The DaVinci Code
by poppers inanyone read this book?
what's you're reaction, if any, to the basic premis of the book (that the holy grail is ... oops - i don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read it yet).
the author takes a ficticious incident and weaves some little-known yet interesting and provacative facts throughout his story.

The day a brother died in my Hall, & the unbelievable events that followed.

i was so brainwashed at the time i found a way to justify it.
i think i?ve been repressing my anger about this and now i need to vent.

I had heard stories similar to this growing up, but I thought they were urban legend.
Guess I was wrong.

Were You Ever Hauled Into The Library By The Elders...
by exjdub infor something really stupid, or for something you didn't do?.

In a comittee meeting for smoking weed (I was about 17 or 18), I was asked if I ever said to Sister Newly-Divorcednever DF'd Pioneer (and 10 years my senior), "Why don't we spend the night at the Sagebrush Inn (a local high-end resort in my old hometown), and then have breakfast?" My mouth dropped open wide, and I was absolutely speechless (which is a mighty difficult task). I couldn't believe that I had heard what I heard.
I told them that was absolutely a bald-faced lie. Now she was not in the library to make this charge. Secondly, I was working a part-time job as in the restaurant business. So the fact of staying at this resort would have been beyond my meager means. Thirdly, though Sister Newly-Divorced was attractive, she was too old for my taste at that time. And fourthly, that I really didn't even like to be around her, because she was a bit too snobby for my taste. So I told the three bozos, that this was a lie through and through. To which the JC chairman, said, but did you ever ask her that? I looked at the chief bozo, and said, absolutely deadpan, "Did the drugs you took in Haght-Ashbury affect your hearing?"
This didn't go over very well, needless to say. However, one of the other elders leaned over to the JC chair, and said I don't think we need to go into this further.
To make a long story short. I soke with my dad (PO in the Cong.) and asked him to start JC proceedings against Sister Newly-Divorced for slander. However, my dad refused, saying that it wouldn't look good, on the grounds that I had just been Publiclly Reproved.
Now many of you have spoken about a double standard for elders' kids. Well this elder's kid never got a break (3 JCs with 2 Public Reproofs) and when I was slandered had to sit back and take it.
And Sister Newly-Divorced always looked at me with a smug smile that I wanted to slap off her face.

To all who participate on this board: CONGRATULATIONS!!!
by cruzanheart intoday i called someone i've known for many, many years, since i was about 5 years old (dim will know who -- josephine), to see how she was doing.
when i was little i was in awe of her and thought she was the most fashionable person i knew.
her parents were old school witnesses who thought nothing of taking the train to new york to argue a point of doctrine with freddie and nathan.

Your conversation, cruzan, sounds remarkably similar to the one I had with my dad about a year ago after his heart attack. He asked how I was doing (I instinctively knew he was referring to) I told him that I really didn't want to talk about that. Howeverm I made statements in the same empty tone as your friend did.
My dad has been in the WTS since he 16 (he's in his 70s now), and been an elder since he was in his 20s. It just seemed to me that maybe he was realizing that all his life has been wasted on this lie that was foisted on him by the WTS. Not wanting to upset him, I just let it pass, and said I know. If I had known, I told him, that I would have made different choices. I told him that we must move on to better things.
I haven't talked to him since, though I am planning on calling him this weekend. Kind of a non-Father's Day, Father's Day call. I think I willl broach the subject this time, though carefully about things going
I have also had the same conversations with another old friend of mine that's still active (a long-time JW), but will talk to me on occasion. There was a definite tinge of hopelessness in his voice.
Is the end near? For the R&F and the Borg, not "this old system of things."

What other religions background do you have?
by Pinned Blouse ini was wondering what if any other religious background any of you had other than being a jw and if you have any comparisons.
i was brought up as a 7th day adventist.
once i was on my own as an adult, my former sis-in-law started studying with me and the rest was history.

I was raised a J-Dub. Any religious afiliation came after I left.
I attended a Pentecostal church (became a lay minister, too) that focused on inner-city persons (ie. drug addicts, gang members, etc.).
I later attended a large non-demoninational church (Calvary Chapel).
Have worked extensively , and sat directly under the teachings of Dr. Robert Morey.
Based on this and other factors you could call me a Reformed/Calvinist/Baptist/Pentecostal Christian.

John Hick
by logansrun inhas anyone ever had opportunity to study the writings and ideas of christian theologian john hick?
i've been reading one of his books entitled "god has many names" which is a radical and thought-provoking work advocating the idea that all of the world's great religions (christianity, judaism, islam, hinduism, buddhism) are in some way "inspired" by god and lead to him/her/it (hick refers to this entity as the "eternal one").
hick was raised in a non-religious enviornment, was initially inclined towards theosophy but later became a conservative christian in the presbyterian church.

Logan, there are two major Presbyterian branches in the U.S. the PCA and the PCUSA. PCA is the conservative branch (broke of from PCUSA in the early to mid 1930s). PCUSA is the liberal branch (eg. they allow female pastors).
Saying that someone is a conservative christian because he belongs to the Presbyterian church is a tad misleading.
Tell me which one of these two branches John Hicks belongs to and then I can call him conservative or liberal.

What did you actually enjoy about JW meetings?
by Pinned Blouse in.
as much as i dreaded going to all the meetings there were things that i did enjoy.. 1. no special parking spaces for the elders, etc.. 2. no collections plate going around the room.
3. no one person giving the talk every single week (can you imagine the same speaker 3 to 4 times a week, every day?

Mic running (kept me awake during the mindless monotony)
Sound board (I could do homework, and look like I was taking notes...such a good J-Dub boy).
The last song, knowing that lunch at Michael's Kitchen (Sundays) or McDonalds (Thursdays).
