OK, here is the story. I selected a man to perform the wedding ceremony. He was bright and articulate. Before the wedding, my wife was in the basement of the Kingdom Hall, getting prepared for the wedding. Well, the brother who was about to give the wedding ceremony, asked me to go downstairs, so he could have a chat with me and my soon to be wife.
Well, I agreed, and we went down stairs. His purpose was to ask us if we had had sex before our wedding. We were shocked. Now, let us supose that we had. What would he do? Cancel the wedding. The Kingdom Hall was full with friends, relatives and of course a lot of JWs. Was he going to cancel the wedding in front of all those people????
That is a day I will never forget. I am ashamed as to how we were treated.

Then and now - dating practices
by larc ini was in high school from 1954 to 1958. we did not have junior high at that time.
we had grades, 1 though 8, and high school 9 though 12. .
at any rate, we were encouraged to shop around and date several people, just like the rest of society.

Oh, my Gawd, you kissed? What a horrable crime. Not only did my wife kiss, but we engaged in heavy petting. We did not do the horizontal bop. We were both virgins when we married, althogh we were questioned about this before our wedding. That is a story for another day.

At any rate, we were encouraged to shop around and date several people, just like the rest of society. We were NOT told to date someone with marriage on our mind.
We also had parties. Usually, there no adults in attendance. We danced to rock and roll and we slow danced, right close. There was no drinking or drugs involved, just a good time was had by all.
I remember back in the late 60's or early 70's when they changed the rules. I thought that was a disaster. -

Brother Blue,
No, I did not spend time in prison. I was deferred as a minister. That is how active I was. When I faded away, I was deferred as a college student.
In the mean time, I visited a friend of mine in an honor farm in West, by God, Virginia. His life was pretty good considering the circumstances. He told me that he was told that he could make a lot of money bringing moon shine from WVA to Ohio. He did not do that, although it was tempting. -

I am 64 years old and was raised as JW. Live as young JW was very different than it is today. In the 1940's my mother's cousin spent three years of a five year term in prison. By the 60's jail time was reduced to one year. We all expected to spend time in prison. Today, JWs can do alternate service - quite a change indeed.
My sister's husband lucked out. The judge sentenced him to work at a hospital. You couldn't ask for it, but if the judge gave you that sentence, you could accept it. -

How many Witnesses will there be in 20 years?
by dothemath inwe've often had the scripture "the little one will become a thousand, small one a mighty nation" applied to the modern-day organization...........often represented as an amazing fulfillment of bible prophecy.. actually anything with a growth rate will increase exponentially in time.
(it's easy to figure out with natural logarithms).
looking back at some previous years, there was some exceptional growth, resulting in large increases every ten years or less.

A simple rule is the rule of 72. Take a growth rate and divide into 72. For example, a 7 per cent increase would take ten years to double, 72/7. My opinion is that the JWs will not grow 20 years from now. They will be on the decline.

Do you ever DEFEND Witnesses?
by GetBusyLiving ini know i come on here a lot and laugh at the crazy stuff i used to believe.. it's a terrific place to vent my frustration at the org.
and share experiences with people who understand.
but i find that when some people trash talk witnesses who were never part of it i end up sort of defending them usually.

I niether defend them nor attack them. If someone discusses them and they are wrong, I try to set the record straight. I remember one woman who said the the JWs do not believe in Jesus Christ, a very out ragious statement. I told her that they did, but not in the same way as most other Christians.

What I remember from 1975
by Big Dog insince i am sort of late to the party this has probably been beaten to death and if it has just kick this thread to the curb.
i was 11 years old in 1975 and i remember being scared silly the whole year.
i mean there was so much hype about it and the tension in the air was so thick it was unreal.

This subject makes me very sad. For those of us who lived through it, we remember it very clearly. Yet, the JWs who lived through it, act as if it never happened. I had a conversation with my JW sister two weeks ago. I will probably be our last. I brought up 1975, and she said it was no big deal. I told her I could supply some WT quotes, but she was not interested. I brought up other subjects, and I went too far. After an hour of a long distance phone call I made to her, she yelled at me and hung up. I may never talk to her again, and I really don't care. I have disfellowshiped her.

The religion was started it Pittsburgh. I grew up in Akron, Ohio, about a two hour drive from the religion's origin. I think that the religion was strict in this geopgraphical location.

Craig, thank you very much for your very kind compliment. It meant a lot to me. After I read it, I went into the living room and asked my wife to come read it as well. She thought it was very nice indeed. Well, you left me no alternative. I have to come up with other things to say.
