The Catholic Church hasn't disbanded because most people are able to ignore the stuff they disagree with. It's a much lower-pressure group.

Why do some expect the WTS to one day end? It's simply not going to happen folks........
by jambon1 inin my anger as an ex witness about 4 years ago i really wished that this would happen.
although the glaring errors, hypocrisy & downright badness of the wts was finally evident to me personally, others whom i had expeced to eventually leave the org have not.. i think it dawned on me around 1 or 2 years ago that my wife will never leave the witnesses.
having presented in both heated & reasonable debate every kind of logical argument against the religions teachings the conversations would get to the point where she would simply refuse to answer my questions.

I've never pissed one off, but I shut one down once.
I was in my dad's truck, and we had his dog, Jack, in the bed of the truck.
My dad was talking about how "we don't use independent thought."
Me: Dad, you know that when you refuse to use independent thought, you're willfuly rejecting the thing that Jehovah gave you to seperate you from the animals, and making yourself more and more like Jack, right? He didn't give you the ability to reason to mock you. He gave it to you to use.
Dad: -dead silence-

The Dawkins Delusion
by brotherdan inso, i recently finished reading "the god delusion" by richard dawkins.
i read it with a certain amount of hesitation.
after all, i am still recovering from my disappointment at realizing that the wts is not god's organization.

I have a question for the people who keep insisting that religions require faith - have any of you read anything by authors such as Aquinas or Nagarjuna, or anyone else who puts forward a wel-developed, well-reasoned defense of a religious system? You might disagree with them, but I don't see how it's reasonable to say that they require faith when they spend hundreds of pages supplying logical defenses of their beliefs.

New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures...
by Joliette inif i'm not mistaken, werent the committee of brothers who translated this bible: nathan knorr, albert scheoder, george gangas, fredrick franz.
wasnt fredrick franz the only scholarly person (or somewhat scholarly) person who was 'somewhat qualified' to translate any type of biblical greek, hebrew, etc?.

He was probably quite smart to avoid trying to translate it on the stand. ... Translators don't just crap out finished products that they publish. Any good translation takes time, and anyone who tried to translate something ad hoc like that would leave questionable areas in the translations, which the lawyers would tear apart.
Have any of y'all ever actually seen a good lawyer in action? They can trip up anyone more easily than you'd imagine.

'Unbiased' Study Bible or Commentary Recommendations?
by pirata inare there any commentaries or study bibles that anyone can recommend?
i'm not sure if it's possible to be 100% unbiased, but looking for something that tries to keep theological speculation, or scripture bending to fit theology, to a minumum.. esv study bible was referenced in another thread, but the description says it is "evangelical".
not sure if that indicates a theological bias or not..

The Jerusalem Bible is pretty good. When I took a history of early Christianity class, that's what we used (and my professor was apparently a disgruntled ex-catholic, so his choice of that bible seems to attest to its quality.)

Is it just me, or are the witnesses the ONLY group that use "demonized" to mean that something has taken on an association with demons? Like, "Those CDs are demonized." Just a random question I've been thinking about.
What do y'all think?

Crap my District Overseer says

The whole thing about the recession ending in 2009 is mostly meaningless. All it indicates is that the government has pumped enough money into the economy to nudge GDP back up at a Soviet-esque rate. If you're in Wall Street and got that money, yes, it's over. If you're not, then the NBER's statistical stuff is mostly meaningless.

Help me...
by rafreuter ini wish this weren't the way i greeted the board.
i've been lurking here for about 2 years now, but was unable to really interact because of limitations of my ipod browser (you can't post from there) and the parental controls on my computer.. .
well 2 years later, i'm a big boy, turned 18 and moved out.

Here's a quote that's been very important to me:
"Then the Buddha addressed all the monks once more, and these were the very last words he spoke:
'Behold, O monks, this is my last advice to you. All component things in the world are changeable. They are not lasting. Work hard to gain your own salvation.'"What I take from it is this - if you want freedom, you have to work for it. You don't get it for free. Remember what Jesus said "He who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God."
Same meaning for me - figure out what you need to do, and DON'T TURN BACK FOR ANYTHING, because if you do, you'll realize one day what you really lost when you lost sight of your goal, and that realization HURTS.
Bon courage!

Raf,
It's gonna be like groundhog day. Every day, you're gonna wake up and face the same little stings, the same self-alienations, tell the same lies if you want civility, and relive the same hurts. What's happening now will only happen once. If you go back, it will happen over and over again.

You can affect the universe. But it takes quite a bit more than thinking about bunnies.
