Being in a cult - what good did it do?
by Garrett inso, here's a bit of a different point of view.
while most of us will agree that our time within the jw cult was rather terrible, however, i'd like to look at another aspect.
did anything good come out of being in a cult and then waking up from it?.

I used to think I would've turned out bad if I didn't know the "truth"...but that's what I was lead to believe as part of the indoctrination. Now that I am out I am asking myself how much more successful I could have been if not for the cult. I would have been more educated and possibly a professional or business man like some of my classmates. (one being a world class chess player and another a news anchor for a national network). I still did well without a formal education but I'll never know how much better I could have done.... -

For me absolutely nothing good came from being in a cult. Using one of the WT illustrations, do you need to lose a limb to realize how useful it was...be sick to appreciate good health or be immoral to appreciate virtue? Likewise being prisoner of a cult didn't increase the value of the freedom I should have enjoyed from the start. I do realize that I wasted the prime years of my life slaving for a printing company - a pain I shouldn't have to live with if I had lived a normal life.
Edit: Phizzy and I are on the same page!

Hi Everyone. Answer to prayer countdown...
by Stumpy ini've been lurking for about 3 months now and thought i'd better finally sign up.
you have all been an immense help to me as i have come to realize that this isn't the truth so i want to say a great big thank you!
what a crazy, emotional ride it is to finally face the truth about the doubts that i have carried for many years.

Welcome Stumpy.
6 years ago a close friend was diagnosed with cancer and obviously I prayed Jah on my friend's behalf. At the same time my long time employer was going to shut down the division I worked for and after almost 3 decades I would have to look for employment. I also prayed for guidance...well I guess it was much easier for the almighty god to find me a job than saving my friend...These events contributed in my awakening to the truth about "the truth". How could I ever thank Jah for blessing me with a materially comfortable life without realizing that millions of brothers live in poverty? What made me more worthy than them? Jah is either partial or he has absolutely nothing to do with the way we live. In fact for me he only existed in my mind and he has been flushed out.

Satan a Murderer?
by freemindfade inso took the wives car instead of mine in today, the watchtower was playing, i got to hear t.morris life story as narrated by him, but that is another story entirely... long story short, the study article it went into was about satan.
first of all the person reading sounded like the epitome of a brainwashed drone.
second this is why meeting and hearing these things make me more of an unbeliever than any exjw website.

Why didn't god kill Satan? The lame excuse that it's to prove that some humans would always worship him is BS. -

I'm with Pete. I was fooled once and it lasted 50 years. I no longer believe in anything that requires to have faith, including God and an afterlife. JWs, Christians and all other "bible-based" religions claim to follow the bible but they cannot agree on how to understand and apply what they read. In my new reality if you are given the same music sheet, you should all play the same tune...I no longer want to debate how each note should sound or how long it should last...bible debates never end. -

If I made 10 millions last year I would probably quit unless I really loved what I was doing. I would pursue other interests too...but not cult-related ones. He will be paraded at conventions to tell how much happier he is now and how bad being a football player was...bad association, immorality, materialism...violence, all things God hates. I saw the same thing when Tom Edur quit his NHL hockey career and he eventually was sent to serve where the need is great...he wasn't a star and didn't make 10 millions... -

WT terms of use for website material
by stuckinarut2 inso the society's website has the following terms of use.... how can they forbid people from quoting or posting content on any form of social media?
how too can "breaching" these self imposed terms be "punished"?
nearly every "good" witness sends the society stuff to each other via instagram, facebook, email, etc....so are they disobeying the directives of the governing body?.

They are the custodians of the truth and they want to make sure no one steal their potential customers...they love to brag that they're the ones who taught their members the truth...that they are the only ones to preach the good news...I remember a website posting the daily text was forced to shut down...if it doesn't come from mother may make you less dependant of her.

Assembly Assessment increased 300%
by James Jack inwhile at the assembly, when reading the financial statement, i noticed our expenses went from $2500 to almost $9500 so i questioned an elder and said that the assessment per publisher is at $10.50 for all in the us branch territory.. he added this helps the society know how much is coming in and helps them plan out future projects!.

The assembly halls should not be viewed as a cost efficent way to hold meetings. The assembly haĺls are rental properties with repeat customers who are obligated to attend, maintain and pay for their use. Can you say cash cow for the WT. -

At Peace, at Last
by compound complex ina cool sense of tranquility overtakes my troubled spirit.. i emerge slowly from a deeply entrenched, lifelong nightmare and proceed into gentle reverie, into quiet wakefulness.
youthful ideals, embodied in vaporous form before me, are a black reminiscence, threatening to return as an untold want having neither name nor substance, only a niggling dig that skewers my soul.
i shut it out, shut out all the noise in the head: irrational thought, excessive thinking that leads to depression, to insanity.

Once again you're words have moved me to tears...because you are expressing a range of feelings I have experienced since leaving the cult...the peacefulness of having escaped the circular life and the uncertainty about what comes next. Decades of indoctrination have left indelible marks...like an old tattoo you can't erase, but only hide...until you look at it again.
Merci cher ami Coco
