Hi Stephanus--

I am unaware of any major US news agency that does much coverage of the globe because you know we Americans don't really care anyway. Only if it directly relates to us, otherwise we are busy being lazy, materialistic and self-centered. What do we care about what goes on "over there"? (Some do but most don't)

I must say I haven't noticed a lot of sensationalism on CNN compared to the tabloid nonsense known as Fox. I will see a story reported on CNN and I'll see a party from each side speak. The anchor doesn't argue with either and when the segment is done I couldn't tell you the personal views of the anchor, only what the guests had to say really. Yet on Fox (who BTW I notice is staffed primarily with second-raters who got fired off the 5am shows elsewhere) always argue with the guest that represents the left and there is never ANY doubt which side the "anchor" *wink-wink* is on.

Of course it is my opinion that the fairest moderator isn't on either, I am speaking of Chris Matthews. Let's Play Hardball! And he does, with both sides!

Not fooled by that Fair & Balanced Mantra (me thinks they do protest too much)--

he was df'd nearly 10yrs ago for basically disagreeing with everything the soc.

The Role of Afterlife in Suicide Terror Attacks

i just read a very interesting article in slate magazine, at http://slate.msn.com/dispatches/01-10-05/dispatches.asp.

it discusses the role the glorious descriptions of the afterlife in islam can have in motivating people to commit such atrocities as what happened on sept 11. it is interesting to note that only a minority, extremist view of islam encourages suicide terrorist attacks.

it is also interesting, and scary, to note which type of people are exposed to such propaganda.. .

Hi Jan,

Alas, the promise of a glorious afterlife is nothing new as you well know. There are always some desperate souls willing to buy such a line of crap.

While Richard was on Crusade there were tales of the Old Man on the Mountain. He had a garden in his mountain compound filled with all things beautiful, including women. He would bring in some of his men to enjoy the garden and then tell them this was the afterlife that awaited them. To prove his men's loyalty to visitors he would often gesture to a look-out perched on the garden wall to jump to his death. It is reported these men did so gleefully. Poor fools.

We can only hope fundamentalists from other religions don't start their own version of jihad because I fear there would be no shortage of eager enlistments.

jon gave me his password a few weeks ago and asked me to post to the board if something happened to him.

as some of you know jon had been undergoing cancer treatment since the end of july.

the us launched an air strike on key cities in afghanistan around 12:45 est today.

president bush says that we are specifcally targeting taliban military installations, and terrorist training camps.

may god be with us all.. .

Logical,

I understand your aversion to violence. God has nothing to do with any of this horror that goes on in the world, it's just us. The thing of it is though dear is that if one doesn't react to such attacks as the US has recently suffered then they jsut continue. I mean think of the times nations would have been taken over if they hadn't fought back. While the US is hardly an innocent lamb in world affairs we should be glad to see the government's awareness of the World's view of us is improved. Much effort has been made to carefully target military installations only and you can bet there aren't innocent women and children there.

You insist on proof but very little of it can be published without giving away sources. When you are dealing with slimey specimens like the Taliban and bin Ladin you must realize youcan present all the proof you want they will dismiss it and/or decree it is fake. It is a cold cruel world and if a nation wants to survive, much less thrive, such things must be addressed in severe ways. Don't waste your tears on those Taliban lunatics, instead weep for the 15,000 kids who are now missing a parent.

Hi Beroea,

I figured English wasn't your primary language. I have to ask you to understand that most Americans automatically assume English to be everyone's native tongue and are critical of those who don't "do it" well. We would all do well to remember we are talking to people from all over the planet and many have to learn English as a second language in order to participate. I am sure I needn't point out how difficult English is as no one slaughters it like us Americans. So Beroea, I apologize on behalf of any who criticized your style, spelling, grammer or whatever.

I just do not understand........

maybe it's just me but, why is it that "christians" seem to be the most judgmental, unforgiving, hard hearted people?.

all my life for some reason or other, i have believed in god and jesus, but throughout history, and even in our time.

the cruelest acts have been done in the name of god.. i see "christians" claim they have love of their fellow man, but their actions (and words) are to the contrary.
