According to my understanding, materialism does allow for what believers would conceive of as divine or spirit, but it expects there to be a scientific explanation - if not now then in the future. (Also on htis understanding spirit is material too). So non belief in God for a materialist does not necessarily deny what we experience when we say we have had a religious experience - it is just that it is seen as a sense/aesthetic experience.

So me, of all people, had a religious experience
by sabastious ini was sitting in my garage, as i often do, to chill out and i actually ended up becoming angry.. so here i am, in my garage, kicking it on the stool for the drum set that is in there (i am a pianist/composer, not a drummer).
i start to think about all the crazy stuff that transpires on this planet.
we have all seen shows and heard stories or maybe even witnessed events that don't add up.

An update on the wife
by sooner7nc ini just wanted to let you all know that my wife is feeling great after receiving her kidney transplant last week.
her labs immediately started coming into line as soon as the organ was attached and as of now are almost completely normal.
she's obviously having a little pain and soreness from the huge incision they made but overall she's feeling wonderful.

What is it with all the men waking up but the wives stay in? Why is it the opposite for me?
by Cadellin inthis is something i've thought about for a while now.
it seems like the same story on this board over and over--the husband, who also might be an elder, ms, etc.--starts having doubts and researching, aka miseryloveselders and franklin massey and others.
he starts to smell the coffee and realizes that this organization isn't what it claims to be.

In our family the women have all woken up to the truth about the truth. The guys have not.
and in our extended family no guys have done so - 2 more women have left.

Blind Allegiance to G.B. supported by scripture?
by honorsthesis inhey everyone,.
i have been getting in on going debates with brothers in the congregation about the role of the governing body.
i feel that jehovah would not want us to blindly follow a particular g.b.

guys, even if honourstheisis has a political agenda or a right wing agenda or any other agenda and has never been a JW - we are up to arguing our own sides (whatever they may be) - aren't we? I think we are

honourstheisis, keep going. keep questioning. The scenario you describe is hypotheitcal as you clearly point out and I'm guessing that in your actual questioning of JWs you did not present you argument exactly as above. So taking it in that spirit, and even if you are a republican at heart, I do get the sense that you are not trying to win debates but just to get people thinking.
occupying a stance of resistance is a hugely dignified and ethical way of living. so best wishes to you.
However I would say that blind allegiance to authority is supported by scripture. The GB are being scriptural in this respect. But there are verses in the bible that can be used against the position of requiring blind allegiance to authority.
