Even though I found it after i decided to start fading from the jw's the website www.jwfacts.com was a great site, i think its one of the most objective places on te internet.

Which Websites Helped You Leave the WT?
by FreudianSlip inthe website that finally opened my eyes to the wt's lies was this one: http://www.towerwatch.com/testimonies/judicial_committee_meeting.htm.
it is an excellent read.
i even wrote to the guy, james caputo, to show appreciation for his courage to post his story on the www all those years ago when there weren't yet a ton of ex-jw sites.

The Cult of "El", paganism in bible? Saturn=Satan?
by EndofMysteries inwould appreciate any additional help and research into this.
if any of you have researched this at all would appreciate your findings and conclusions.
do not want to stumble anyone, so just be warned this could do that if you believe at the very least the english translations of the bible are pure.

Acharya S who wrote that drivel.... *sigh* and actually believes it, she's not one I'd recommend going to for biblical history, language, time lines, well basically anything. What Acharya says is right on the same level of idiotic babble as the witnesses... maybe even lower. I've researched it before and its a complete dead end with you just viewing the Zeitgist youtube video over and over in different snippets on different websites that try to use the author's "evidence" as fact..
I've found this website a year or two ago: Problems with Acharya S
Its very well written and highlights the problems you'll encounter when you put up what she says to the evidence of actual history.
There are one or two youtube videos refuting the topic as well, if you want them, i'll dig through my bookmarks and post them.
Most of what she says comes from a slant that christianity copied borrowed stories from ancient mystical gods of that were worshipped prior to Jesus' appearance. It would be nice if they had actual evidence though. At the moment, you just have lots of assumptions, and really really bad things like what you quoted above :
Under "El" specifically, that "El" the name of God, and many words associated with "El" related to that as well. An ancient "cult of El". ELoihim, apostLE, discipLE, ELder, ELect.
haha, reading that almost made me laugh as hard as the time I heard Jordan Maxwell (Acharya's co-hort) say that Yahweh was an "expression of sexual release."
I wouldnt recommend following this path of research much further.

Thanks for sharing this story! I know how tough it is to finally decide to post your thoughts. Especially reliving the memories..
You having to walk to the hall is such a familiar thing, unless you are part of the "in" crowd, you can forget about rides. Especially
if you weren't in the direction someone was going home. It was heart breaking to read how the other witness kids were bitter
at you just for following the rules.

Are JWs attracting more and more off-center people?
by undercover inthis thread is prompted by the thread about a jw woman who disprupted a funeral.
i don't know the details as i can't view youtube from work, but it did get me to thinking.... over the last couple of decades, at least, i've noticed that more and more 'fringe personalities', for a lack of a better term, have infiltrated the ranks of the everyday jws.
true, jws are themselves a fringe element to normal society, but even within their own communities, there used to be a sense of normalcy, or at least seemed to be.. has the cultic message of the wt society started attracting people with different thought processes over this time period?

I don't think its the way the message is presented. There's a lot thats tucked into this religion then whats on the surface, so that factors greatly into who joins the religion. Everyone is presented with a nicely decorated box, but its full of garbage, but you're made some many commitments by that point that you're almost slapping yourself on the forehead for doing what you did when you finally realize that you DID join something insane.
Its just that among the ranks of Jehovah's Witnesses you have the other groups, the fringe people that didnt have anywhere else to belong, lonely elderly people that were looking for someone to care about them, the teenager who found the glittering box appealing and those who may have just been interested in wanting to learn more about the bible. That is by no means an exhaustive list of the types that come to the hall, but it represents the fair share of people I've come in contact with over the years. So its not that people are crazy, loony, or not quite right. In our own way, we were all regular people who was given a nice package and was disappointed by what was inside.

I'm Out
by Cthulhu inwednesday night i recieved a call from both the coeb and the kingdom hall.
i didn't answer.
yesterday i called him back and i was informed that unless i wanted to talk to the brothers they had determined that my actions spoke for themselves and that i had by those actions disassociated myself.

I dont feel "abused" by the Elders... in my situation, which i'll delve into when I have a spare moment to type a lot, I feel like i was "used" like an object and a wallet.

Gideon--He Questioned Jehovah
by sd-7 init is common, as a thought-stopping mechanism amongst jehovah's witnesses, to use phrases like "don't question jehovah" or "don't question the organization".
often, as evidenced in a recent watchtower study article, biblical examples are given like that of diotrephes, who opposed john in the first century, or korah, dathan, and abiram, who questioned moses' authority and were barbecued in the wilderness.
these are pointed to as examples of those who questioned jehovah and suffered condemnation or even death as a result.

Quite a few bible characters asked doubtful questions to Jehovah and HE condescended and gave proof. Like with Abraham and the case of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham questioned whether God could be more leanant in his judgement against the cities if righteous people were found in them.
You can NOT question ANYTHING the Governing Body says or you're not being a "faithful footstep follower"... you can't even question the Elders. remember NONE of these supposed sheperds are divinely inspired, but you cross them or disagree with them and you're toast. They might do this out of spite, or heartlessness, but its just how the arrangement is setup.

Wobble,
Unless the Elder's at the hall you used to attend get a hold of you somehow, they can't disfellowship or disassociate you. You will just be listed as "inactive" until they get some status update on you, which the Elders might do by either stopping by randomly or calling by telephone. If you are disassociated or disfellowshipped , you can appeal the decision if you'd like too.

Cult expert S.Hassan speaks out on witnesses in Russia.

I enjoyed both videos that were posted. I have to say though, that governments always have a hard time coming up with a law thats fair to those who are cults and those who are just religious (liked Buddist and those who may believe in other earth based religions). The JW's , Mormons and the rest should disclose more about their religious practices besides just the preaching campaign. But that won't happen, because they would lose a lot of the control they would like to have over the "flock" so to speak.

Is the Governing Body really Jehovah's mouthpiece?
by dgp inon another thread, african gb member wondered whether the members of the governing body really believe what they preach.
and that led me to this thought:.
unless i misunderstood what i have read, the governing body claims that jehovah communicates with them and tells them what to do.

I would have to say that, NO , they aren't Jehovah's mouth piece, since they stated over and over again that
they AREN'T divinely inspired and are just people looking at scriptures and making random comments about it.
“We have not the gift of prophecy.” Jan. 1883
The Watchtower has also said that the fact that some have Jehovah’s spirit “does not mean those now serving as Jehovah’s witnesses are inspired. It does not mean that the writings in this magazine The Watchtower are inspired and infallible and without mistakes.” (May 15, 1947, page 157)
“The Watchtower does not claim to be inspired in its utterances, nor is it dogmatic.” (August 15, 1950, page 263)
If they aren't divinely inspired, then they have NO connection to Jehovah, so they are a bunch of babbling control freaks.
