  I COULDN'T DO IT!!!!

  i know i just posted a few hours ago- but need to vent.

  my mom was at the district convention last weekend.

  i had found this site shortly before she went.

  Perfection-

  I was thinking what Outlaw said. I wouldn't try to push the religious issue. If you want to have a relationship with her, you might just need to let that be something you ignore-sort of like the proverbial elephant in the middle of the room. My Mom still tries to preach to me sometimes. I just respectfully stay quiet and try to let it roll off my back. I don't try to convert her because I know that: 1. It's a lost cause and 2. she would be lost without the social structure she has been building-exclusively within this religion-for 30+ years.

  Sadly, I do find that we naturally don't spend lots of time together partly because of the preaching-and partly because she can't come to any of the family gatherings I have-kids' birthdays, soup supper on Christmas Day, etc. ad infinitum.

  I don't have any wise words for you, but I can tell you that I can honestly say I know how you feel

  JW Bus Accident on Way to Convention

  how many on that bus were happy that they either didn't end up going to the convention or got there late?

  (i would have been happy!!!).

  My Mom often takes a bus to assemblies. She always raves about how wonderful it is. When she was telling me about the last assembly, she said that they sang "Kindom Songs" all the way there and back for both days.

  I couldn't help but think of that poor bus driver. I would have had the urge to jump from the bus at 65 mph rather than listen to that for ONE MORE MILE!!! I had this picture of a solemn ceremony at the bus station where the drivers gather to draw straws as to who has to sacrifice him/herself in the line of duty and drive for Witnesses.

  Hope he had headphones and some good CD's...

  3 and 23, I'm sorry to say. Unless, of course we already knew what was going on. This was when I was younger.

  As I got to be an older teen, there were a couple of disfellowshippings that were due to the fact that the disfellowshipees had tried to stand up to some really bad moves on the elders' parts. I was getting jaded by then and knew those dsfwshpings didn't have anything to do with sin but everything to do with power.

  Most Embarrasing Witness Moment from Childhood

  anyone on here have a "most embarrasing witness moment" from childhood?

  mine is from 7th grade- that was 20 years ago- but i still cringe when i think of it.

  almost too hard to write down- but maybe it will be therapeutic & part of the healing process?

  Once I was sitting in the school cafeteria reading while everybody else was at a pep rally in the gym. The Superintendent came walking through and asked what I was doing. I explained that I didn't attend pep rallies (had already cleared this a couple of years before with the principal-I'd been sitting in the cafeteria for two years). He took offense and lost his temper completely. Said I was a member of the student body "Goddammit" and would go to the "Goddamn pep-rally". He grabbed me by the upper arm and marched me down the hall to the gym. Pushed me through the door and stood there, in full view of the entire student body holding me by the arms. I actually had finger mark bruises the next day. Then I was humiliated (though I remember standing there as tall as I could with my chin up so he wouldn't see it), now I'd sue his ass!

  JWs Locked in Cellar

  does anyone remember the news report about an old lady who was so fed up with the dubs coming to her door that she locked two of them up in her cellar?

  the dubs were missing for some time before the other dubs who'd been in fs with them called the police who eventually found the ones in the cellar.. my question: shouldn't the dubs have gone to the elders instead of bringing the police into it?

  that's how they handle other problems...

  Hey, that was MY trick. We used to have to go in the "rurals" all the time. When it would be my sister and I, I'd stand so that it would LOOK like I was knocking when I wasn't actually touching the door. LOL

  Then we were supposed to leave a magazine by opening the screen and tucking it between the screen and the door. If you pulled this trick, you'd have to PRAY (ironically) that if there WAS someone home they wouldn't think somebody was trying to break in...

  Hugs to you Mulan!!

  Sounds like such a difficult situation...and like you've tried to take good care of her. In some ways what you wrote reminds me of my Mom. Things will be going along relatively smoothly and then something happens to completely upset the apple cart. I've suspected some type of bipolar disorder for a long time but she would never consider such a thing.

  Double Standards

  did anyone else have witness parents who the congregation thought were the "model" family, yet behind closed doors all hell broke loose?

  i remember a time when my family was choosen to do a part at an assembly about the ideal family- yet behind the scenes, we were beat, yelled at, sworn at, never studied, had a family from hell, yet others always commented how "perfect" and christian our family was.

  being a witness leaves deep & permanent scars.

  WHAT??? I can't think of anything to justify this one! And I thought OUR congregation was messed up!

  If you're in Cedar Rapids, I think we would have been in the same circuit-but I've been out for quite awhile. Anyway, we're only about an hour and a half east of you! Great to know that there are other Iowans here!

  Edited to add: 13th Apostate-gotta go to the atlas to see just where Waterloo is...

  and to add-Perfection Seeker-don't worry, we won't tell. I did the fade-out, too. Not particularly anxious to be disfellowshipped because it would make my family (already weird because of this religion) weirder yet!

  Eric-no apology necessary! I know how the boards can do that-we were probably typing our replies at the same time. Anyway, I loved your story and the mental picture I got of these two kids enjoying the rides and eating cotton candy instead of sitting at the assembly! I was 13 or 14 at that assembly I remember and it was probably in the 71/72ish era too...wish I'd been with you on the ferris wheel-roller coasters make me...um...sick!
