  today's high school students in the usa:.

  less than 1/2 of them cannot identify the century when our civil war happened.. one in four thought columbus discovered america sometime after 1750.. one in three cannot name one right enumerated in the bill of rights.. three out of four cannot name the first us president.. two out of three do not know the length of term of a member of the house of representatives.. half cannot find britain on a map.. one out of four cannot find america on a map.. when my oldest daughter, who is now a physician was in 9th grade in this once-great state of california, i asked her about the three branches of our federal government.

  she was clueless and told me she would take civics in her junior year in high school.

  Resistance - I will ignore your clumsy age stereotyping because it is irrelevant.

  Sometimes, as in the instance with Farkel, anecdotal experience is matched by statistics that confirm it is typical to a large degree. Statistic are nothing more than a compilation of the factual.

  Why don't you find some evidence on your own to prove my statement incorrect. I stand by it. Do your own homework.

  Are you a unionized public teacher? Simple question that should not require any pesky research.

  If not, I am surprised that any informed person would not be aware that the pub. ed. system in this country is broken.

  Slim. - A well rounded education must include some knowledge of history and geography. Farkel has brought up several accepted facts (and one anecdotal example) showing a surprisingly limited scope of basic knowledge.

  Dateline - 8-02-13, WSJ - "Florida Education Commisioner resigns amid scandal" ( Mr. Tony Bennett.) "The departure follows an uproar over Florida's school grading system, which has undergone numerous alterations, angering public school officials and parents".

  He was ran from office by the State Teachers Union and their Democrat political lackeys because he was trying to bring grading standards, which have been watered down, back into reality and real world value.

  Other than your personal anectdote, do you have any evidence that the average high school student is less educated than in the past?

  Resistance - That's not 'anecdotal'. It is simple to check out the voracity of his statement by googling a few minutes on the subject.

  Todays public schools are passing high school kids with reading abilities near illiteracy.

  I believe they also dropped the 4 day lovefests to 3 or even two days?

  Used to be five days filling 50k seat ballparks.

  Off to tell the family...

  the day i've been waiting for is here.

  i'm flying home to see family and some old friends, most of whom are jw.

  since learning ttatt a few months back, i came to the decision i would have to tell my parents that we are no longer active and don't have any plans to return.

  If you are staying in their home during your visit it might get awkward if you drop the news on them as soon as you arrive. Know what I mean?

  Timing might be important if you don't have a plan B for coping with an instant shunning.

  Let us know how it goes. Hell, you might get them all out!

  Whiskey with Cigars

  i know a few folks here are huge cigar fans, i am asking if anyone can tell me a good whiskey to go with cigars.. i am sure this is kind of a broad question but i ma having some folks over for poker this weekend and i am trying to set things up real nice like... lol.

  i have the cigars ready - but i don't want to break out the cheap crown royal... any suggestions.

  There is something I enjoy about a good cigar and swirling a dark brandy in a snifter/ baloon glass. I always inhale a nice sniff of brandy before sipping.

  Good cigars should not be smoked casually like a cigarette, constantly burning in an ashtray.

  Don't overlook a nice rich cognac or brandy and maybe a few pieces of dark chocolate available.

  When I traveled in Canada I always brought back some Cuban cigars. I enjoyed them with brandy rather than Scotch (whiskey).

  when i got home from work this afternoon my wife was standing near the door looking at me and said you need to sit down i have some hard news to tell you.

  so i sat down and she began saying my brother called and i imminently ask if my mom had died.

  she said no but my mother told my brother a deep family secrect that no one knows about.

  You half sibling is about 45 yrs old. If you were to find him it would be a very intense conversation for the first few minutes. Then things would probably get either very strained and awkward or you might find out he is unemployed and needs help, etc.

  Unless you have room on your plate for more complications in your life at 60 yrs old. I would forget it.
