Liberal Equals Ex-JW
by patio34 insomething i've noticed on this board is that there seem to be many more liberal-left types than conservative-right types.
what do you think of my following theories?
in the 70s, many converts to jw-dom were influenced by the anti-establishment philosophy and anti-viet nam war.

Ignored one,
In order to be funny, humor must be based in reality. The facts are there for you to look up if you want to.
In 1993 two researchers (Barry A. Kosmin & Seymor P. Lachman) conducted a survey to discover religious trends within the United States (National Survey of Religious Identification). In this survey the gentleman surveyed 113,000 Americans. According to their survey, 30 religious groups were surveyed (900 Jehovah's Witnesses included). The survey showed that 67.6% of white JWs graduated from high school, as opposed to 80.9% of all the other religions. Of the religious groups the Jehovah's Witnesses ranked 30th with only 4.7% of the responding JWs identifying themselves as college graduates.
Based on this, I found Pork Chop's remark funny. I do commend those that have gone to further their education after they have left the Borg, as I have, and continue to do.
Don't take things so seriously, ignored one. Life is to short to be offended all the time.

Roy,
The main thing about J-Dubs is that the religion teaches conditional love. Their love for you is based on your standing as a J-Dub. One thing that I have learned from Christianity is unconditional love. It should be shown and just not talked about (my biggest gripe with most Evangelical Christians).
Show your family unconditional love, and the difference from their beliefs and yours.
My prayers are with you friend.

Bomb found on French rail line
by Gerard in.
http://www.cnn.com/2004/world/europe/03/24/france.railbomb/index.html
i wonder how the french will enjoy going alone after terrorists...

It's a good thing they found that. I would hate to see the the French government kissing our asses again. For the third time since WW 1.
Wonders how the French army would fight a war on terror? Their track record hasn't been very good in the last two wars on their turf.

when you go out to eat or for a walk do active jw's shout insults or attack
by topanga inthis is a regular thing now, whenever i go into an upscale restaurant a bunch of jw's start shouting insults and bring up things about my past.. recently i went in to a restaurant i've been dying to try on 14th street and someone on the restaurant staff was telling the other staff members all of my business from the brroklyn heights congregation.. he obviously thought i would give a damn about anything they said.
i just relaxed and ignored them.. when i got up to use the ladies room a bunch of the sisters followed me in fortunately the bathroom was way too small for even two people.
they are some sorry souls, i guess it was like i thought we killed her whats she doing in here?

They know better than to do that to me. I am not hesitant about getting in their faces.
The wife of an elder at the Cong. I attended here in Los Angeles is a checker at a nearby supermarket. When I do shop at the market I always get in her line, no matter how long the line is. I do this to make sure she sees how happy I am no that I am free, and a little sadist satisfaction of my own. I love whatching her squirm as she puts on the pleasant employee act.

Protesting the War in Afghanistan
by roybatty injust wondering about something.
i?ve been reading articles about the 9/11 panel and their investigation of the events leading up to that tragic event.
in hindsight, something should have been done and we could argue all day long if it?s clinton?s fault or if bush should have done something.

But then it goes back to prevention being better than cure.
How about if the CIA had not setup and funded Al Quida and Osama Bin Laden?
Face it ... you created the problem. Doesn't seem like such a brilliant idea now though does it?
The **real** solution is not to create the mess in the first place. People who objected to the war would also have objected to the things that caused the reasons for the war, ie. arms trade, exporting terror around the world, underminding foreign governments etc ...
The real solution is that the Soviets shouldn't have invaded Afghanistan in the first place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I agree with roybatty, the protests from the left were conspicuously absent.

Let me speak from personal experience. In the congregation that I grew-up in in northern New Mexico (this was also the early 70's) we had a great infusion of the "counter-cultural" types. There was a large hippie commune that produced four families that became JWs. Why I don't know the specific reasons why they became witnesses, I believe that the communal element (sharing, brotherhood, etc.) of the "Paradise" was something that they spoke about with my father (my father being the PO & WT study conductor in that cong.). IMO, I believe the real reason was a chance for these people to drop out of establishment by belonging to a fringe religion, yet still take on some cultural norms (home, business, family, etc.) All four of these families developed very succesful business (floor finishing, construction, recreation park, and the obligitory janitorial service).
What is interesting, is that of those four families, none of their children are in the "truth", and the ones that I consider close friends hold "conservative" political values. Many of them feel that the idealism of their parents caused them to join. They (the children) believe that the "flower child" idealism of their parents had turned out to by an empty journey. They lost that idealism, and were searching for something else. However, having rejected "cultural Christianity" they wouldn't open themselves to the claims of Christianity.
Just my musings. I would love to continue this thread.
