quite awhile. Anyway, we're only about an hour and a half east of you! Great to know that there are other Iowans here!

Edited to add: 13th Apostate-gotta go to the atlas to see just where Waterloo is...

and to add-Perfection Seeker-don't worry, we won't tell. I did the fade-out, too. Not particularly anxious to be disfellowshipped because it would make my family (already weird because of this religion) weirder yet!

Eric-no apology necessary! I know how the boards can do that-we were probably typing our replies at the same time. Anyway, I loved your story and the mental picture I got of these two kids enjoying the rides and eating cotton candy instead of sitting at the assembly! I was 13 or 14 at that assembly I remember and it was probably in the 71/72ish era too...wish I'd been with you on the ferris wheel-roller coasters make me...um...sick!

I can remember one particularly nasty assembly in Kansas City, MO. The temp. was in the upper 90's. Literally sat and watched the top of my knees blister in the sun. It was beastly hot and if you went inside the concourse for a bit of shade, the attendants would tell you to go to your seat. GRRRR!

It was also at that assembly that a baby died. The parents had put it in one of those carriers in front of their seats (squeezed in because there was NO ROOM between the rows. They covered it with a light blanket to keep the sun off and it suffocated from the heat and lack of air under the blanket.

It was also the assembly where my Mom passed out cold standing in line for some assembly food. She (and we kids) were all carried off to the "first aid" where there were DOZENS of other folks who had passed out from the heat. The first aid was air conditioned so I whispered to Mom that she should stay groggy looking as long as possible.

It was also the assembly where I was baptized. Bad chi all around...

i just got out from jw bye a d.f.

4 weeks ago after 44 years as an active jw.am i insane or why am i having that great feeling of freedom??

i am sitting here infront of the computer having a cold beer and just enjoying life.shouldnt i be crying and having a depression sitting here in tears over missing all my jw friends that now are vanished??.

Congratulations on your disfellowshipping! That feeling of a HUGE relief is one of the big secrets "The Society" doesn't want its servants to know about.

So much for "weeping and gnashing of teeth"!!!

I developed a tiny, tiny little black spot on my cheek about 6 mo or so ago. It worried me a bit, but I pushed it out of my mind. Then, we bought some episodes of Monty Python on tape and were watching them with the kids. There was a animated bit where it had something about a person noticing a "spot on his cheek" but ignoring it and being dead two years later. Had my check-up a couple of weeks ago and mentioned the spot (feeling silly) to my doctor. He was SUPPOSED to say, "That tiny thing, nothing to worry about!" Instead he looked at it, put on magnifying glasses and looked at it again and then suggested I stick around for ten minutes and they would take it off right away.

They removed and biopsied it and the biopsy came back fine. But it was a scare and I was glad that my kids watched that Monty Python bit about twenty times because every time I heard it I got a little more nervous...

Mom - Why do you treat me like the damned!

not that my mom would ever visit this site - but i have to just vent.

last night my mom promised she would meet me at home to help me move some furniture.

she made it seem like it was a tremendous deal and the only reason why she would be by would be because she had something else to do in the neighbourhood.

((((Zenpunk)))))) I'm sure you'll find lots of empathy here!!! My family is very weird because of the some-in-some-disfellowshipped-some-drifted-away-some-never-in dynamics. My Mom depends on my husband and I alot because we live the closest to her and she waffles back and forth between trying to be a good dub and a mother. My husband (the worldly guy that the elders warned against) mows her lawn every week, takes care of things around her house and doesn't complain (well not much anyway) when I ask her if she wants to ride along when we go someplace. I notice that though she is a "widow" and an "older woman", the congregation never worries about any of those things. We take care of her business when she goes to assembly. Yet she's made to feel guilty if she is here on the kids birthday or if we invite her up to supper on Christmas Day (not really a holiday meal, we do that Christmas Eve.)

I don't necessarily get angry about the time I spent as a Witness (pointless), but I do still get mad at how they continue to mess up my family (also pointless, I know). No words of wisdom, but I do understand!
