Does the US make mistakes? They do as does every person, nation and leaders. I would still rather live here in the US than anywhere else in the world. If you don't feel that way why are you still here?
Are they always the good guy? Why don't you ask those who have benefited from the blood of our Marines, Air Force, Army, National Guard and Navy? (and the Coast Guard and Ready Reserves.)
Carla,
Your points are well taken and should be given serious consideration. Perhaps if we looked back to the times when Israel killed and conquered and ask ourselves, was that wrong? Does God disagree with killing and worse still will He punish such killers and exclude them from His Kingdom? And how did Cornelius get into the Faith while still being in the military service of Rome? If he was commanded to kill Christians that rebelled against Rome for example would he have refused?
Somewhere, somehow, something, is missed in this discussion. Who’s side is God on when it comes to such killing and why?
Romans 13: 1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Governments are ordained by God. They are permitted to exist in order to maintain peace in the world until the Kingdom of God replaces them. We are here told to be in subjection to them. Cornelius was obligated to be in subjection to them. When such Governments step out of line other Governments are empowered to resist them and restore order once again. Killing is a part of this process and is not viewed as bad the way many do here.
Then again we have another view given by Paul which went like this: Col 1: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
Christ is the head of such governments and they consist by him. The reasons for this is the same as the ones given above. Killing should it become necessary to prevent our being overrun by evil will not result in the loss of our salvation as some may think. Then we also have our Lord’s personal view which was: 36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment. 38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That is enough," he replied." When these swords were used improperly our Lord resolved the problem but did not cast out the one that abused them. They would now be essential to the Faith which has an obligation to support such higher powers in this endeavor.
