  in a study that explores the close relationship between the social history of early christianity and the textual tradition of the emerging new testament, ehrman examines how early struggles between christian "heresy" and "orthodoxy" affected the transmission of the documents over which, in part, the debates were waged.

  his thesis is that proto-orthodox scribes of the second and third centuries occasionally altered their sacred texts for polemical reasons--for example, to oppose adoptionists like the ebionites, who claimed that christ was a man but not god, or docetists like marcion, who claimed that he was god but not a man, or gnostics like the ptolemaeans, who claimed that he was two beings, one divine and one human.

  I tend to agree with this statement

  The victors not only write the history, they also reproduce the texts.

  imo the texts that became stamped by the (later) church fathers' seal of ancestral authority came out of other texts and often against those (some by earlier church fathers) and therefore then quietened those texts whilst superimposing their own. I haven't read any of Ehrman's books but am quite interested in seeing what he has to say.

  For example - Origen was an unorthodox early church father. He came from the Alexandrian school of thought. Another was Clement. Is this the sort of thing Ehrman is writing about?

  i've read some random articles of late and have found a recurring factor which could well be answered effectively by many of the posters here.

  basically the notion relates to what makes one vulnerable to indoctrination into a high-control religious cult and goes lke this .

  while most, if not all humans seek group approval and association to some degree .

  My parents were fine too. Pretty average, doing the best they could for us. Poor parenting does not figure in the reason why I became a witness. I was asking questions though and Jehovahs witnesses supplied answers.

  so this weekend my wife had a major grand mal seizure for the first time in her life.

  she was rushed to the er.

  a few hours later while i was at her side she had another major one.. it was the scariest moment in my life.

  why did they include the idea that rutherford would only accept the mansion if it was deeded to the ancient worthies?

  the article clearly states the house was for rutherford so why add a crazy notion that its going to be turned over to the bible worthies upon their imminent return?

  it scream cult when they included this crazy notion of ancients beeing on the deed.. if wts followers didn't mind rutherford having a mansion when the country was entering an economic downturn why would they want to report the idea of the building being deeded to king david?

  diamondiiz - I think you have a point. Rutherford had money, power, motive and knowledge of the law to carry this through in the way you say.

  pull yourself together and take charge. Tell yourself enough is enough and that you are not taking the blame anymore. A skill worth cultivating is to know and be confident that even when others blame you, you are not at fault but that you will shoulder your responsibilites nevertheless. Do it for your children!

  Considering organizing an unbelieving spouse support group in my area. Any suggestions?

  i like coming to this board because i like the feeling of knowing that i am not alone in dealing with jehovah's witnesses and their mind control.

  however, i still feel largely alone because i cannot find any actual people in the area i live who is dealing with a situation similar to mine.. as most of you know, i am the unbelieving spouse of a jehovah's witness and i find it frustrating to know that holidays, birthdays, etc.

  are not held in as high regard by my wife as they are for me.

  tuesday night, i drove to a couple of older sister's homes, and dropped off their magazines, and kindom ministries.

  thursday night, i went to the meeting and cleaned and locked up the building.

  i also dropped someone off who earlier recieved a ride to the hall but their ride couldn't come back to take them home.

  tough situation you are in. Start saying NO now. Keep saying NO - it is your friend, your guardian angel. Paste the NO somewhere prominent in your home. Practice saying it in front of a mirror. If it sounds a little harsh and/or if an elderly sis is on the receiving end then practice saying

  I'm so sorry I cannot do this for you now - I hope you find someone else. Don't elaborate - just walk away
