Why do you believe that the 144,000 and the great crowd are not the same group?

Rec'd a letter from my Dad - need some advice...
by Fadeaway3pointer infader here - last meeting was in autumn 2005. lurker on this site and others.
not one to get all controversial.. typical situation, pretty much a born in and left the church at age 38 and never looked back.. i'm 53 now, parents getting older - late 70s but very active, dad is still an elder.. parents, in laws, brother and brother-in-law still uber active jws.. my family (wife and 2 adult children) out since 2005.. we have stayed close to our parents - we have treaded religion lightly and have had a pretty good relationship and have kept our personal lives and beliefs/opinions separated from them.
this was intentional - as we love them and do not want anything to cause shunning since they are getting older and want to be there for them and we respect their beliefs.. got this letter today.

My advice is that you accept your parent's decision and do not respond. Let them keep wondering about your reaction since you are supposed to be dead to them anyway.
Just wait until urgent family business requires your involvement and then show them what unconditional love looks like.
Meanwhile if you have faith continue to pray God's blessing on them to come to their senses.

My BPD Sister Passed Away
by babygirl30 ini have started this, then restarted it, and it still sucks to even write this out - but my younger sister passed away unexpectedly last saturday (on my birthday).
i am going through all the grieving emotions, but there is more to the story that i could never and would never talk about to anyone that didn't understand the jw rhetoric.
so...here i am.. my sister has had borderline personality disorder (bpd) for as long as i can remember.

Sorry for your loss and ongoing struggle with your feelings. It may help to remind yourself that it was not your fault that you had virtually no relationship with your sister for the last ten years.
Feelings come and go; they are not necessarily what love is made of. If your sister were still alive and willing, would you still cherish the possibility of a having a good relationship with her? If so, that is love, whether you feel great emotion over her passing or not.

Yes...the religion of Jehovah's Witnesses is unique in that every doctrine that is unique to the religion is extra-biblical.

Russell's followers in British Columbia?
by dubstepped inso i was interviewing a guy for a podcast episode today and he went and saw his grandmother over christmas to gather some history.
he wasn't raised a jw but it turns out his family was actually opposed to the jws because they went all the way back to russell.
according to him (from her stories), they refused to follow rutherford and that's where the split took place.

The Faithful and Discreet Slave Just "have" The Truth
by Number 6 inin the late 80's when i was in my late teens i used to with my then wife to be attend a monday night pre-watchtower study at a local elders house.. this guy was revered as very knowledgable and he was scholarly and interesting to listen to; so at the time it was a genuinely enjoyable monday evening spent with oftentimes discussion would veer far of the subject at hand and lasting to well after 11pm some evenings.. this particular night, the subject up for discussion was "the faithful and discreet slave" and how we should be obeying them without question.
right in the middle of the study this elder said as a question not in the wt article; "how do we really know the current fds as lead by the governing body are the real deal.
i mean what actual proof do we have?".

Who else could it be?
Correct me if mistaken....in the late 1800s the FDS was the anointed since AD 33. Then from 1915 it was Charles Russell. In 1927 it was all the anointed again. In 2007 it was all the anointed since 1919. Then in 2012 it was the directors (leaders in Brooklyn) of the WTS in 1919 and all subsequent leaders acting in unison since 1919.
Apparently the FDS can be anyone the existing leadership of the WTS claims it to be.
Who else could it be?

Thanks Finkelstein
Excellent lesson in ancient history.
However i believe that what pagans did on any day back then has no bearing on my celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ today.
All the best to you and yours.

Merry Christmas everyone! Our entire family got together this morning to celebrate Christmas. I started by reading Luke 2, the shepherds story. I then said, "Jesus came to conquer the world... with the greatest weapon of all." I asked if anyone knew what that weapon was. Little Shanley, our 6 year old granddaughter, said she knew. "It's love", she responded. That just about made my day!Hope you all don't mind if I include here the third section of the Christmas message I gave to a group of Seniors a week ago. Here it is:"Christmas is a call to wonder to worship and to witness.
We are to be faithful to the Christmas call …. but there are some today who fail to answer the Christmas call. There's some even religious people who are Christians but refuse to celebrate Christmas. They actually think it is unchristian to celebrate his birth. They often say December 25th was originally celebrated by pagans.
But who cares what day pagans celebrated on or what they celebrated about. We don't care if the the devil himself claims a day. We can reclaim the day. Let's reclaim December 25th and every other day of the year. Let's reclaim the days of the week and the months of the year named after pagan deities. We can witness by celebrating the birth of Christ every day of the year to the glory of God.
And not only the birth of Christ. We can celebrate every event in the life of Christ. We can celebrate his birth, we can celebrate his holy and sinless life, we can celebrate his death, his resurrection from the dead, his ascension to the right hand of God where his glory was restored and our salvation secured. We celebrate his coming, we celebrate his miracles, his healings, his power over nature. We celebrate his power over sin and his victory over the devil...because that's our victory as well.
Christian believers have celebrated Christmas down the ages and we will continue celebrating Christmas till Jesus comes. We will never be ashamed to witness about his birth. We are not ashamed of the life of Christ, his grace, his power, his words, his works and the destiny his love has secured for us.
Let us continue to answer the Christmas call; to wonder at his love, worship him for it and witness his love to others. To God be the glory!"

Hey Pale Emperor,
Thanks for posting the link to the WT preparation for child custody cases booklet. Such weasel-word and outrightly disingenuous responses recommended should convince anyone who is not totally brainwashed that WT religion is immersed in deliberate deception.
