we had a wonderful and most exemplary family in our congregation.
they are hard workers, hospitable, caring, generous, suffer with you through hardship, kind, compassionate, and as loyal to the organization as any family could be.
the father (an elder)wanted to do things right (by the org that is).
What was this guy thinking? How many parents involve the law when their child steals. They deal with the problem themselves.
.... And JW's parents wonder why more and more of their children are leading double lives. If you can't trust your own parents when you're a child who can you trust.

I think the beginning of the end for me started with being made an elder. I was shocked that the great org was run by dumb, bickering and corrupt elders and I had joined them. I resigned about 3 years later after a bitter disagreement about covering up of wrong doing.
It's a pity that more don't think and act like you.

I enjoyed your comments. They reaffirm just how manipulative this org is
Thus, the JW rank & file gets the impression from JW Central that no problems ever occur, and that elders are indeed directly and specially and individually "appointed by holy spirit".
They may get the impression, but most do not believe "that no problems ever occur". I know when I was a witness for years I didn't believe they were appointed by spirit.
And can I go so far as to say 'most'? congregations have so many problems with their elders that the "rank & file" know that all is not as it appears where the elders are concerned. The thinking ones have their doubts.
However, experience shows that good, positive, effective actions can be taken that will force militant elders into inactivity.
Unfortunately this can take years. What was it that my mum always says? "Wait on Jehovah, he'll fix it in his own time". Well they are all going to be waiting a hell of a long time.

Amazings Justice points brings me to this point. Elders truly believe that they are appointed by Gods Spirit. So when they appoint someone who is:
1. Their buddy, or
2. Who is wealthy (these 2 happen alot in the places I've been), or
3. Who is hiding a wrong doing themselves
How do they justify their appointment? Any of you who are ex elders, did you really believe you were appointed by holy spirit?
I'm very interested in comments and what you really did believe.
Anyone is free to comment not just exelders.

Amazing,
please do not take what I am about to say personally. (you are probably saying how can I not ) I am glad you are no longer part of such an organisation.
You say,
To openly shame a child for a minor offense, removing from them something they worked hard for, and making them feel unworthy of God by virtue of congregational action that is meted out within the Watch Tower system, can bring lasting emotional damage.
I'm glad you finally figured it out.
Elders in my humble opinion, have no qualifications to deal with other peoples problems, especially childrens. They (from my experience) cause more harm then good.
I have met very few elders in my time that have much decency in them at all. If they had some to start with it soon disappeared in several different ways
1. They lost their decency
2. They were railroaded into the other elders way of thinking.
3. They quit being elders.
None of this would likely have developed IF we had left this situation alone [And IF I could have let myself not feel the need to check with another Elder.].
And so it is with most elders, unless it suits them.
Then IF the greater sin committed later on had taken place,
The child from what you said was repentant. If the matter had not been pushed its more than likely it would have been warning enough for him and no greater sin ever committed. (just my opinion)
the judicial system of JWs is lacking balance, reason, and with untrained and unqualified men implementing Watch Tower standards,
My point exactly.
Keep the congregation clean at ALL costs. It doesn't matter if you wreck havoc on other peoples lives, just keep the congregation clean!!

you say,
I think that maybe you are being hard on yourself.
What about the poor individuals at the other end of the elders 'stick' the lives of whom will never be the same.
I've been wanting to vent my spleen for a long time about elders and this post got me going. So I've said my piece and now I'll quit.
If anybody slams me for this, I'm calling my hubby

a sin worse than apostasy .
there was a very nice young couple in our congregation with one child.
no one could see why she should not be reinstated.
Amazing,
Whenever I read things like this it brings all the disgust I have for this org. back up.
Then I feel sorry that my family are still slaves to such a destructive org.
As I grew up in the org, I like most here saw (I wrote 'some', but thats not true) many wicked things done, especially to those that are more of a meek nature.
I remember there was an elderly sister in our congregation who was disfellowshipped for years. She would come to every meeting, and looked at peace. Maybe she felt a closeness to Jehovah, and was happy serving him, even under her present situation, I don't know ... but thats what it looked like. I left that cong. so I have no idea whether she was every reinstated.
Whilst reading your post I realised how happy I am that my immediate family is truly free of such an org and that my children will grow up with free thinking. I never realised how free. Thanks for 'hitting' that 'home' to me.

i was just looking out the window, as it would happen a middle aged woman, or perhaps a young woman worn out with her life walked past.
she stopped on the edge of the mall where my wifes office is, and sat on a bench outside the window.
on close look, she couldnt have been more than late 30's, but probably only 35.. she sat for a while just looking at the ground in front of her, her face just exhibiting that blank look of the world weary.

I felt like crying for you when I read your post, just as I cried for myself when Dave asked me a question that set the whole ball in motion for us. I was like several people in one trying to come to terms with it for several days, then we sat down and did some very extensive indepth study for the next 2 days to make sure we were really on the right track.
I cried for this loss today. I cried for the disappointment of all of us, for the change in direction that has to be made in order to keep going. Some, in their enlightenment, have concluded in their heart that their is no God and that the Bible is a book of stories, some have found a new path to god through being born again.....
It is a loss in one sense, everything you've known, believed, your whole life revolved around, is crumbling before you. Its hard for you too because you were cut off, rather than you cutting yourself off. But you know what, it does get better. I too at times longed for the good old days. Even when I was still in the org, and things began changing I longed for the good old days. I grew up in the org, was in it for 35 years. Its all I ever knew. It was the "truth" and I knew it. Except all of a sudden, we realise we've been living a lie. And its hard to accept.
It is as Seeker says
I never had everlasting life to begin with, I only thought I had.
No its not so much the thought of dying its as you say
everything that I had has been taken away.
You say
Yes to you all, it might seem petty..I doubt there's any sensible person here who would think this. Most would feel deeply for your loss, the same as they felt deeply for their own loss.
I find that by getting on the net, reading books, talking to people, reading what other posters beliefs are helps me in my journey to finding what life really is all about.
What is really our future and I do believe (my personal belief) that there is much more in store for us than our simple JW's beliefs. Much more in store for us than most people can ever imagine.
Well here I go rambling again. Posting more insight to myself than I would normally do. But hey if its of any encouragement to you at all, it was worth it.

Thinking of you
PS Bugeye was going to post a reply, but he says I've said it all.
if you read the 97 watchtower cited below you are given the impression that a child molester who is known(that is confessed) would never have privileges in the congregation arrangement.
is that really the case?
in a conversation with the service department it was plainly stated to me personally that a child molester could re-qualify again after a long period of time had passed.
Somebody
I totally agree with you
It's pretty damn sick when a cigarette smoker gets treated worse than a child molester. And a child molestergets treated better than his/her victim.
I can't see that they will ever realise that they are no better than the religions they condemn.
