The watchtower and hitler?
by crankytoe ini remember reading somewhere that jehovah'w witnesses tried to somehow make friends with hitler during the holocaust, .
is this true?
cause this past weekend, my biblestudy conductor brought this elder over who kept talking about "our brave brothers who lost their lives in the holocaust" as part of his faith without works/go to the kh speech.

Yes, in fact it was only when the Society decided that it should object to saluting the American flag in 1935 that Witnesses worldwide were told to refuse to salute flags or stand for national anthems. The consequences in Germany were horrendous. Witnesses were thrown into the first concentration camps for refusing to 'Heil Hitler'. (Penton, 'Jehovah's Witnesses & the Secular State', Journal of Church & State, 21, 1979)
Best book for this information is Christine King, 'The Nazi State & the New Religions', Edwin Mellen Press, NY, 1982.
The Declaration of Facts the Witnesses sent to Hitler in 1933/4? is also reprinted in their Yearbook of 1934/5? available on cd. Indisputable.

Yes Es, I'm hearing you. I was talking with my hubby about travelling overseas & his cynicism shocked me, especially since he's travelled around Australia. I can't wait to travel, & I'm hoping that the experience will knock the cynicism out of him!
You've got to go with your gut though. My hubby was very stingy when we were going out (both uni students) but my gut said he wouldn't always be like that, & he isn't!

To loot, or not to loot-is the point moot?
by CaptainSchmideo inokay, let's say you find yourself in the big easy.
no lights, no phone, no motorcar, not a single luxury.. you have kids, you have yourself.
everyone is hungry, and thirsty, and drinking the water will kill you (even walking around in it isn't real safe.).

I think the 'looting' going on is a bit of a beat-up. The pictures I saw showed people walking slowly through shops, gathering supplies, while the police watched. Surely that is only humane? Definitely not like the tv scenario of LA riots.

Thanks guys, some great advice there! I definitely need to keep breathing!
I still hadn't heard anything so I just called & he said, that's okay, you're casual, but I'm taking the opportunity to review the work situation, & to call back tomorrow afternoon. Since I last worked there properly a couple of years ago, 3 women now do the job I did (float secretary), & there really isn't enough work for me, so I'm not hopeful ... oh well, guess it gives me a chance to concentrate on the sprog & on applications ... Win-win, right?!

Is this swearing, to a JW?
by wordlywife insaying "jesus" or "judas priest", as when watching a football game and a call or play is bad?
my jw husband does this frequently.. .
would this be considered swearing by the average witness?.
-
JW83
Here's a hint: if you swear in a different accent, or if you are already British, it doesn't sound as bad!
Example, I have a NZ friend who always says she's 'pussed'

My daughter has a teddy bear called 'Shizer'
'Bloody' was sort-of allowed in casual conversation when I was a dub, being Aussies & giggly young girls!
I've always sworn like a trooper in private though. It took me a lot longer to get over not being able to stick my finger up at someone, I physically could not do it for years (I know some people would say it's not exactly an attractive skill!) Now I do it frequently & with ease ...

It isn't really a change of heart - both decisions are wrong, & I just have to decide which one is more wrong!!! Does that make sense?! The grim reality of living without earning money is just awful ... Of course I thought of that before I left, but now it's here it's awful ...
I haven't heard back - they are very forgiving at that place, but who knows? There really wasn't the work there for me anyway, although the boss didn't realise ... I just need it for another 6 months.
I'm up the proverbial creek either way!
Thanks for letting my vent, forum! :)
