Candidly,
What the writer is trying to get across is life without God. That without God life is just that. What is interesting is when you get to Ch. 12.

i was reading ecclesiastes 1 -3 today(excerpt is from chapter 2)..... and i'm not a bible scholar and dont claim any wisdom... but these scriptures seem to just say you live and you die regardless of who or what you do in life.
its all vanity...... is this the true wisdom of the bible?
that we exsist not by or for any reason.. we just exsist then we die..... end of story?

Well, Yiz in my mind it's a totally laughable position.
Have you read any of Scott Klusendorf's articles on abortion?
Pretty powerful stuff. I have yet to see a pro-abortionist respond to his arguements.

just wondering what exactly americans (u.s.a) are taught about their country in school .do you really salute a flag, do you swear allegiance to the country.
are you taught that you fought for freedom, and that america is the land of the free, etc etc?
do you actually believe what you are taught?
If I said this once, then I've said it a thousand times: The U.S. IS NOT, I REPEAT NOT, a "free democracy". It is a democratic republic.
For a bunch of people that claim to be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo educated way can't you get that straight?????????????
The founding fathers distanced themselves from the Athenian democracy and leaned more toward Spartan oligarchy in forming the basis for the American governmental system.
For crying out loud, read the Constitution, The Federalist Papers, and The Anti-Federalist Papers. The latter two are the thought processes that gave birth to the American form of government.

Paxil,
I only thought the irrelevant hosts on Pacifica believed that mumbo-jumbo. I am proved wrong again.
Life goes on.

Flag salute: Yes.
Swear allegiance: Yes, and I also say the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-vil words "under God." Though I don't think those words should be included in the pledge.
That I "personally" fought for freedom: No, I didn't personally fight in any war. Though my grandfather fought in WW2 in Europe (in order for French persons to spit on Lance Armstrong)
That the U.S. is the "land of the free": Yes.
Do I actually believe this: Yes, Sleepy, I as an ignorant and uneducated American (per Michael Moore) and product of American public eductaion (which most persons of the political bent of Mr. Moore support) still believe these axioms.
Why do you ask? Are we not allowed to believe as we wish? Or should we meld into what the Euro has become? An amalgamtion of spineless jellyfish.

Edited to add: You know sleepy, the UK's history on dealing with ingenious people is not as good as you think it is.
Oh, I forgot, only the U.S. is ever guilty of anything, and perpetually holds that guilt.
do you think it is ever appropriate?
should it be illegal?
do you think the bible recommends doing this?
Spanking, when done correctly, is effective. The questions is what is "correctly"? In our house spanking was done by the parent that was the most emotionally distant from the offense. Spanking was done with a yardstick and on the rump. It was done after and only after an explanation of the offense was given to him/her. The amount of swats was one or two, but never more than two. Spanking was never done in public, only in the home.
Spanking was rare. Time-outs, grounding and restriction were the most used form of discipline in the home. I found these to be more effective. We also rewarded exceptionally good behavior. I find that too many people get hung up on disciplining poor behavior, rather than rewarding exceptionally good behavior. After all what motivates you at work? Spiffs, recognition, awards?

the wts is in damage control mode.
the september 1st wt shows how paranoid the wts has become.
the 1st study article talks about glorifying god "with one mouth".
The WTS is attempting to control more and more the R&F. They are frightened of the pedophile scandals, and what this will mean tothe financial empire they have amassed of the past 100-plus years.
More and more the look like Big Brother, and more and more the R&F will give up their right to disent.
