reading idly through this magazine , i read the study article "rejoicing in our hope" which discusses the two "hopes" according to the wtbts ie heaven & earth.. a couple of points were of interest:.
(1) absolutely no mention at all of the 144,000 or rev 14. usually an article like this would be filled with references , but it isn't even mentioned.
it does discuss the "limited number" , but only in contrast with the "no man can number" great crowd.. (2) a much more laid back attitude towards the two hopes.
Do the math. 40k killed, how many lived? 144k was probably reached in the 1st century according to thier definition
Bingo. I asked a similar question years and years ago when I was still a believing Dub. I asked a friend who was an elder "Who exactly is keeping track of the number of annointed ones throughout the centuries?" I wasn't trying to be smart---I thought it was a reasonable answer. All I got for my efforts was a blank stare and a "let's go out for a beer" request.

Of course, they just can't frigging well wait to turn it into a opportunity to 'preach' more doom and gloom to the masses. There's absolutely NO sympathy whatsoever in that message.......just vague, non-specific 'warnings' reminisent of Lot's wife and of Matthew 24.......what a bunch of heartless morons.....

No, no, no.....the bestest one is the one about the sister (I believe somewhere in NY), who had to work in Serve-Us alone that day. She called on some guy who had just murdered the Avon lady and when they caught him they asked him why he didn't kill this Witness woman. His answer was that there were "two large men" on either side of her. Since she was working by herself, it was said that Jehover's angels were sent to protect her from this serial murderer.
No names, no specific dates or location and no link to this guy's trial but don't you dare question any of it!

i recall a post and some discussion earlier on this site about the john denver rumor.
the rumor of him at one of his concerts asking all jw's to leave.
I did a bit of digging into the John Denver urban legend and discovered something quite different from the official version. Apparently what really happened was that some Witnesses were at a John Denver concert many years ago and he was going to be doing some patriotic songs during the concert. He knew that at the time, his concerts were attended by Witnesses and he kindly suggested that, rather than them being offended by what he was playing, he gave them the option to leave and get fully refunded.
Of course, this spread like wild-fire in Dub-dumb land and before you could say 'Jehovah', the story was that John Denver was obviously in contact with Satan and he could 'feel the presence' of Jehover's peoples and ordered them to leave.
Naturally this was never questioned by any Dubs. The other ridiculous story of John Denver supposedly admitting to Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, that he hated Witnesses and Johnny Carson ordering him off the stage, has never been proved. There's no clip from the Tonight Show that has ever been produced showing this---it's just another stupid, ridiculous piece of the Urban Legends that Witnesses seem to thrive on.

throw in a few "end-times" dates, and let the whole mix simmer, occasionally adding a few suckers - er, followers, until the end time runs out - er, the timer runs out..... let him stew in his own juices, exposing him to a hot kitchen warmer as the embarrassment of his false predictions puts heat on him.... then bake in an oven of heated public opinion, due to his scandalous behavior towards an underage girl and his very public divorce.. serve with half-truths and contradictions.... next up - baked rutherford steeped in whiskey - gin - wine - beer - and whatever else you've got, that's alcoholic!!.
