Things I love about Texas

Okay... I'll add to this...

San Antonio - the elevator in the Tower Life building. It moves FAST!

The view from the top of the Tower of Americas - which is over 500 feet up (is that my house I see waaaay over there?)

Blanco - The Bowling Alley Cafe - a great place to eat breakfast, and listen to the locals

Bandera - the Super S store is a hoot to shop in

Medina Lake - my small lot - and the area around it is awesome - the lake is pleasant to look at

Hwy 281 North - from San Antonio to Marble Falls - a great drive in the springtime (or anytime)

Hwy 1431 - from Marble Falls to Austin - another windy-twisty road that is awesome to drive... but not too fast, or you'll go off the road.

Park Road 4 - just north of Marble Falls - a true roller coaster of a drive - best driven at 70mph - just hold on tight to the steering wheel

The Wal-Mart in Marble Falls - well... you'd just have to be there - to understand that one

The Candle Factory in Georgetown - just north of Austin on IH-35 - they have the best candles I have ever seen

The San Gabriel River in Georgetown - a nice place to picnic and watch people - and ducks

San Marcos - a great place to swim and shop (Paper Bear's) and just hang out in - the folks are really nice there

many many other places... mostly along the roads as I drive... that make me smile

Nuisance rooster?!?

yesterday at 5:00 am i awoke to a rooster crowing.

he crowed for 10 minutes and then kept quiet for 10 minutes.

just enough to allow me to fall back to sleep before starting up again.

This reminds me of the time... (hears collective groan)

When I was about 21 or so, I was living on my own. I had just moved out of my mom's house, and was sharing an apartment with a fella named David.

Now, David wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree. He decided that he wanted to have chickens on the property... for eggs and such. We lived on about 3 acres of land, inside the city limits, but just south of the city - enough to make us in the country.

He got several chickens, and a rooster.

We both worked - those were my 'lean' years... when I worked like a dog, and got paid little - but was happy. We both had jobs that went through the night hours. My hours were midnight to 6am, and Davids' were similar.

I was a dj - David a janitor. Anyway, we would car-pool, as we worked at companies that were near each other. At 6am - after a long night... we would both be beat - and looking forward to a good sleep once we got home.

When we would get home - we would both go to our respective beds... and crash. My bed was a sleeping bag on top of a wooden door.

Well... the sun would juuuuuust be coming up... and that rooster would hop up on the back concrete porch (not the only place he could've gone), and CROW into the house! *mumbles - expletive*

I would groan, and get up and go 'shoo' the rooster off the porch - and stumble back to bed. Not more than 3 minutes later, he was back, and informing us that it was daylight - and time to get up - cock-a-doodle-doo!!!!! *groan*

This would go on for a bit... I tell ya... I had visions of fried chicken dancing in my head. *mumbles - stupid rooster*

I'm not quite sure how that 'problem' got solved... but I needed sleep. Badly. I would usually sleep for a few hours - and then get up - and do a semi-normal day - before going back into work again that evening at midnight.

Oh yeah... my dog Weasel, he just LOVED to chase those chickens. He wouldn't hurt them - he would just chase them whenever I came home - to show me that he was 'in charge' and taking care of things while I was gone.

Well... this is kinda funny in a way... I get this mental image of them making a door-knocking visit on some poor individual... clueless as to what's going on... telling them to go away.

Yup - no interest - yet. Let's call back in a few months - see if they change their mind. *makes note on card - as they walk to car*

Unlicensed or "Pirate" Radio Station

there's a pirate radio station broadcasting near me.

exactly what is the law regarding them?

It depends on the power that the broadcast station is using... there are Part 15 - Unlicensed broadcast stations allowed... but their range is usually limited to only the 'neighborhood'.

High Schools usually use these - to cover the campus.

If he is being received for more than a few miles - then he is broadcasting with too much power - and the FCC would be very interested in 'talking' to him (spelled confiscation of equipment).

hi all.. many of you have probably seen my posts on here before, but if you haven't let me reinterate my story in short for you.. i am currently dating a wonderful guy, but the problem is he has been considering becoming a jw.

he has studdied with them for about a year.

because of me has agreed to do some religion searching and figure out what he really believes.

Ummm... the _best_ way to 'prove' it - is to have him get baptized - then commit some infraction that is considered a DFing offense - and he'll soon _know_ it's real, when it happens to him.

Bad haircut stories...?

i do not have a bad haircut.... let's just say that my son is not happy now.

this was not intentional; it was a matter of misunderstanding what he wanted.

when i was a junior, my mother got angry that my limp hair would not curl like hers could.

Hmmm... well two stories...

When I was a wee lad... of 5 or 6... I found some old rusty scissors in the backyard. I showed them to my mom, who promptly made some negative remark about how they were old and useless.

Well... I worked with them... until I got them to 'scissor'... I think they were like 'school scissors'... you know the ones - the rounded tips, so you couldn't hurt yourself.

Anyway, when I got them to work... I had to try them out... on something. So, I took a bit of hair from the top of my head and cut it off. They worked.

Only... my parents didn't think I did such a good job - and I got ridiculed for doing it. *frowns*

Yeah. I know _now_ that I shouldn't have done that... but... there are better ways to let a youngster know that.

Story #2 -

When I was a teenager... well... probably near 18 or 19... there was a Barber College - where they trained barbers. They needed guinea pigs - so they had reduced prices for the general public. I think it was like fifty-cents or so for a regular haircut - no frills.

One time, we went there - sans parent (my mom), and got our haircuts. When we got home... she lambasted us - or me - because it was not 'short enough' - and sent us all the way back to get it cut shorter. *sigh* (Talk about embarassed.)

Soooo... after that... I always made sure I told the fella doing the cutting... "Shorter. It has to pass inspection."

One fella - after hearing that the second time in one session asked... "Inspection? You in the military?"

"No." I replied, "My mom."

My brother - long after that - would still get his hair cut so short... it was a pitiful sight to see.

12,000-Year-Old Bones Found in Kansas

i thought the following was an interesting story.

i note that it seems there are some in the world who use an accuracy error to completely discount the carbon 14 to carbon 12 ratio when dating materials.

please note that when reading the following story, the carbon 14 dating has a particular "accuracy error".

Where this 'JW' logic that you are sharing fails is that... 'man' would have had to really 'hot-foot' it from waaaaaay over there (near Eden) to waaaaaay over here... (Kansas - "Oh,Toto! I don't think we're in... Eden anymore!") set up camp - and go out to start killing animals with rock tools.

But wait! Killing animals for food didn't happen till after the fabled flood. So... add a few thouand years to that... ooooohhhhh my brain hurts.

Bottom line -

This 12,000 year estimate is pretty reasonable - and does NOT have to coincide with a silly book called the 'bible' - or any JW teachings.

There _were_ people here on earth prior to 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. I personally don't think they were as 'backwards' as the archeologists try to make them out to be.
