  I am new here too!

  for a long while i have been coming to this site on a daily basis and i think it is time to introduce myself.

  here we go: my parents learned the truth when i was 4 and i don't have childhood memories of how life was before they converted.

  i was a model jw child, although quite mischievous at school.

  i'll start off.. i don't believe anything is divine about bible writings.

  i believe there may be some marginal history although not much.

  i think alot of folk tales and regional myths are contained in the old testament.

  I believe the message of the Bible to be inspired, namely, we are mortally flawed creatures who are desperately in need of a Savior.

  I believe the God of the Bible to be that Savior.

  I believe the Bible itself is only as inerrant as the men who compiled it.

  This isn't internally consistent--it's self-contradictory. How can you claim both to know the true message of the bible, and that it's divinely inspired, while admitting that the channel which has brought you the message is inherently flawed?

  so this isn't one of the normal zomg teh witnesses h8 educashun!!!

  rather, i'd just like to note that i was reading about paul today, and remembered that not only did he have an extremely good education for his time and speak, write, and read multiple languages, he was also aware of, and educated about, all of those horrible, worldly, ungodly philosophies that the jws are so scared of.. of course, when they're harping on the "you don't need college" bs, they never note that or take the more plausible line that education would help people defend their faith rationally (because it's not about beliefs anymore) because they know that taking an introductory logic course and two semesters of world history would sink any and all belief in what they say.... just a few thoughts..

  Forget the world history, intro logic should be sufficient, if they actually get it. ;-) And you nailed it--it's almost impossible to have your brain truly turned on and in use, and remain in a cult--at least, not without imploding/exploding at some point.

  i was talking several days ago with a believer who was telling me what an atheist is.

  i personally do not have any gods, therefore i consider myself an atheist.

  however this person was telling me that an atheist says there is no god.

  @Terry: I agree with what you've said here, in the abstract. However....

  When a theist goes so far as to describe their deity in great detail, outlining his supposed qualities, powers, etc, then at that point, one is able to take the implications that such a deity would have on the world, and contrast and compare this to the world our senses present to us. When we find blatant, irreconcilable differences in these two universes--the one our senses indicates and the one this god would imply--we are able safely to say "This version of god does not exist, and in regards to it, I am an atheist." All the while realizing, of course, that this is an "opinion", but based on positive evidence of how the perceivable universe exists in utter contrast to this god's supposed qualities and powers, and not based merely on lack of direct evidence of the god's existence.
