I thought I would just go to sleep and not wake up. The idea of cleaning up the earth just didn't seem real. But now I'm open to the idea of heaven.

Mind Control
by brotherdan inso i've been reading stephen hassan's book on mind control and he made an interesting point that made me think about myself.
he asks the question, "what makes some people just walk out of cults on their own, while others require much harsher measures from others to get them out?".
most of you know that i was thoroughly indoctrinated as a jw.

I agree that having friends outside the org was key for me too. I had great friends at school who weren't dysfunctional like my witness friends. And all my relatives are not JWs, so I saw they were good people and they loved me unconditionally. It was a contrast to the lack of love at the meetings.
Another key for me is I'm a skeptical person, so I questioned the origins of the JWs since I was a teen. It just didn't sit right. Why would God start up a religion in America at the turn of the century? Once they changed their generation teaching AGAIN, I knew something wasn't right.
Like you brotherDan, I also believed the GB was God's representative and we needed to listen and obey everything they said. Once I realized that was false, I couldn't understand why my family would stay in the religion knowing that the GB wasn't God's representative! It's gotta be mind control.

Reply to Judicial Committee question @thenoblelodge
by SweetBabyCheezits inme: right now, i'm less than 48hrs away from a jc hearing in which i will likely be df'd for apostasy.. .
tnb: do you feel the wtbts has any power or hold on you, if not why attend a jc.
you don't have to attend, unless of course you have information you want to point out to them.

I wish you all the best. Maybe your friends will think it's stupid to get DF'd for asking questions...that sounds like a cult to me.

I agree with Open mind...just say no to baptism!
One of my friends didn't get baptized, and 10 years later her JW family, including the PO, was at her "wordly" wedding.

Anyone get divorced because of differing beliefs?
by NiceDream inlately my husband has been miserable, but isn't talking.
he is really upset that he is "stuck with me" now that he knows i question my beliefs.
i thought we could explore the bible together and i hoped he would come to the same conclusion as me, but he won't do that.

My heart goes out to all of you enduring this tough situation, and to those who have been through it already.
My husband recently told me he 'chooses his family,' so hopefully we'll be able to build up our relationship again and move on from here.

The WT equates it with "Harvest Festivals." Here's other reasons from a 76 Awake:
"Today a growing cry is heard against Thanksgiving Day practices. Many feel that current attitudes and customs make it a mockery to call it a “Day of Thanks.” Why so?
In much of the United States, Thanksgiving Day is the beginning of the Christmas season—a ‘holiday period’ extending through New Year’s Day, January 1. So Thanksgiving (now the fourth Thursday in November) becomes the signal for the commercial world to press for what is called the ‘buying binge.’
Further, for many the day is becoming one for ‘saturating’ the public with sports events. The National Observer told of a man who insisted that his wife quickly feed him during the “half-time” break in the football game. “So after the poor woman had worked many hours preparing the turkey and trimmings, the husband said grace, ate his dinner, and was back in front of the television set—in nine minutes.”
While this is an extreme case, the increasing emphasis on sports and commercialistic parades has led more and more people away from any attitude of thankfulness. But how has the “secularizing” of the day, as it is politely called, come about?
Of course, for many the holiday is still a time of family reunion. And there remain those who sincerely view this day as one of thanksgiving to God. But with the rising tide of sports, the frequent gluttony and drunkenness, the trend definitely is in another direction. For a growing majority, having a special meal is the extent of “celebrating” Thanksgiving...
So on November 25, the declared “day of thanks” in 1976, personal decisions need to be made. Dedicated Christians certainly will not want to convey to others the idea that they believe in one-day-a-year gratitude. Really, should not all who profess Christianity encourage a spontaneous spirit of thanksgiving—from the heart—the year around?"
This argument doesn't work as well with Canadians because they celebrate Thanksgiving in October, which isn't the beginning of the Christmas season.

by kurtbethel inhere is an audio clip from a study where the witnesses are handing out a watchtower and awake, and promoting their benefit.
then the householder asks about the "koolaid edition".

Wow! I can't believe they said the new magazine makes it simpler for people without "deeper knowledge" to read so they don't have to ask questions about what a certain word means and waste paper explaining! Puh-lease!!! Who makes this crap up? At least the old Watchtowers backed up most of their "points" with a scripture unlike the Kool-aid edition.
