  within a few weeks i leased a condo on the banks of the willamette river just out side the city of portland.

  as she got into her car she looked at me funny again, laughed and just shook her head.. .

  i told him that if i said i was sorry, i knew that is what they wanted to hear but it was not the truth.

  A Secret about DF'ing that Elders will not tell you.

  one of the big issues affecting ex-jws is being shunned by their close relatives.

  this can be especially painful for parents, children or siblings.

  the jw relative may even make some exceptions to associate in the name of "necessary" business, but then later on their conscience "pricks" them, and they realize that they have pushed the envelope too much and they withdraw their association altogether ... or ... the society comes out with some article or the co comes to town, and manage to ding on some issue that make jws feel guilty about associating with df'd and da'd relatives.

  My brother, a long-time elder and now a circuit overseer, stopped associating with me almost 20 years ago. I've never been disfellowshipped or reproved; neither have I diassociated myself. His reasoning is that I'm an apostate because I left the religion (and therefore god, in his mind) and because I don't believe the JW teachings. I tried to reason with him about the fact that I got baptized as a minor, and that if I'd known then what I know now, I never would have been baptized. It doesn't matter to him. I left the religion; I'm an apostate. Very black and white. He's convinced my sister to take the same stand.

  The funny thing is that he made this decision long before I married Alan, the arch-apostate. Now he's really scared to death of me!

  Ever feel like you just wanna chuck it all in.....?

  ok i'm whinging here, but have you ever felt that way about your job/career?

  take today, i'm supposed to be on pa (holiday) from my job, but got called in this morning, turned up on my ward, and ended up staying all day to support the nurses in the team.

  we had 3 cardiac arrests, 1 psychotic patient who was threatening to stab someone, and the usual abusive relatives, who can't seem to see beyond themselves and what they expect.

  Scooby, want to trade jobs?

  I got my degree in technical/specialized journalism and have worked in marcom/publishing for the last 15 years or so. I've had regrets for the last five years or so that I didn't train in nursing, which I think was really my calling. And I'm so incredibly bored with my job. I edit the most mind-numbing technical articles, some of them so badly written it's pathetic.

  I'm half joking about trading jobs, of course. Yes, I'm really fed up with my job, too, for some of the same reasons (layoffs, short staffed, stupid management moves, etc.) but you're dealing with life-and-death matters, while I just deal with words and bad authors and deadlines. Your situation puts my job dissatisfaction into perspective.

  I've thought a lot about changing careers, too. They always say that your skills "transfer" to other areas. But in these times of high unemployment and scarce jobs, I'm not sure such a career move is possible right now. It's frustrating, isn't it? I agree with you about the management side of the job, though. I've managed staff, and I'm much happier now being a peon and having to worry only about myself. Maybe you should give up the management position and go back to being staff. That would alleviate at least part of the stress.

  In the meantime, soaking up the sun in Greece sounds like a good short-term solution. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

  When I was about 8 years old, my best friend and I were working together door to door. Someone shot at us. I was too young to know what kind of gun it was (my guess now is it was a pellet gun of some sort), but I felt the projectile whiz right past my face. It misses me by inches. Another time, when I was 10 years old, I was going door to door with an elderly brother (we were in unassigned territory). At one door, the man who answered the door was really angry and started shouting at us. The brother answered him very calmly and said that we would leave, but as we turned to walk away, the householder ran out of the house and kicked the elderly brother in the ass, sending him tumbling down about a dozen stairs. After he stumbled to his feet and we started down the sidewalk toward the car, the man ran after us, yelling at us not to go to any other houses in the town. We got to the car and drove to the sheriff's office to file a report. When the sheriff went back to the man's house, he had cleared out. We left and went back home, where we belonged.

  My dad got attacked by two dogs once. He used his big leather briefcase to protect his legs; it was shredded and his literature was strewn all over the street.

  My mom had a householder say, "Just a minute," when she offered the magazines. My mom thought the woman was going to get change, but when she came back to the door, she had a gun in her hand, which she pointed at my mom.

  My sister had a bird poop in her hair one time when we were working door to door. That was probably the worst experience of all, because she was about 15 and had long beautiful hair. I remember using handbills to try to get it out of her hair.

  I agree wholeheartedly with Big Tex. I find this whole discussion of what Ray Franz should and shouldn't do appalling. Ray is an old man, and he's already dedicated the past 20 or so years of his life to helping people. He responds to everyone who writes him, no matter how long it takes. He talks to people for hours on the phone. He invites people into his home. Who can even estimate how many hours he's spending writing, updating, and translating his books, which I think have helped more people than any other single information source? It's insulting to suggest that he owes anyone anything. Let the man pick his own battles, for christ's sake. Hasn't he done enough?

  I have to say that I run into a less complicated version of this attitude in my life. My husband has spent the last 10 years (at least) of his life, almost every waking minute that he wasn't at work, helping people--researching and writing long articles, writing posts and email, talking for countless long hours on the phone. It gets tiring, believe me, not just for him but also for his family. I can't imagine how Ray and Cynthia deal with it; the demands on their time must be a million times worse than what Alan and I deal with. I think we should all just be grateful for all Ray has done and leave it there. Just because he was a member of the governing body many years ago doesn't mean he has an obligation to get involved in every issue. And, personally, I don't blame him a bit for not wanting to get involved with Bill, given the things Bill has done to alienate even some of his most ardent supporters. And before you jump on me for this statement, let me say that Alan has done as much or more to support and help BIll than anyone--not just in terms of time and effort, but also financially.

  Portland/Vancouver Fest! Pics soon to follow :)

  well, we had a grand old time yesterday dakota red kindly offered his home for our mini-fest, and what started off as a little party for searcher (our uk guest of honor) became somewhat more than that .

  in alphabetical order, our group included: bikerchic, blueyes, bruce and dorian baker, buster and wifey, carmel, dakota red, goshawk, lost diamond, onacruse, princess and steve (and steve's mom and a family friend), searcher, seven006, songmistress, and veniceit.. carmel brought some delicious salmon for the barbie, and we even got searcher to have a taste.

  we overlooked the fact that brits prefer to eat fish in the form of fish and chips searcher and songmistress--when we brought out the cake, everything was fine until somebody started to sing happy birthday...the words just sorta stuck in our throats, and we looked around at each other like a bunch of dubbies lolololol.

  StinkyPantz, if I got worried everytime Alan talked to a woman from this board, I'd be one hell of a mess. Instead, I tease Alan all the time about his many admirers. Sure, they get to talk to him on the phone and admire him, but I get to be married to him!

  Farkel, I'd love to take credit for Julie's musical talent, but since she's my stepdaughter, not my real daughter, I can't quite go that far. However, both of my boys are incredibly talented, too. Maybe I'll take just a little bit of credit for them.

  ... i would say that we have seen chemical weapons tests in syria over the past 12, 15 months, rumsfeld said, without giving details.

  we have intelligence that shows that syria has allowed syrians and others to come across the border into iraq, people armed and people carrying leaflets indicating that theyll be rewarded if they kill americans and members of the coalition.. syria has long been on a u.s. list of states suspected of supporting terrorism...... you can find more here:.

  Some of you folks are forgetting one important fact: Bush in incapable of coherent thought, therefore it's impossible for him to mean what he says. He's a puppet for Cheney and Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. This war in Iraq has nothing to do with WMD or even Saddam. Many years ago, the Project for the New Amercan Century--to which Rummy and Cheney and their ilk belong--publicly stated on their web site their goal of taking over the Middle East and then moving on to countries like China. Yes, China. Iraq is just the easiest and first target. PNAC picked someone with name recognition--someone ignorant and pliable and arrogant--then raised the money and got him elected. And now he plays his puppet role like a good little boy.

  Read up on PNAC if you really want to be scared. They've taken some of the more controversial papers off their web site, but there's still some juicy material there. Then do a Web seach for PNAC, Wolfowitz, and Rumsfeld and read some of the articles that the international press has published about them, especially the British press.

  I'm afraid that this country is in for a long series of invasions (you can't call these things "wars"). In the meantime, education, social services, healthcare, social security, medicare--all the things the people of this country desperate need--will be sacrificed to pay for the ambitions of the PNAC gang and their buddies, who will be rewarded with lucrative rebuilding contracts after we go in and bomb the hell out of one country after another.

  I'm extremely discouraged about the state this country is in and where we're headed.

  but the reasons battle is now at hand have nothing to do with sept. 11, 2001, even though president bush, in pressing his case for an attack, mentioned the terrorists' attacks several times during his march 6 news conference.
