...laissez-faire capitalistic. Seperating economics from governing... you can have a communist democracy too. But somewhere along the way communism got associated with dictatorships.

I want to see I, Robot this week maybe. For some *strange* reason, I seem to be drawn to apocalyptic type movies.

I am gearing up for grassroots activities to raise awareness and register voters in PA and MD. My main issues: economic (e.g. workers, deficit, etc), "closed" government policies and national security. My GF is assisting me. Her brother is also joining the Kerry campaign.

How Many of You Fine FOlks Would Agree With The Following...

I would add these:
Repubs (conserve) issues:
* individual responsibility
* less government involvement with lower taxes
* pro-big business and wealth creation
* pro-liberties, but limit social freedom
* pro-religion
Dems (progress) issues:
* individual opportunity
* larger government involvement and more services
* pro-worker, consumer and wealth distribution
* pro-social rights, but limit "dangerous" liberties
* pro-secularism
This is just a generalization. Any more?

One Soldier's Viewpoint of Iraq
by ThiChi inone soldier?s viewpoint of iraq.
greetings (names withheld).
as i head off to baghdad for the final weeks of my stay in iraq, i wanted to say thanks to all of you who did not believe the media.

PS - You should be ashamed and you owe this soldier an apology (IMHO)
Shame on you Simon for pointing out bias.
There are good and bad things going on in Iraq. I agree the media could do a better job of showing the good side. Perhaps its been harder to do since the cause of the war changed...

Changd My Mind About the War In Iraq
by roybatty ini don't want one more u.s. soldier to die for the iraqi people.
it's now obvious to me that the international community was right.
the people of iraq do not deserve to live in a free society.

So, explain "international cooperation." Explain who we achieve a stable and representative government in an area/culture that consistently demonstrates itself to be murderous, oppressive, culturally breeding terrorism, who truly don't understand the concept of freedom.
blacksheep, I wish I knew exactly the best way to promote those values. I do know America should champion human rights -- religious, women, representation, etc. -- which automatically raises living conditions. America could use its immense clout to pressure positive changes in China, Middle East, Africa. It's going to be harder now though in the Middle East until Israel/Palestine is resolved. I also find it objectionable that our country could have a key role in making an international war crimes court, but then unsign our signature. If this court existed in the past, it could have brought international justice on murderers like Saddam and his buddies. This is one real example of something America can do. There are plenty of others things besides war.

Great News, Employment Up
by Yerusalyim inthat lagging indicator of employment is silencing the "jobless recovery" critics, in the last two months (march and april) 600,000+ new jobs created, and the january and febraury figures are up.

Well they had to pick up sometime, Yeru!
One can't really blame Bush for the economic downturn -- economic cycles are bound to happen. What I dislike about the President's economic solution (i.e. tax-cuts, tax-cuts, plus a few tax cuts) was that it was very off-balance. Many say it favored the wealthy immensely, tilted heavily toward corporations rather than worker aid, and was just plain slow (tax cuts do take a few years to work through the system, especially phased ones).
In my opinion corporate tax cuts targeted at job creation, plus public works projects would have been a better use of the surplus. That would create jobs immediately and cushion the blow to workers.

I don't think we should delude ourselves: terrorists will strike in America again. And smashing them with a sledge hammer might work for awhile -- but unless a broader strategy of (1) international cooperation, (2) stable and representative governments and (3) raising of living conditions is pursued, we will be working against a growing tide.
I also don't think we should abandon the Iraqis to a bloody civil war at this point. We (or rather our President) committed to finishing the job when we went to war. What we need now is international support.
The first step to Mid-East stability should have been Israel/Palestine though. In my opinion Iraq was somewhat unstable, but contained. I'm all for pursuing changes in oppressive governments but starting unilateral wars to do it happens to be a great way to build up a terrorist base.
