What I am most ashamed of.........

is not giving to charity while a jw.

this whole 'lets sit back and wait for jehovah to sort the world out while we do nothing' really gets to me.

there is so much to be done in this world, so many people doing good things but the jws just say bang on doors and sell watchtowers.. i did plenty of voluntary work in the jws pioneering my youth away but it was all so useless, now i do voluntary work to help people who want to be helped, as well as my job.

Yeah, Xanthippe, I remember Band Aid in the 80's. I felt really frustrated and sick to my stomach about not being able to contribute. It's like the mere act of trying to support that charity meant you didn't have confidence in Jah's imminent kingdom. I totally get you... when I think back, there's nothing I can do about my inaction, some of those poor souls might have lived had I donated my paper round money.

I very frequently feel guilt and self loathing for one reason or another. A nice scar left me by WTB$.

i am a new stepmom to an 8 year old boy whose mother is a jw pioneer.

my husband has been disfellowshipped for 2.5 years now.

i was part of the reason he left the organization for good, although he had stopped believing long before being kicked out.

What Ziddina said about science. I wish I had been exposed to proper science, and thinking for myself. I always had to do other stuff when evolution was taught in class. Yeah, being a friend, and especially impartial and not criticizing the JWs. Kids are so intuitive. Just by doing this you will be overdeveloping his innate bullshit-detector beyond his years.

At what age do people 'wake up'?

i was thinking about this question recently after being at the meeting when new pioneers were announced for the 2013 service year.. we have a dozen or so pioneers in the congregation, and most are in their 20's.

some absolutely love the things they are taught and can't wait to spread the good news.. others in the congregation are going through the motions, tired of hearing the same old same old but have no way to change things now.

then there are a couple like me.

I woke up about age 33. More-or-less born-in, that is, brainwashed from 5 yr old. For me to awaken, I needed about 3 intense years of really 'being in', zealously. I got lots of 'privileges', and got to experience the stinking underbelly of the beast. I'm not sure if being a brother, you become privy to more shit, and are more affected by cognitive dissonance. for this reason, I really do pity the sisters who live in their own la-la land, down lollipop lane... they only see what they are allowed to see.

from the hlc - not a letter from hq - why not?it is felt that because people don't know what to accept and what to say 'no' to, brothers and sisters are saying 'no' to everythying, and this is just wrong!they want brothers to know that not only is blood sacred, but also life is sacred.

the implication is, that if you say no to fractions, you could be viewing life as not sacred, and that if you do not have a good reason that you can explain, you should not say 'no' to things.

and they are no longer using the term "blood fractions" - they are to be called "blood derivatives", because the substance is so small.whatever happened to leviticus 17:13?

Like Coffee said, My dad got sick with cancer, and was greatly helped by a hospice charity. I let my JW mum know that i was supporting that particular charity by buying a years subscription to their weekly lottery. I could tell she was squirming inside. Here was I, doing something which would get me DF, but I was 'obviously' harming no-one with my actions, but helping. I've done numerous fundraising for charity, but honestly, that one little thing gave me a bigger buzz, knowing that in the process I'd got a dub thinking.

At first, when I got out, i went a bit crazy with fundraising...being pushed by guilt and self-loathing. Soon you'll end up like the rest of us and just feel good about yourself and life in general. It takes a little time...

i'll bet they didn't sign up for this kind of attention.. it reminds me of an article wired magazine did on youtube a couple years ago about people that had their careers or social life ruined by a viral youtube video.. anyway, it would be interesting to find out who these guys are and what may or may not end up happening with them over this..
