  Advice needed about my study with a JW.

  i've never been a jw, and i'm having a difficult time trying to understand the perspective of a born-in jw.

  i want to ask questions that will cause this family member to began to think outside the box, but i don't want to trip off any apostate alarms and have him put his guard up.

  i also don't want to waste time and energy asking questions that he can easily brush off and give the prepackaged watchtower answer without having to really think.

  According to JW dogma, they believe God has continuously had "an organization", even during the Dark Ages. Until the death of Jesus, it was the Jews. Then, until 1919 it was the churches. Now, it's JWs. Of course, this is utter crap, just like the Catholic Church's claim to be able to trace Popes all the way back to Peter. Similarly, if you ask a Catholic about it, they'll become indignant and insists they can, but Catholics are the only ones who believe it, just like JWs are the only ones who believe in the whole "organization" thing.

  It's just a way to enforce their idea of what the "faithful and discreet slave" of Mat 24 means. They teach there was a "governing body" in the 1st Century and this is crap, too. They teach the "faithful and discreet slave" was chosen by Jesus in 1919 and were put in charge of Christianity; wrong on both counts.

  Study doctrine with JWs but don't get caught up in their worship of the printing company, the Governing Body, or "the organization"; it's all idolatry. Do all things to the glory of God and not men or a man-made group or company. They'll start guilt-tripping you with "Who taught you the Truth tm ?" and expect you to understand they are your masters. Simply respond "God", because His Word is the source and the JWs are just messengers; "good-for-nothing slaves" (Luke 17:10) and not gods, lords, leaders, or objects to be worshiped or obeyed.

  Be careful when studying with JWs, because that's where their "Bible" study leads. Many things in their books are very biased toward the unbeliever eventually worshiping the Governing Body, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, and the Jehovah's Witnesses group as a whole. Keep an eye out for this and don't let it fool you. It is God alone you must worship (Mat 4:10).

  Jesus said to them: “The children of this system of things marry and are given in marriage, but those who have been counted worthy of gaining that system of things and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. In fact, neither can they die anymore, for they are like the angels, and they are God’s children by being children of the resurrection. - Luke 20:34-36

  Luke's version makes more sense. Notice he says "those who have been counted worthy of gaining that system of things and the resurrection from the dead", leading me to believe everybody there will be unmarried. Also notice the "they are like the angels" part has to do with eternal life, not sex or marriage.

  Massive orgy! No jealousy, no STDs, no unwanted children. Just one big happy human family sharing the communal load (no pun intended).

  Oh, and God created marijuana, coca, poppies, etc. for a reason. I think the hippies had it closest with their lifestyle. Only problem is, imperfection, drugs, and unrestrained sex don't mix. There were only 2 rules in Eden and neither were about adultery or fornication.

  Just a few questions...anyone got answers?

  i was a born in, spent 22 years of my life inside it.

  i still don't know what the "1975" thing is everyone is talking about, is the change over from one man making all the decisions to a group, for the jw?..next...where does all the information everybody has come from?

  Some of the most damning information about 1975 comes from Awake! magazines in the late '60s. If you look on your Watchtower Library CD-ROM, you'll notice Awake! only goes back to 1970, while Watchtower goes back to 1950. Changes to the "Truth" book attempt to hide things said about 1975, too. But there are still many things on the CD-ROM about 1975 you can look up for yourself. Here's a good resource for finding some.

  but i'll avoid it almost always..... if i'm talking with you,.

  on the rare occasions that i am in conversation with any jdub family,.

  They did; they're just waiting for the Great Tribulation, when government power crumbles, to use it with impunity. DFing, "marking", "public reproof", back-room mock trials, etc. are all the precursors. When the governments stopped supporting the Catholic Church in their Inquisitions and actually stood in the way, they stopped. The Salem witch trials are an indication of what happens without a stable government to intercede on behalf of the individual. You can look at what goes in the Middle East for a snapshot of things to come, from "God's organization".

  as you know, i'm embroiled in a family and internet debate/dialogue w/jws the last few days.

  and you all have been helping get great points in.

  the text that i'm about to post come from a jw apologist who has acknowledge some of my comments about jws being a cult and that no tolerance for questioning them is one of the signs of a cult.

  Of course most churches won't adopt a neutral stance on doctrinal differences. If they did, there would only be one church. That would violate Jesus' and Paul's warning of the current sectarianism. Mutual respect for differences in understanding stopped shortly after the 1st Century and the church became totalitarian. They were so opposed to diversity of thought, they banned the Bible being read by anyone but the clergy class, so no opinion could exist other than the one given by the Church.

  The very fact that Arius and Athanasius coexisted in the same religion indicates a time when differing views were allowed. Sure, there was animated discussion that included many harsh words and ridicule, but it wasn't until later belief in anything other than set orthodoxy would get one excommunicated, imprisoned, tortured, and killed. Most denominations suffer no overt dissent and many have witch hunts to quash even silent dissent and ensure conformity.

  Jesus' issues with the Pharisees didn't stem from doctrine, but attitude. The days of "he that is not against us is for us" (Mark 9:40) are over and human authority has usurped Jesus' position as head of the congregation. The fact that JWs tolerate this authoritarianism betrays them not having the mind of Christ. They contribute to the fragmenting of Christianity. At least people like Martin Luther tried to hold things together from within, attempting to reason with his Christian brothers. It wasn't until his intolerant "brothers" threw him out that he started his own church.

  i'm an active jehovah's witness.

  i've obviously lost my faith, that's why i don't feel bad posting here anymore.

  i'd probably be disfellowshipped as a division causing, teaching, apostate, faster than you can say "maher-shalal-hash-baz" (isaiah 8:1), should it be found out that i was posting here and did not repent of the things i've said and stop participating in this forum.

  The reason the Society fears the Internet is because you can go alone. All day, in the ministry, we encounter "apostates". Every person who attends a church is an entry-level apostate. You'd never see a Witness run from a house if he were to encounter a church pastor, but a church leader should be an uber-apostate. The thing is, when we preach, we're not usually alone. Some back-stabbing, judgmental false brother/sister is with us, watching our every move, just hoping for a chance at glory by turning us in to the elders. JWs police each other; the prisoners are their own guards and every JW knows better than to trust any other JW, because the collective is truly their god.

  The rank and file are the SS to the Nazi party of the Society, with the Governing Body making up a compound Hitler. Just like the Nazis, everything is about the movement, the group, the party. A hierarchy power structure and appointing every member as a spy scares all the members into lock-step conformity with the collective. The Internet allows for an anonymous underground counter culture.

  The Society doesn't have the means or permission to wire tap or you'd better believe they would. They have the only people they can on very short leashes: Bethelites. They really wish everybody was under that kind of control: Dress codes, haircuts every 3 weeks for men, up at 5am for a day where every minute is decided for you. That's the world the Society wants, not an electronic free-for-all of individuality.

  Logic problem set by school for my 6 year old

  input welcome:.

  3 children collect 4 different shells on the beach.

  (4 shells in total, not 4 shells per child) each child has a bucket.

  The only conceivable answers are 81 and 4. Logic would dictate it's 4, judging by the age of the children. I think the teacher is just looking for an easy puzzle that can be done at home with some pennies and bowls, or something. I doubt he's expecting 1st-graders (I'm assuming, since it's 6-year-olds) to be doing powers. I'm also assuming the question is copied directly from the assignment and it was presented as

  How many different ways can the children take the shells home

  I'm thinking if the teacher wanted powers, instead of simply "ways", it would have included "combinations" or something indicating which shell in which bucket should be considered. For extra credit and to openly admit you helped, send the child with "4 ways, allowing 3 4 (or 81) possible shell/bucket combinations."

  I don't see anything in the question which would specify buckets while not specifying shells.

  what toys did you all ways want but couldnt have because you were a jw!

  i was lucky not to be born into the jw's, so i had pretty much every toy i wanted .... actionman (g.i joe) with all the guns, tanks wonderful 2nd world war uniforms, toy soldiers cavalry, indians, cowboys, knights,castles and forts.. six million dollar man, lone ranger and tonto, toy cars matchbox captin scarlett, thunder birds, loads of guns to run around playing war.. great days.

  (of course my sisters had dolls and prams, barbies cindys, play make up).

  i know having spoken to jws born into it certain toys were of limits for some kids.. a good friend told me how he loved action man and played with them constantly, until one day he came home and saw them all by the door in a. card board box.. when he asked his mum what she was doing.. she told him "do you really think jehovah wants you to play war, you can keep one of them but he cant have any guns and fight people".
