hubby and i happened to catch an episode of "nova" last night.
fascinating stuff.
Science by definition is a process . . . normally, the result of scientific process goes through scrutiny, criticism, concensus and finally accetptance . . . even at that point many scientist continue with further investigation to deepen understanding.
The origins of the world based on a religious or biblical viewpoint is just men peering at words and deciding what they mean . . . the arguments over that never change . . . or stop.
It's comparing apples and oranges.
towards the end of my untheocratic worship i would make sure no one was looking and i would x out peoples names on the school schedule writing canceled or i would draw arrows from one persons talk to anothers as if they had switched talks because of going out of town or something..
I think I've told this story before but it's worth another round.
We had a particularly obnoxious PO at one time who was an awful speaker . . . very dull and condescending. Anyway, the Congo was saving for a new hall and he was giving a progress report during a 'special needs' part . . . he set about berating the Congo for not supporting the fund and at one point said . . .

Immediately a voice from the rear of the hall said quietly but nevertheless audible to all "Well why didn't ya then". Suppressed giggles followed not to mention an intense inquiry that lasted about two weeks . . . but he was never exposed. When asked if i knew who it was . . . I lied. I took him out and shouted him a beer (and dinner) instead.
i wanted my jw friend's perspective on something, so i asked them this question:.
if i read a passage of scripture and conclude about it something that opposes the wt's view of the same passage, in your mind who has the truth about that passage (i.e.
who is correct)?

i've been visiting this forum for quite awhile now, reading as much as i can about others in situations similar to mine.
i've learned alot but i think i am ready to share and will really appreciate whatever advice/thoughts anyone has to offer.. i'm a "wordly" gal (non-demoninational christian) and have been dating a jw for a year.
he has been a witness for about 34 yrs but has been inactive the past two due to the way he and his ex were treated when she was df'd for cheating/alcoholism.

You decide . . . JW's are experts at giving advice . . . so are many others . . . and it's not always good either way.
Your situation is difficult and without knowing more it's hard to advise with conviction . . . however, if your loved one is undecided then I wouldn't push Crisis of Conscience under his nose . . . read it yourself . . . and then just leave it lying around . . . somewhere obvious, and see if 'nature takes it's course" . . . like you, he will have to make his own decision.

Correct me if I'm wrong . . . but the basis of your question is that if God is omniscient (all knowing) and omnipotent (all powerful) then the ultimate responsibility for evil . . . is God . . . ?
Outside of the 'excuses' I believe this conclusion is inescapably correct.
Considering also, that the JW's would have us believe that the God of the Bible is poised to massacre 99.9% (7.2 billion) of the human race in order to 'rid the world of evil', . . . and yet free will (the potential for evil) remains, . . . this presents a disturbing view of someone who has the potential to avoid it . . . to the critical thinker anyway.

It's a funny thing . . . we've had about 6000 earthquakes in the last 7 months over that magnitude . . . about 5 per day 3.0 or more still at the moment . . . they have to be 3.5 - 4.0 before we even notice them these days . . . although we all got woken by a 4.0 at about 4.00am this morning which knocked a few small items over (again) . . . but here's the thing . . . the JW's here are strangely quiet about bible prophecy and earthquakes.
I had a bloke (JW) call on me about three weeks ago . . . we talked for half an hour about natural disasters, earthquakes, volcanoes etc., and not once did he mention the bible, show me any literature, or even mention anything remotely religious! . . . in fact, it was quite an interesting chat . . . then he simply left.
It set me to wondering . . . everyone here is now extremely well educated about earthquakes . . . what causes them, worldwide frequency etc. Added to that, people are grappling with REAL problems coping with the aftermath . . . not likey to entertain a bullshit artist for very long at all . . . a couple of friends have said similar things. My personal take is their bible warning on earthquakes is definitely not popular and for that reason they are tending to leave the subject alone. The 'warning work' is strangely muted.

I don't think this guy needs to win his case necessarily . . . in fact the 'eccentric' nature of his approach might attract more attention.
But if he simply draws enough attention, then someone in higher places will feel obliged to investigate . . . I'm picking the Victorian State Child Safety Commissioners Office could be a good place to be encouraged. (if things are not too different over the ditch).

Good eg. TotallyADD . . . when you leave out the smoke and mirrors of religion . . . the facts paint quite a different picture . . . benign of anything supernatural or divine . . . unless you add a modified or distorted perception of it.
people become jws for a variety of reasons.
i just read an interesting passage in a novel that i think applies to many of us to some way.
the main character in the book is a retired military policeman.
Agreed . . . there is a thread around somwhere regarding the absence of parenting factors . . . and how they slow down the development into adulthood. The need for 'family' and the structure of being 'parented' lingers into the mid twenties . . . vulnerabilty skyrockets!
I see some evidence of this in my own case.
