knowing that passions run deep on this matter, i have what i believe to be a very simple premise for a discussion of how to read the bible.. terry has labored over the last couple of months to demonstrate (in my view, conclusively) that the bible is far from unaltered, and often mistranslated.
these facts, inconvenient as they might be for believers, are nonetheless, a problem for those who claim that the bible is the word of god.. this is not what i wish to discuss... rather..... jehovah's witnesses come from a tradition of "reading in" or "adding meaning" to the scriptures.
no one jw outside of the governing body is allowed to do this.. but why is it necesarry?.
Quick question....When paul said that a man had been caught up in heaven (whether in body or spirit he did not know) and was still on earth, what did that mean?
Is ALL of the bible literal or symbolic, how do you know which parts? was man literally created from dust? did the snake really talk?

i wrote also to all 129 bethel-homes around the world and suggested them to search on youtube on illuminati, freemasons, 666, new world order, fema coffins, fema concentration camps, rfid chip, rockefeller, antichrist.. very interesting stuff!

See, those aren't prophecies. They are vague descriptions that could mean almost anything at anytime. Where is the prophecy? Its a lot of "could be" and "possible".

First you'll see in the first few about a (nation, congregation, crowd, civilization, great multitude, king of north, those loving you) being (whistled, raised up, signaled, etc) who is of (the north, Assyria, long ago, flies of the nile, from the extremities) and shall (flood over, pass through) and (eat, consume, like locusts, outspreading of his wings) against (jerusalem, prostitute, judah, king of south, kain, land of Immanuel) and the ships of kittim will come against him and he will be dejected
So...some group from somewhere is somethinged and they get somethinged else and then do something to some other people from somewhere else and then are sad?

this has been a wt buzzword for a long time but has come up in several recent discussions here.
so, i just had to look it up on the wt library cd-rom.. the word "evidently" appears 1,439 times in the insight books alone.
that number is staggering considering that the two-volume set is supposed to be comprised of encyclopedic facts.

just within the bible itself, any scriptures you have supporting your statement or just historical references? Even if just that, any you would share I'd like to look at
You're starting out with a bias.."or just historical references"... wilful ignorance is so sad. try googling "yahweh el" and read what you find.
this was a late medieval book printed not long after the gutenberg process became available.
it is a treatise on how to discover, question by torture, and execute witches.. it is thought that several thousand were printed over the years (maybe second only to the bible in distribution in its day) - and that this was in large part responsible for the witch hunts in europe.
the final example here in the americas - the salem witch trials.. it made me think about the jw propensity (and secret love of) all things "demonic".
The How the Earth Was Made series is also excellent. If anything could make the JW literalists (flood, short time creation, etc.) take notice, this would be it.
No, no it wouldn't. They just say "the ice age happened, but all the water came from the flood. of course there were whales in the sahara because of the flood. of course the continents used to be a single giant continent, the flood pushed them apart..." or they just say how science doesn't know everything and changes the meaning of the word generation all the time, er, story, science changes their story.
I know this from experience.
