I agree with Minimus. I did some extra research a few years ago and there are a lot of products that contain blood that the WT never mentioned... very miniscule amounts but blood nonetheless. I actually made myself crazy with the research I was doing.
I just remember hearing a talk about honesty and how even taking a paper clip from work would be stealing. And that it doesn't matter if we were to steal a penny or a milllion dollars... it's still stealing. And also 'the person faithful in what is least is also faithful in much'... so that all should apply to the blood thing too. I mean, if JWs are going to 'abstain from blood' then they better make sure they are REALLY abstaining from blood.

I was born in the 70's and I remember all the Witnesses would only buy Schneider's or Shopsy's brand wieners because they were Jewish. Maple Leaf was a big no-no because at that time those hot dogs contained 'by-products'. It was the same for pepperoni/salami... we would never, ever eat those unless we inquired first or read the ingredients. To this day I check the ingredients. The whole blood thing became pretty much a phobia for me. I'm surprised that so many other JWs have never heard of this phenomenon! (And like one of the posters mentioned above - I also called Pizza Hut and got the all-clear on their pepperoni!).
So if this is no longer a common practice or suggested by the organization, how exactly are JWs supposed to 'abstain from blood' in a dietary way? Just not eat blood sausage and avoid drinking goblets of blood or what? LOL!

Thank you to SaltyOldLady...
What a story. Thank you so much for taking the time to share that with me. I just sent it to my husband to read to. They were 'annointed' and the congregation still treated them like that? I can't believe it. And how did the brother get disfellowshipped if he didn't commit adultery? Did they say he 'committed adultery in his heart'?
Many thanks.

No, I really don't. I don't believe in policing my children. I have done my best to teach them right from wrong. I have fully warned them about the dangers of revealing any personal information online. I do have my young daughter's password for her email and Facebook, though I rarely check them. I have just asked them not to clear the history and that if I find that the history has been cleared then I will be asking questions.
My son has an iPod Touch and is given pretty much full liberty.
The kids go on lots of sites that could potentially expose them to some nudity or foul language, but that is part of the reality of the world that we live in. If they come across that sort of thing, they just move on. It's really not the end of the world.
I think when you make something taboo that's what really makes it enticing. I prefer to be more laid back about things and it seems like the kids are the same way. They both have consciences but they are not imposed by us. They have been allowed some freedom in determining what's helpful and harmful. I see them making a stand for what's right on a regular basis. (ie. I mentioned the game 'Red Dead Redemption' to my son. He told me that although he wants to play it he has decided it's too debased so he doesn't want that one. I was pretty proud of him seeing as he is only 14!)
Anyway, everyone has their way of raising their kids, but this is working for us so far.

A big thank you to all of you that have responded. I have read through your comments and I am reconsidering our plan. My kids are visiting for the next couple of days so I can't spend much time on the site. But I think I made some progress with my son who is 14.
I mentioned to him that I had read the recent WT encouraging children to get baptized. I told him that I have never felt that was the right thing to do and I cautioned him NOT to rush into it or allow himself to be pressured. I told him that we all got baptized very young and then ended up getting into trouble and having judicial committees. I told him to look at how hard things have been since I have been disfellowshipped... I told him it's really not something to take lightly and that he has to be 100% sure. Also, I reminded him that Jesus didn't get baptized 'til age 30. He didn't say a whole lot but I could tell he totally understood what I was saying and that made me feel pretty good.
Baby steps... right?

Yes, I've done it before. Not through Peapod but through Grocery Gateway. It was fantastic and I wish they had that service where I live now. Totally worth it!

To jgnat: You are very right that I live by feeling. I am trying to battle the tendency to allow my emotions to rule me... Sounds like I have a lot of battles ahead!
