i found it somewhat odd and distracting to the flow of the talk at how much time was spent by all the jws looking up scriptures in the bible that they have all have read 1,000s of times before.

This is true : We had a 50'ish year old sister in our congregation who had memorized the Kings James Bible. She then could quote both the NWT and KJV versions verbatim. It was quite impressive. (not sure if that included all the "...begat..." in the OT but she could recite the passage in Luke of Jesus' forefathers.
I suspect she was a savant. She was pretty dim about other things.

My baptism vow at 11 years old kind of reminds me of when my seventeen year old wife signed a sales order for a $350.00 set of encylopedias from a door to door salesman while I was at work one day.

When a speaker would focus on a particular scripture to build his talk on, I would often look it up and read the surrounding verses to put it in context with what the speaker was getting at. Every once in a while I would find glaring missapplications of the featured text.
One of the more abused quotes was Peter saying, "but where will I go Lord?...only you have the sayings of...etc"
