That's your stupid definition of faith. We have two adopted cats. I don't like you.
This is quite possibly the best response I've ever elicited on JWN.
i now find it idiotic that i could ever beleive the bible to be the inspired word of god.....,throughout the bible "god"has only dealt with a few of his favoured spokespersons to deliver his messages to a minority populace.individuals at first,..... then, patriarchs, nomads,a small nation, ignoring all other nations that had sprung up.......,abandoning his chosen nation, sending his "son"to a small nation, only giving them his pearls of wisdom, much of what was not even recorded for prosperity and remember he never wrote a word,it was left up to other imperfect humans to record what he was supposed to have said, just a smidgen......,again ignoring the bulk of humankind keeping them in ignorance of his plan for universal salvation, leaving it all up to imperfect humans to spread this message of salvation, whom he has already condemned for their sinfullness and disobedience.i just find it so unbeleivable.
in the 6000 years of recorded history only a fraction of the earths population, maybe less than a third have ever heard of the god of the bible, or his so called plan to redeem humankind ,thats millions and millions of people.
( india,arabic,afghanistan,pakistan etc.etc.).

Wow, that's a great nugget of wisdom, LWT. Nice find.
Coincidentally, I've got a new co-worker who just moved in across the hall from me and he is uber-fundamentalist, but also very eccentric. He started talking religion last week and told me, "God talks to me and I do whatever he tells me.... Some people call that dangerous but you recall the faith of Abraham?"
I kid you not, that man really makes me nervous. I'm pretty open for religious debate but not with this guy. I'm so afraid he would answer in the affirmative and then have a dream about doing it, mistaking it as a message from god, that I don't wanna ask.

Joliette: Faith is not thinking. Its not logical.
N.drew: In my opinion if what you say is true then all Science would be failure.
N.drew:Faith is needed for experimentation. Look again at the second aspect of faith (assurance of things we cannot see). We can not see the END of an experiment can we? But we TRUST there will be an end, do we not? If we do not, then why experiment in the first place?
N.drew, how many cats do you own? Excuse me, how many cats do you keep?
An educated guess is not the same thing as faith. If you have faith (of the religious variety) that x is greater than y and you draw up a hypothesis and perform an experiment that proves y is greater than x, faith would cause you to ignore the results and continue to assert that x is still greater than y, regardless. You instead might insist that the data was faulty or that we cannot possibly understand it, and that you "just know" your hypothesis is right, therefore it is.
In science, you follow the evidence, no matter how uncomfortable that may be to your personal beliefs. Are you prepared to relinquish your hypothesis (faith) if the evidence doesn't support it?
Science does require imagination, though, and that's one aspect it shares with faith. Although in science, imagination is used to dream up ideas which are then tested, whereas in religion imagination is used to dream up ideas which are then believed.
i'm down here in alabama and the air feels eerie.
the sun just popped out for a minute.
my cats are spooked.
Stay safe out there.
Looks like Kentucky has a bull's eye painted on it for strong supercells today:
*** OUTBREAK OF STRONG TORNADOES AND DAMAGING WINDS LIKELY TODAY OVER A LARGE AREA *** ...SRN IL...IND...OH...KY...NRN TN... STORMS ARE CURRENTLY INTENSIFYING OVER IL AND SERN MO NEAR THE LOW AND ALONG THE DEVELOPING COLD FRONT. MEANWHILE...THE WARM FRONT HAS RAPIDLY LIFTED NWD OVER THIS AREA...REPLACING COOL AIR WITH WARM AND UNSTABLE AIR. FURTHER WARMING WILL OCCUR EWD INTO OH LATER TODAY. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY FAVORABLE SETUP FOR TORNADIC SUPERCELLS AND DAMAGING WINDS...NEAR THE LOW TRACK...AHEAD OF THE UPPER VORTICITY CENTER AND NEAR THE RETREATING WARM FRONT. LOW LEVEL SHEAR WILL REMAIN STRONG...AS WILL FORCING. STORMS CURRENTLY OVER SERN MO/IL SHOULD THRIVE AS THEY MOVE ACROSS A WIDE AND DESTABILIZING WARM SECTOR. THIS SHOULD FAVOR LONG LIVED AND FAST MOVING TORNADIC SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. THE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO WANE LATE THIS EVENING NEAR THE ERN FRINGE OF THE MDT RISK AREA AS LOW LEVELS COOL. ...ERN TN...MS/AL/GA... TORNADIC SUPERCELLS ARE CURRENTLY ONGOING OVER NRN AL MOVING INTO ERN TN AND PERHAPS CLIPPING FAR NWRN GA. THESE CELLS FORMED IN AN AREA OF WARM ADVECTION...AND THE ENTIRE WARM SECTOR IS ALREADY UNCAPPED. THE MOST CONCENTRATED AREAS OF STORMS SHOULD BE LATER THIS AFTERNOON...ALONG AND EVEN AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT FROM LA INTO MS AND AGAIN AL AND TN. DEEP LIFT WILL EASILY SUSTAIN STORMS IN A VERY UNSTABLE ENVIRONMENT...AND LONG HODOGRAPHS WILL FAVOR SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF DAMAGING WINDS...LARGE HAIL...AND TORNADOES.
tonight i just got my certificate: i'm officially a member of my church and a baptist.
(i think of myself as just a general christian, but i like the laid-backishness of the baptists.
i definitely don't think one denomination is better than anyone else though, and my church is multi-cultural, so i'm not a hater of other races like some southern baptists).
Yan: Sweet Baby Cheezits <=> Southern Baptist Church
Gah! I gotta change my handle now. Thanks, Yan.
Kitty, it's not worth anything coming from an anonymous knucklehead like me but I can empathize with the desire for friendship and love in a group setting and, to be honest, it's something I miss from my own experience at the KH. (My wife and I left, not for a lack of love, but for a lack of truth. There seemed to be genuine love in our congregation but I know that's not the case everywhere.)
Anywho, to each his own and I wish you the best of luck. Also please pray for my soul to be granted one of the cooler corners of hell for being a sincere unbeliever.
this is a excellent video about the development complex neuro-circuits.
well worth watch all the way through.
i remember that along with the eye, synapses were often quoted as an example of irreducible complexity by jw's and other creationists, from 4:38 on this video there is a great explanation of why this is not so.
Marked. For loose conduct.
And so I'll remember to watch later.
since that great atheist heavy weight christopher hitchens left us.
it seems the british press have had their knifes out for richard dawkins.
mostly trying to discredit him and smear his name.. his exasperated "oh god!
Cofty: Again there is a big difference between a private discussion where it would be appropriate to be very sensitive to another's beliefs and a public forum where a creationist has chosen to make their "personal beliefs" public.
10-4. Over.

N.drew: Yan I suspect you are not thinking clearly.
Well, to be fair, maybe Yan just hasn't developed his communication branches, yet, Nance. The whole tree thing, y'know...
N.drew: I veiw communication like a tree.

JWFacts: It makes perfect sense if you want to be a leader of a new religion. You are not going to be very successful getting followers if God talks to everyone.
Well put, JWF.
i talk to jw's, i talk to many religious people.
i also spend all day everyday with educated people due to my career.
one thing stands out to me for sure, by far the majority of the regular posters here are intelligent and informed.
Shack & Nomad, I've got a a couple of Hi8 tapes somewhere out there labeled 2005 DC Drama. I'd convert and share them but I really can't risk an Oscar nomination right now.

You have no substantial argument to justify disbelief in the Bible, just because God doesn't deal with people according to YOUR imperfect, flawed thinking.
You have no substantial argument to justify belief in the Bible just because the scientific method doesn't give you the magical and immediate answers your imperfect, flawed thinking demands.
Someone needs a reality check,
In some primitive South American tribes, the natives would say that's "rich."
less time ranting on a forum,
Uh... okay, I concede to that.
and more time studying the Bible for what it actually is.
Talking snake whose species gets cursed after he's unwittingly used by an invisible puppetmaster... check
Talking donkey... check
Virgin conception... check
Man 'stops the sun' from moving... check
Another dude who gets strength from his Golidlocks... check
Another one who takes a Big Fish Spa vacation for three days and then writes his autobiography... check
I could go on but I think I've got a decent grasp on what the Bible actually is.
