  What did (do) u want to be when u grew up?

  i was born in the mid 1950's and raised as a jw so i did not need to consider or worry about this...why?...because it was instilled into me that i would never have to worry about being old enough to be anything in this "old system of things".. as the years went by:.

  1970-something...out of school...no "new system"no need for more training, just a few years left... no "new system"got a job, married,... no "new system""waking up" 50+ years later...still no "new system"this was the mind set of so many raised as jw's, and we are now finding ourselves trying to adjust our lives to weather the years that we have left...in order to make the best of them.. please... if you are still an active jw (or not) get an a good education so you can support yourself and prepare for retirement, and don't be afraid to talk to others about how to do this so you can make an informed decision on what is best for you.so what did (do) you want to be when you grow up?

  I stopped going to the Kingdom Hall

  in late 1976, i had just turned 17. everyone in my family dropped out over the next few years, except a a brother who has been going strong his whole life.

  my mother went back a couple of years ago and i live in the same town as she does and she keeps talking to me about it.

  reading this forum, it sure brings back a lot of memories.

  Welcome FloridaPerry,

  I was never the sharpest where JW doctrine was concerned but if ever anything was mentioned about Jesus being great or having power, it was always qualified by it being less that Jah. He also seemed a bit of a silent observer now as all the work was being done by the GB. I doubt I'd come to that conclusion now if I read the bible independently.

  Our childhoods and parents will still have an effect on us in later years irrespective of what religion they were part of. When reading through experiences on JWN it does help one identify what relates to the cult though - pretty scary reading at times. There are a lot of us here who have gone through similar things.

  Welcome back Botz,

  Something has just occurred to me. Botz comes back, apologises and is treated like the prodigal son.

  Lets turn the tables and ask what would have happened had he come back to the truth having debated so subversively (i.e. been an apostate)? He'd have to endure a study with an elder to demostrate his true repentance, endure being shunned for the best part of a year by everyone and have a stain on his character for the rest of his life.

  Isn't it great to be on a forum where rules of membership allow people to treat each other normally and not have to enforce some vindictive shunning process?

  Botz, when I stopped going to meetings I worked really hard and kept busy with hobbies so I had a substitute. The down side was it put my career back on track, I earned lots of money, got some self esteem and had a great time doing things I'd always wanted to do.

  How is your wife taking all of this - does she still go to meetings?

  So they called you Raveen and brought you up in a cult? Plenty of successful actors and actresses have unusual names. Makes you memorable. I'd maybe have words about the cult thing though.

  Do you believe that Armstrong was really on the moon?

  some are sure he wasn't and some sure that he was.. i want to believe that he was there.. just interesting to hear what you think?.

  I don't believe they did or didn't. Given the limited evidence that I have been presented with in media I think that the probability is strong.

  Do you believe that man has taken off from the earth and landed on it? So why is it so unreasonable to believe that man could land and take off from the moon which has an easier gravity to deal with?

  It's so very hard to keep a secret that involves so many people. Especially if it's a lie.

  nothing spectacular but you may relate to some of my emotions.. it was nearly 5 years ago now.

  i had almost left twice before but changed my mind at the last minute.

  this time i knew it was for real.

  I didn't go to that last meeting - I decided not to. My team were in a cup final that day and I was secretly hoping I'd get to see the match but I was too busy dealing with family. A couple of years later I got to go to the final on my birthday and saw them lift the trophy.

  How did your wife take the news after the meeting?
